Telstar Logistics took a lot of pictures during our trip to New York last week, but there's something about this shot that makes us keep coming back to it.
Perhaps it's the way the photo makes the New York Police Department look like just another theme-park element in the contemporary Times Square theme-park cityscape? Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it's definitely like no other place on earth.

Electronic Music and Films from the Middle Eastern Avant-Garde (1959-2001) In collaboration with Bidoun Magazine, UbuWeb is pleased to bring you the first installment of a trove of rarely heard and seen Middle Eastern culture. We begin by featuring six historic electronic musicians and sound poets: Dariush Dolat-Shahi Electronic music, Tar and Setar (1985) and Otashgah (1986) ; Halim El-Dabh Leiyla Visitations (1959) ; Forough Farrokhzad Radio Tehran Sessions (1962-1964) ; Ali Reza Mashayekhi Electronic Music (1970-2001) ; Bijan Mofid Shahreh Ghesseh (1967); and Ilhan Mimaroglu Electronic Music (1964-1983). We are also pleased to present three films: Forough Farrokhzad's The House is Black / Khaneh Siyah Ast (1962); Albert Lamorisse's Baadeh Sabah / The Lovers' Wind / Vent Des Amoureux (1970/1978); and Ali Akbar Sadeghi's Malek Khorshid (1975). Advertised as "World's Greatest Collection of Strange & Secret Photographs" and marketed mainly to overheated adolescents (see the 1942 Keen ad, left), it consists of nothing but photos and captions with no further exposition. This was not a book published to educate (despite appearing on some public library's shelves), but to titillate (literally)— it's emphasis was on the female form ("Female Beauty Round the World") and fashion, and it featured as many National-Geographic-style native breasts as possible. But anything lurid, weird, or just plain unusual is fair game. This was a book to gawk at by flashlight under the bedcovers.
