Pasta la Vista, Baby!
I inherited this pasta machine from a neighbor this week. Judging from the instructional booklet – I believe it dates back to the Truman administration. I always wanted a pasta machine, but a lack of storage space in my kitchen prevented me from purchasing one. So when this little gem dropped in my lap, I suddenly had dreams of hand cut fettuccine and glistening pans of meaty lasagna!

Evolution of a Web Developer: From PHP Newbie To Python Ninja
Some of you may have come out of the womb hacking shell scripts to disable that Internet-enabled baby video surveilliance monitor that your parents used to watch what you're doing on their iPad in the kitchen (visualize eTrade baby hacking away on a terminal app on his Android phone). But, I suspect most of us started more modestly than that and moved up the learning curve (some faster than others). The following is a somewhat fictional, somewhat true recollection.

Email Delivery For IT Professionals
So you’ve been asked to put together an email marketing blaster cannon thing. Maybe your CEO is trying to save some bucks. Maybe the marketing team is trying to get better tracking (to ask the CEO for more money). Or maybe you’re a big nerd and like setting up servers. Whatever the case, you’re the poor guy or girl who has to figure out how to get the email marketing machine built. My name is Brandon, and I’m the deliverability engineer at MailChimp. We send a few hundred million emails a month, and I’m here to help you understand how to set up your deliverability infrastructure (or you could just sign up free for MailChimp, and we’ll send out your email for you). Either way, if you’re an IT person in charge of deliverability for email marketing, then you’ve come to the right place.

People are taking the piss out of you everyday....
People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.

A Year of Links
Wait. I lied. I didn’t make eight books. I made n books. Or rather: I wrote a piece of software to ingest an XML file of all my Pinboard links (easily available from the Pinboard API by anyone – you just need to know your username and password). That software then generates a web page for each book, which is passed into the incredible PrinceXML to create a book. Prince handles all the indexing, page numbering, contents-creation, and header-creation. It’s a remarkable piece of software, given the quality of its output – with nothing more than some extended CSS, you end up with control over page-breaks, widows and orphans, and much more.

Nootropics: their effects, their risks, and where to get them
Sport drinks, dietary supplements and amino acids are safe and acceptable chemicals used by athletes and fitness enthusiasts every day with no ill effects or moral hazard. They improve health and physique, if simply because humans are animals of a chemical origin with chemistry at the heart of our basic functions. In the above I've covered everything that I've personally used myself, and all but cigarettes and Desmo should be considered on the same level as what you'll find in a GNC or Vitamin World store on any street in America.

Some substances that are otherwise safe are banned in sports competition because they confer an unfair advantage. Modafinil happens to be one of them because it can improve endurance. In competition we certainly should ban these substances if the point is to discover the natural excellence of man. But nootropics are different. If you are dying of a disease and the cure was invented by a surgeon under the influence of any of the above substances, then it would be quite absurd to bring up fairness of competition. Life isn't a competition, and it isn't a zero-sum game.

Is there a cure for alcohol hangovers?
Hangovers also have an emotional component. Kingsley Amis, who was, in his own words, one of the foremost drunks of his time, and who wrote three books on drinking, described this phenomenon as “the metaphysical hangover”: “When that ineffable compound of depression, sadness (these two are not the same), anxiety, self-hatred, sense of failure and fear for the future begins to steal over you, start telling yourself that what you have is a hangover. . . . You have not suffered a minor brain lesion, you are not all that bad at your job, your family and friends are not leagued in a conspiracy of barely maintained silence about what a shit you are, you have not come at last to see life as it really is.”

When Bad Things Happen - What to Do in Case of Disaster
Earthquake

What the city would do: Dig survivors out of crumbled tenements and town houses and race to extinguish blazes fueled by broken gas lines. A minimum 5 on the Richter scale would level homes all over the five boroughs, and more deaths would result later as destabilized buildings are toppled by aftershocks and pedestrians are pummeled by falling air conditioners and other debris. Though two major fault patterns run under Manhattan, experts say a big quake is unlikely.

Worst-case scenario: A high-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter within the five boroughs. Aboveground subway lines and bridges crack, and airports are disabled.

What you can do: Live in a steel-framed high-rise built after seismic codes were adopted in 1996. At the first tremor, grab a cell phone and take cover in a doorway or under a solid piece of furniture. Protect your head. If you can, turn off natural gas, water, and electricity, but beware of aftershocks. Cover your nose and mouth with clothing to avoid breathing toxic dust.

