[0812.1536] Mountain trail formation and the active walker model
december 2008 by vielmetti
Abstract: We extend the active walker model to address the formation of paths on gradients, which have been observed to have a zigzag form. Our extension includes a new rule to simulate an aversion to falling, which prohibits direct descent or ascent on steep inclines. It is shown that simple modification of the active walker model is unable to reproduce the zigzag trails. Further augmentation of the model to incorporate persistence of direction (representing a reluctance to change direction too suddenly) leads to appropriate pattern formation. The need to include persistence of direction to explain mountain trails indicates that a similar rule should also be included in the standard active walker model.

The Archdruid Report: Solvitur Ambulando
november 2008 by vielmetti
Solvitur ambulando is an old bit of Latin that still gets a little literary use these days. Taken literally, it means “it is solved by walking;” a more idiomatic English translation might be “you’ll find the answer as you go.” An adaptive approach to the crisis of industrial society might well take this as a watchword.

The Ann Arbor Chronicle » Column: Waiting Too Long for the Go
october 2008 by vielmetti
The city of Ann Arbor has been installing some new traffic lights around town. Traditional signals display a “Walk” light for as long as 25 seconds. This new type of signal displays a “Walk” light for only four seconds, out of a total cycle of up to 90 seconds. One example of such a signal is the crossing of State Street at Liberty Street downtown.

Back To Work: How to Kickstart a Low-Productivity Day
september 2008 by vielmetti
Walk around. Anywhere will do. You can walk around your office. Visit a floor you haven’t been to before. Or maybe you have time to go around the block or visit that park down the street. It’s all about looking for something positive you have never seen. Taking time to smell the roses may be just a cliché, but those roses could be anything. A restaurant you’ve never seen. A friend’s cubicle. Some kids playing ball. Life is going on in the world around you. You just need to notice.

86 y/o walks from Paradise, MI to Hell, MI
september 2008 by vielmetti
Putting one foot in front of the other for 40 + years, Klein first began walking as a health benefit for an ailing back. Since 2004 he’s walked the breadth and length of the state. In Sept. 2004 he walked 212 miles in 11 days across the widest part of Michigan. His north to south walks began in 2005. Klein enjoyed that so much, he decided to repeat the same scenic route in 2006 and again in 2007. He appreciated the wonderful, supportive people who joined him along the way as he walked to raise money for charity. This year, he hopes to enjoy the company of even more walkers to raise money for Michigan Hospice. Walkers of all ages are welcome to accompany him at any point on the walk and for any distance. Check with your regional Hospice for updates, or the local newspapers in the following counties: Chippewa, Mackinac, Cheboygan, Otsego, Crawford, Roscommon, Clare, Isabella, Gratiot, Clinton, Ingham, Livingston.
