Hankooki Heikki - Heikinpäivä Special Honoree
Each year, the Finnish Theme Committee selects one person whose work toward preserving and promoting Finnish culture in the area goes above and beyond "normal" efforts. That person is the festival's "Hankooki Heikki" and presides over the festivities, wearing the crown and robe that come with the honor. The first two Heikki honorees, however, did not appear in costume.

Telegrams
These telegrams were communicated back and forth from late July of 1913 until the end of the strike between James MacNaughton, then Second Vice President of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company (C & H), Quincy Shaw, the president of the company. The telegrams were sent via the Western Union Telegraph Company, written in code. The two simply took a number of key words and replaced them with random words, so that the communications would not be made public. They were trying to keep as much of a lid on the strike as they possibly could by doing this.

New mining boom may be in store for Upper Michigan - Michigan News, Updates, Photos & Video | Detroit, Lansing - MLive.com
"There is definitely a potential for resurgence in mining in the U.P., but to what degree I don't know," said Jon Cherry, a project manager for Kennecott Minerals Co., which plans a nickel and copper mine in Marquette County. "The low-hanging fruit, the easily identifiable and developed ore bodies are gone. It's harder and more expensive to develop what remains."

DNR - Remembering Michigan's Historic Moose Lift
On Jan. 20, 1985, separate convoys carrying men and equipment set out from Michigan on a mission to reach the 3,000-square-mile Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada.

Over the next two weeks, this team of wildlife biologists and veterinarians from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, working with a team of Canadian specialists from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, would locate, capture, transport and release a number of wild moose to form the nucleus of a new population in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Nicks 41 Speedway - Ishpeming Michigan
Web - 9/25/2004 This 1/4 mile drag strip was built in the early 70s on the grounds of the old Dexter Landing Field on US-41 near Ishpeming. Coincidentally, the Evergreen Drive-In was on the lot next to it! By all accounts this track was non-sanctioned and was built by racing enthusiasts who felt that the old runway would make a great drag strip!

Upper Peninsula Ski Hill Round-Up : The Premium Upper Peninsula Blog
The Western Upper Peninsula is home to 10 ski hills and some of the finest skiing and snowboarding in the Midwest. Among the hills you’ll find great variety… family resorts, backcountry skiing, terrain parks, touristy resorts, and more secluded hills. I haven’t been to all of them yet, so far I’ve been to six of the ten. You can expect to see me as a regular at Marquette Mountain this season.

Badger Blog Alliance: Talk Like A Yooper Day 2008 is Just Around the Corner
Just a friendly reminder for all of our readers-Talk Like a Yooper Day 2008 will be November 30. In case you've forgotten the rule for the date, it is the day of the first Packer home game after the opening of Wisconsin's deer gun hunt season. You may feel free to talk like a Yooper tomorrow or Monday, but if you don't see the blaze orange at Lambeau Field, it isn't Talk Like a Yooper Day.

The Polish Pioneers of Calumet, Michigan
This blog explores the Polish community of Calumet, Houghton Co., Michigan. They were not the largest ethnic group- but many Midwestern families trace their ancestry back to a miner in Calumet. The first settlers were from German Poland. The 1910 US Census enumerated miners hailing from Russian Poland and Austrian Poland, as well.

Congress Pizza offers a good pie and a great atmosphere. The pizza crust is crackery thin and the bland but palatable sauce is spread atop a layer of cheese to maintain the crust's crispness. Though this is an odd pizza, we enjoyed it enough to make two trips during our stay. Part of our enjoyment, though, arose from the feeling of the place. Its paneled walls adorned with countless photos highlighting Ishpeming's athletic, labor and social history and its bright red vinyl-upholstered booths filled with local townspeople happily dining atop formica tables, Congress Pizza draws outsiders into another era, another world, and another way of looking at the world. A more distinct distillation of small town America would be difficult to find, and the place itself seems constructed to make a definite imprint upon visitors. I will gladly return to Congress Pizza--which, incidentally, has a very friendly, gregarious owner and staff--as much for the ambience as for the food.

Tummy Treasure: In Search of Cudighi
Cudighi is a sausage found only in two parts of the world- one small part of Italy, and one small part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. And finding a recipe is just as difficult as finding the sausage. I found two recipes that are very different, but I think by using both recipes as a guide, I could recreate the cudighi we had. Here is the first one, which looks close, but doesn't have the fennel seeds or crushed red pepper flakes that our sausage had. It also has more cinnamon than ours did- as the cinnamon was not noticeable at all.

Jiblog: Talk like a Yooper Day
In discussing Talk like a Pirate Day, Lance Burri has brought up "Talk like a Yooper Day." (For those of you not from the upper Midwest, a Yooper is a citizen of Michigan's U.P.) I love the idea. I propose that it take place on the first Sunday (or Monday) of the Wisconsin gun deer hunting season with a home Packer game. In the case of those rare seasons where the Packers do not have a home game during deer hunting, then it should take place during the second week of deer camp. Ya der hey!

Mother's Kitchen: Pickled Eggs
In Houghton, where MTU is located. there is a bar called the B&B which is arguably the most famous pickled egg place in the U.P. It's located on M26 on the way to Ontonagon, but it is still in town. The bar features a sticky floor, an unleveled pool table with crooked cues, and is frequented by locals. The B&B used to serve a Wisconsin beer called "Gilt Edge", but it no longer exists. I think they serve Old Milwaukee in it's place. Back in the day, you could get a beer in a small pilsner glass (called a "shell" in Yooper speak) and a pickled egg for 80 cents. This was called a "boneless chicken dinner" by the locals. I know people that regularly make a pilgrimage to the B&B from downstate just for the pickled eggs, but I will save you the 500 miles each way by sharing their recipe that someone once gave me when I was a student.

Media Mouse: Public Comment on Fish Threatened by Sulfide Mine Re-opened - Briefs - Grand Rapids, Michigan News & Independent Media
Save the Wild UP--an organization opposing the construction of an environmentally destructive sulfide mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula--that the United States Fish and Wild Service is soliciting additional public input on whether or not the Coaster Brook Trout should be considered an endangered species. The trout's only remaining spawning grounds is the Salmon Trout River that is threatened by possible pollution from the Eagle Project Sulfide Mine on the Yellow Dog Plains. Save the Wild UP encourages people to review information on the trout and comment. Designating the Coaster Brook Trout as an endangered species could be an important step in preventing the opening of the Eagle Project mine.