New 17 foot Wind Turbine
This page is a bit of an update on our 17 foot wind turbine design. The old page is HERE and explains in some detail how we built our first 17 foot turbine. This version contains several updates. We built the first one over 3 years ago. While the first one has been a pretty good machine, we have suffered a couple of stator burnouts. The new version features larger rotors, slightly stronger magnets, slightly bigger coils wound with thicker wire and lower resistance (less heat in the stator). The new arrangement really seems to make for quite an honest 3kW machine and we've seen peaks of nearly twice that.

We get a lot of email from people who are on the power grid who have great interest in building something like this to 'save on utility bills'. We have had a couple of these machines grid tied with good results, but... keep in mind the payback period is likely to be quite a while, or, possibly never depending on how well you take care of your batteries. Batteries are expensive! This machine is specifically designed for battery charging and it's probably quite useful and cost effective for people who already have 24, or 48V renewable energy systems in place. For more information about wind power basics check out this page: http://otherpower.com/bottom_line.shtml.

Why go with Boxee? A few reasons, really: it's free to download, it's got a ton of great applications and add-ins, and it was, like XMBC, built with a big-screen interface in mind. When I was done installing it on top of a basic Ubuntu desktop, I had a system that could easily handle 720p and even (with some very easy overclocking) 1080p video files, run Hulu streams in full screen with very little glitching, and let me show off Flickr streams, Facebook photos, Pandora or Last.fm music, to name just a few of many content streams.

Plus, with Ubuntu installed and set up, you can easily run any other Linux app on your TV—like Hulu Desktop, a huge-screen Firefox, or whatever you can imagine.

Gall Stone Cleanse
Most people are likely to have hundreds of gall stones. They are soft and don't show up on an x-ray unless they calcify. However, they cause problems such as gall bladder attack by blocking the bile ducts even when they are not calcified. Many people have experienced the non-surgical removal of gall stones. One gall stone cleanse is detailed in Hulda Clark's book "The Cure for all Diseases". I did her gall bladder flush, and sure enough - next morning the toilet was filled with gall stones. However, her program required the ingestion of a lot of Epsom salts which I found very difficult (I vomited when I had my third lot the next morning, and so I took only half of what she recommended). I figured that there had to be an easier and healthier way.

The Ultimate Jell-O Shot - Gelatin Viagra
The purpose of this experiment was to determine the highest possible concentration of alcohol attainable in a Jell-O shot, while still maintaining the structural integrity (i.e., the gelling properties) of the gelatin. For the purposes of our study, structural integrity was defined as the ability of the gelatin to hold its shape when removed from its container. Recipes for Jell-O shots are often accompanied by the explanation that only a certain amount of liquor can be added to Jell-O shots, the reason being that a minimum amount of water is necessary to enable the gelatin to gel, and too much alcohol will prevent this. How much water is enough? Or more to the point, how much alcohol is too much? As you will see, too much is much, much more than we would have guessed.

Roll Your Own Frappuccinos
1. Sterilize some bottles. We boiled 5 Starbucks bottles (and their caps) for about 10 minutes.
2. Brew 12 oz. of vanilla flavored coffee.
3. In a pot, mix coffee with 6 cups of whole milk, 1 cup of sugar, and a little less than 1 tsp of powdered cocoa mix (might work fine with Hershey syrup, but we used Nestle’s Carlos V mix).
4. Stir it up and ladle it into the bottles. Done in less than 20 minutes!

This completely filled 5 bottles and would have mostly filled a 6th if we’d had that many. It tastes really good! Not exactly like a frap, but it’s our first batch, and it’s got its own personality.

As I was mixing it, I was amazed at how much milk there was. When you buy a frappuccino, you’re basically buying a bottle of milk with tiny amounts of other flavorings in it.

The next time we try this, we’ll cut back on the sugar a little (maybe 3/4 cup) and make the coffee a little stronger.

If you want to have the server generate a checksum for you, then just replace the last digit with a question mark ("?"). By the way, those digits you sometimes see to the left or the right of the barcodes are typically part of the number encoded in the bars. And, please note, the barcodes that you can generate here must consist only of digits (not letters or punctuation).

Build a MAME Cabinet in 24 Hours
The Story of a Cabinet Built in 24 Hours

Okay, so now I've got your attention - it's true - the cabinet construction was completed in 24 hours, but it took about three months to get around to the last few bits (like decorating the unit), so don't complain if after one day you don't get something that looks like the unit on the left!

Please browse through the links at the top and bottom of each page. They will cover the construction diary (in blow-by-blow detail), the finishing of the unit together with a shopping list, prices and then information on the PC inside the unit. Finally you will be able to download some plans we created after building the device, together with some of the graphics that are on the unit.

If you want to get in touch, you can reach me at chris@tochris.com.

Enjoy the site!
