SCIENCE HOBBYIST: how transistor works, an alternate viewpoint
8 days ago
But these were similar to black-box circuits, and none of them said HOW a transistor works, how can a small current have any effect on a larger one???? And nobody else seemed curious. Everyone else in the class seemed to think that to memorize the equations was the same as learning concepts and gaining understanding of the device. (R. Feynman calls this the Euclidean or "Greek viewpoint;" the love of mathematics, as opposed to the physicists' " Babylonian viewpoint" where concepts are far more important than equations.)

A Cross-Sectional Study of Belonging in Engineering
5 weeks ago
Using previously validated measures, sense of belonging in various engineering communities has been studied. Differences between the local (immediate) community and the larger community to which the engineering student or faculty belongs have been evaluated in conjunction with the sense of belonging experienced by engineers in six academic venues including conferences, classrooms, and retreats. Overall, the results show that engineering sense of belonging is highest in local (immediate) venues in which community building is part of the venue mission, but lowest in undergraduate engineering classrooms. The sense of belonging in the larger community to which the engineer belongs tends to be highest in venues dominated by students from international higher education institutions and among faculty invested in engineering education. A common thread for all venues that score high in sense of belonging is an emphasis on community associated with the venue, whether bound together by similar research, by management structure, or by other overt importance placed on community building effort. These results suggest that emphasis on community building improves participant’s sense of belonging, but also shows that inherent community (assumed in the classroom setting) does not necessarily generate or maintain sense of belonging in an engineering community. Hence, the results of this study make a case for overt community building effort as an essential part of supporting the quality.
