Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2010-09-13/WikiProject report - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This week we met up with five wikigraphists—members of of the Wikipedia Graphics Lab. We chatted with JovianEye, Begoon, Fallschirmjäger, Gringer and Orionist.

Unlike a conventional WikiProject, the Lab does not work with articles – only images, grouped into three "workshops": one for illustrations, one for photographs and one for maps. When the project started in 2006, requests were all grouped in one area, as the Graphics lab. Since then, the three separate workshops have been created, focusing people with relevant skills on the specific area they can work on rather than having to look through all requests. However, this sometimes means keeping watch on three different pages, each with a lower level of activity, as well as the sister project on Wikimedia Commons.

kind of amused that it was taken at face value. that's what you get for practicing satire among non-native speakers. because it WAS a satire, right? obvs.

[Foundation-l] encouraging women's participation
A thread from mid June. Long thread that devolves into "how can we make Wikipedia a social networking site" about half way through. so many words!

Talking GLAMs, the British Museum and low hanging fruit with Wikimedia's Liam Wyatt | Culture24
Q. If you could change one thing about the GLAM sector what would it be?
A. I would say to not treat digital visitors with a different level of rights than in-person visitors. Yes, it is more difficult to measure engagement online but sometimes digital-visitors to GLAM institutions are treated at best as a burden and at worst as art thieves.

For sure, nothing can or should replace the *actual experience* of visiting a museum - but the reach of a museum can be so much greater online and the impact can be much broader with unexpected benefits. Moreover, the internet is a great leveller - even the biggest physical institution only has access to the same software and platform as the smallest. It's not a matter of what you've got but what you do with it!

Wikimedia blog » Blog Archive » Danese Cooper, our new CTO
This is the second woman hired by WMF to their main technical team in just months. And CTO - that's no token woman. :) In December they hired Priyanka Dhanda as a "Code Maintenance Engineer" http://article.gmane.org/gmane.science.linguistics.wikipedia.technical/46504/ . They have another leading technical woman in Naoko Komura, on the Usability Project. http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/User:Shuhari

Panel on Wikimedia chapters
Although chapters have existed since 2004 when Wikimedia Deutschland was founded, and there are now over 20 with many more fledging groups nearing official approval, many people know little about what chapters are and what they do. This panel will explore questions relating to the development and functioning of chapters. Why would you want to start a chapter? What types of things do they typically do? What is the relationship between a chapter and editing communities like? What forms may a chapter take? What are common difficulties faced by would-be chapters and young chapters?

WikiExpedition 2009

Between July 10tth and 20th, well, actually 21st, in the territory of Polish Podlaskie voivideship a group of Wikimedians (Wikipedians being a majority part of the group) photographed whatever there was to be photographed in the area, as well as collected materials related to the places and sights of the region, while all the time contacting the local people, bringing them news of Wikipedia and Wikimedia in general. The expedition was sponsored by Wikimedia Polska Association.
