At the Ivey Road study site, 2 volunteers spent over an hour in the water and not only did they fail to find stoneflies, they only found three living creatures (1 caddisfly, 1 worm, and 1 dragonfly). This is a tremendously poor insect population for a stream that historically was very diverse and abundant, and it tells us that something unusual has happened to either the habitat or the water quality on this section of Mill Creek.

"In 1882 the Ypsilanti Paper Company drilled a well near to its paper mill in Ypsilanti, Michigan, with an idea of securing pure artesian water needed in the process of paper making."

Water was found--and with the well came the the accidental discovery that the water cured cancer. (A laborer at the mill consumed the water for four months and his skin cancer disappeared; word spread and soon afflicted pilgrims were flocking to Ypsilanti. Ypsi was for a time famed for its mineral water and known for its numerous sanitariums.)

Save the Wild UP » New Sulfide Mining Documentary Show Times and Locations
"Mining Madness, Water Wars: The Great Lakes in the Balance" is a timely, compelling documentary that lays bare a controversial proposal to blast a mine beneath a blue ribbon trout stream in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The 33-minute story is told through the passionate voices of scientists, community activists, tribal officials, and others who care about protecting our most precious asset water. Watch a short excerpt that focuses on one aspect of the controversy — the apparent disregard for Native American treaty rights.

HydrAid BioSand Water Filter » Blog Archive » Dow Chemical and International Aid Announce Partnership To Address Global Safe Water Crisis
Dow’s resin contribution provides a vital material component used in the manufacture of the plastic HydrAid™ filter, which, at just seven pounds, is viewed as a major design improvement to the traditional, 300-pound concrete BioSand filter currently in use in more than 70 countries worldwide. Manufactured by Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Cascade Engineering, the injection-molded, non-electric device has no moving or replacement parts, is far easier to transport, and can provide clean, safe water at the rapid rate of 47 liters per hour, meeting all of a family’s daily water needs, including drinking, bathing and washing clothes.

Integrated Kinetic Energy: A new metric for tropical cyclone destructive potential
Tropical cyclone damage potential, as currently defined by the Saffir-Simpson scale and the maximum sustained surface wind speed in the storm, fails to consider the area impact of winds likely to force surge and waves or cause particular levels of damage. Integrated kinetic energy represents a framework that captures the physical process of ocean surface stress forcing waves and surge while also taking into account structural wind loading and the spatial coverage of the wind. Integrated kinetic energy was computed from gridded, objectively analyzed surface wind fields of 19 hurricanes representing large and small storms. A wind destructive potential rating was constructed by weighting wind speed threshold contributions to the integrated kinetic energy, based on observed damage in Hurricanes Andrew, Hugo, and Opal. A combined storm surge and wave destructive potential rating was assigned according to the integrated kinetic energy contributed by winds greater than tropical storm force.

Rayle, Roger
Roger Rayle really likes Google Earth. Before Google Earth came along, he spent tens of hours every few months creating two-dimensional depictions of new well sampling data for a local groundwater cleanup which he has been monitoring as a citizen volunteer for over fourteen years. Now with the basic version of Google Earth, in a couple of hours, he can generate a quarterly updated, four-dimensional plot showing the location of over 16,000 pollution samples taken since 1986. A bar whose height represents the concentration of the contaminant is shown at the exact X-Y longitude/latitude for each sample location with the fourth dimension being date sampled. The result viewed on Google Earth gives a clear indication of which ways the contamination plumes are moving, how fast, and at what concentrations.

JS Online: Headwaters are no place for toxic new mining
Take a moment to think about Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the nearby patches of Wisconsin, Lake Superior and Lake Michigan that border it. Picture the sparkling waterfalls, blueberries, brook trout and wave-washed shores there — the multitude of reasons so many think of this as God’s Country.
Thing is, change is in the air — and there’s a fair chance that it won’t be a good thing for the unspoiled waters of the U.P. — or for our water quality here, downstream, in Wisconsin.
