Federal Linux Security Resources/checklists — The Homepage of Tracy R Reed
A very good use of our tax dollars and worth the attention of sysadmins.
I often say that most successful attacks and vulnerabilities are failures of imagination (when they aren't outright laziness/penny pinching). The authors of these documents have seen a lot of attacks and know something about how things should be configured to give your servers a fighting chance. These guides and checklists are great to look over for inspiration and ideas on how to better lock down your systems. Look over each item and think to yourself: "What on earth happened such that they had to put this on a security checklist?"

How to install Linux Mint via USB - Linux Mint Community
Traditionally, tools such as 'Startup Disk Creator' or 'UNetbootin' were needed to install Linux Mint via USB.

With hybrid images, you can simply write the content of the ISO and make a bootable USB stick which can install Linux Mint by using the 'dd' command.

Ramblings of a Mad Computer Guy: Network Adapter Priority Windows Server 2008 R2
Turns out Microsoft hid it from us, sort of... What you do is go to Network and Sharing Center and click on the change adapter settings link. From there, if you have the Desktop Experience installed, you might not have the menu bar running across the top. You need to hit the Alt button on your keyboard in order to get the menu bar to show up. From the Advanced menu option, click Advanced Settings.

Nmap is the definitive port scanner. If you have any need for this sort of tool it would behoove you to become familiar with at least the basics of this most excellent application.
This guide is by no means comprehensive -- it's nothing more than a short walkthrough of how I have come to use some of the various options. For a thorough look at Nmap's capabilities, I suggest you also consult the man page.

A typical email scenario: you're a developer, and you've got a development Linux box at home. You need to be able to send emails from your code or cron jobs, but you're too lazy to set up a full fledged email server on your LAN. Or you just want to use an email account provided by Google Apps, Yahoo, or your ISP.

Top Executive Recruiters Agree There Are Only Three True Job Interview Questions - Forbes
The only three true job interview questions are:
1.  Can you do the job?
2.  Will you love the job?
3.  Can we tolerate working with you?

That’s it.  Those three.  Think back, every question you’ve ever posed to others or had asked of you in a job interview is a subset of a deeper in-depth follow-up to one of these three key questions.  Each question potentially may be asked using different words, but every question, however it is phrased, is just a variation on one of these topics: Strengths, Motivation, and Fit.

How I Use OmniFocus to Organize My Life
I’ve noticed a resurgence on the web of people talking about OmniFocus and how they use the app to manage their task lists. Despite being a user for nearly three years — since the first public beta — for some reason I’ve never gotten around to writing about why I find it so useful and how it fits into my own workflow. So that’s what this post will attempt to do.

tenshu.net: A sysadmin talks OpenSSH tips and tricks
I've seen a few articles recently on sites like HackerNews which claimed to cover some advanced SSH techniques/tricks. They were good articles, but for me (as a systems administrator) didn't get into the really powerful guts of OpenSSH.
So, I figured that I ought to pony up and write about some of the more advanced tricks that I have either used or seen others use. These will most likely be relevant to people who manage tens/hundreds of servers via SSH. Some of them are about actual configuration options for OpenSSH, others are recommendations for ways of working with OpenSSH.

Solution for "No network provider accepted the given network path" - Nuo Yan
When you try to access a network path (FQDN) by “start”-“run”-”machine_nameshare_name”, and meet error message “No network provider accepted the given network path.” But when you open the Command Console (“start“-“run“-“cmd“), you can ping that machine successfully by using the FQDN.

If you meet this situation, run “sfc /scannow” may be able to solve the problem. If this method shouldn't work, you may also try this tip:

http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBR/tip8500/rh8517.htm

One of them will resolve the problem and enable you to access a shared location successfully by “start”-”run”-”machine_nameshare_name”.

Staying safe: protect yourself when selling a game console
With the current generation of consoles, online play has become ubiquitous, leaving us with systems that are constantly connected to the Internet. Xbox Live's Major Nelson » How the Xbox 360 download queue works
When we launched the web marketplace in last November, we introduced the ability for Xbox LIVE members to browse Marketplace through Xbox.com and easily add game and video content to your Xbox 360 download queue. That meant when you turned on your Xbox 360 console, and signed into LIVE, you would immediately start downloading items you added from the web Marketplace. If you own more than one console, or travel with your Xbox LIVE profile on an MU or HDD, it’s possible that your downloads don’t start immediately upon sighing in to LIVE, and that has left you puzzled.

King's "Everything You Need to Know About Writing Successfull -- in Ten Minutes"
THAT'S RIGHT. I know it sounds like an ad for some sleazy writers' school, but I really am going to tell you everything you need to pursue a successful and financially rewarding career writing fiction, and I really am going to do it in ten minutes, which is exactly how long it took me to learn. It will actually take you twenty minutes or so to read this essay, however, because I have to tell you a story, and then I have to write a second introduction. But these, I argue, should not count in the ten minutes.

VMware vSphere Pricing Options
The pricing and licensing model for vSphere is broken into two categories known as vSphere kits and vSphere editions. vSphere kits are all-in-one offerings that delivery all the necessary licenses and features/functionality required to getting virtualization running in an environment. Kits have defined limits depending on the type of kit purchased. vSphere editions are a la carte offerings generally designed for larger IT environments with a broader set of requirements. These offerings have broader entitlements as well. Please see each section below for specific details.
