Dave French’s U-Brew « PPNA Happenings
If you haven’t noticed the U-Brew store on Washtenaw Avenue has a big ‘FOR RENT’ sign in the window and the store is all but packed up. Today I stopped in to see Dave and asked him what was going on. The bad news is that the store is closing but for a good reason. Dave told me he plans on going into full scale production of ‘Frog Island’ beer and he needed a place with a loading dock as well as time to promote the beer. Dave found a place in Scio Twp. that fit his needs so he’ll be moving away from Ypsilanti and will no longer serve as a U-brew store. If you need beer making supplies I believe Mike still sells them at the old farm bureau on Forest avenue and Dave is closing out some of the items at his store (good time to pick up a car boy or Mead. For folks, like me, who enjoy stopping in and talking with dave and picking up the occasional supply the closing of the store is a sad piece of news

Glendon Swarthout - Willow Run
Willow RunWillow Run was Glendon's very first published novel, in 1943, written after putting in nine-hour days as a riveter at the famous B-24 bomber plant outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He wrote it in six months, for he knew there was a market for a patriotic book about the war effort on the home front during this biggest of all wars. Sure enough, he got a small advance from a publisher and the novel was hurried into print after a page one rewrite. Glendon always acknowledged it in his backlist of titles, but he was embarrassed by Willow Run, referring to it sourly as "a piece of crap" in a short autobiography he wrote the year before he died, which is included in the latest compilation of his short stories, Easterns and Westerns, to be published by Michigan State University Press, summer of 2001.

"In 1882 the Ypsilanti Paper Company drilled a well near to its paper mill in Ypsilanti, Michigan, with an idea of securing pure artesian water needed in the process of paper making."

Water was found--and with the well came the the accidental discovery that the water cured cancer. (A laborer at the mill consumed the water for four months and his skin cancer disappeared; word spread and soon afflicted pilgrims were flocking to Ypsilanti. Ypsi was for a time famed for its mineral water and known for its numerous sanitariums.)

MASTERMIND: Richard Murphy
Richard "Murph" Murphy and his wife, Cara Talaska, live just off Cross St. in Ypsilanti, in a real neighborhood where they not only know their neighbors, they get together for dinners on a regular basis. They don't have a garage, so they share a lawnmower with a neighbor who does. Their 100-year-old (give or take five years) home is within walking distance of downtown, Depot Town, Eastern Michigan University and their community garden plot at Frog Island Park.

For an urban planner like Murphy, it's a little slice of paradise.

Post No 1: Access Points
And there are other remarkable things about this initiative… I didn’t hire one person to make this happen!

My staff readjusted their workload to make it happen. They are a truly committed team. We didn’t buy one single new computer. Washtenaw County IT department donated computers from their "technology graveyard". We learned to do more with less.

The volunteers are so great at the Access Points we dub them Ambassadors. USDOL came out for a visit, and gave them and the County Commissioners recognitions and awards as well as a small Performance for Excellence Grant as being an outstanding leader in the field.

We are now taking this to the B-side --getting "business" involved and committed. The Ambassadors meet bi-monthly to review and evaluate its goals and get technical assistance from community specialists. Diane Keller, CEO, Ypsilanti Chamber of Commerce visited the Ambassadors to talk about business involvement in the community.

The Ann Arbor Chronicle » Chapel Hill, Welcome to Ann Arbor
Trips like these aren’t unconditionally supported, though. This summer, three aldermen from Carrboro, a smaller town neighboring Chapel Hill (think Ypsilanti), questioned the value of the trip. Alderman Randee Haven-O’Donnell had this to say to the local newspaper: “This is the wrong time to be spending on non-specific, untargeted items. Computer program at the Gilbert Residence helps seniors get back in the world - Latest from the Ann Arbor News - MLive.com
Gilbert Residence, a nonprofit senior care center in Ypsilanti, has become the first facility in Southeast Michigan to use a science-based computer program intended to help seniors rewire their brains, and tune back in to the world around them. Unlike most mind-fitness software in an industry that raked in $225 million last year, Brain Fitness is based on medical studies that indicate that, as vision, hearing and fine motor skills worsen with age, people start getting garbled signals, which they eventually just tune out. In addition, when people retire from work, most stop learning new skills, remembering names, figuring out how to make something work, and actively listening to the people around them.

Mark Maynard - great deal at haab's for mm.com readers
My thought was that the money could pay for the hosting of this site, and, more importantly, that the ads could motivate people in my audience to check out locally owned and operated businesses. All I would ask from the business owner (in addition to the $100) was that they’d offer our readers a great deal on something they might actually want… So, a few business owners wrote in and said they’d like to participate. The first was Ypsi’s most historic restaurant, Haab’s. (That’s their coupon above.) They’re offering their most well-known and loved entree, Chicken in the Basket, for just $6!
