insixitive Archives Business School is a Joke
That’s the root of the problem. That’s what the business school teaches us to do. Not once has a professor told us to “make great products” or “do something people love.” Why? For one, it’s harder to teach engineering to a marketer than it is to teach marketing to an engineer (take Google). The thing is, we’re designed to be investment bankers and management consultants, the professionals who guys like Warren Buffet will tell you are just “friction” in the economic system. And this coming from a guy who has created more wealth than almost any human ever. From the Berkeshire Hathaway 2005 annual report: “For investors as a whole, returns decrease as motion increases.”

The kind of people who are affected by The Ann Arbor News becoming annarbor.com are generally less hardcore about their sports coverage.

But with the transition to the web, they are promising to link out a lot, so having more of a two-way relationship with the local news sites would help, probably just in terms of Google ranking and maybe some traffic. Right now I link to them and The Free Press fairly often, and I don’t think I’ve ever received a link from any of those sources. That seems a little unbalanced.

TalkingPoints: An RFID-based Orientation System for People With Blindness
Its goal is explore the possibility of using technology as a means for blind individuals to orient themselves in both outdoor and interior spaces, and to learn more about their surroundings during their normal walking from place to place, or when they choose to explore an area to learn what's nearby. Currently, we do this by tagging objects of interest with an RFID reader, and providing an RFID reader and computer to read the tags. Unlike ordinary RFID readers, the TalkingPoints reader speaks the information conveyed by the tag to the user.

Behind the scenes: University of Michigan's Pfizer site acquisition - Michigan Business Innovation - Nathan Bomey - Michigan Business Review - MLive.com
Turns out the university was already considering whether it should acquire the site. All 174 acres. (Or 175, or 177 depending on whom you believe.) And, of course, we now know the university is close to sealing a deal to purchase the whole site for $108 million.

Don't kid yourself: The university had a vested interest in the future of that property, which is nestled right next to U-M's North Campus. If Pfizer had opted to raze the 30 buildings to save on its tax bill, U-M would've been devastated.

"There's a lot of resources there. There's some tremendously good laboratory space. We didn't want that to be taken down," U-M's Stephen Forrest told me. "You don't want a resource like that to be razed."

Computer-based educational communications at the University of Michigan
A series of studies at the University of Michigan has explored information systems as a basis for learning environments (Zinn, 1974). Currently staff at the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) is looking at educational uses of computer-based conferencing, for example, computer-based seminars and computer-assisted curriculum development. Departments trying other uses, for example, computer-based committee work and computer-aided proposal preparation, find the basic software developed at CRLT to be applicable. However, some of the procedures described here are modified for the various purposes. A paper now in preparation by the same authors reports the history of computer-based conferencing at the University of Michigan. In brief, the activity did not become practical until the spring of 1975 when the CONFER I program (in Fortran) was completed by Robert Parnes.

Karl Zinn - IAE-Pedia
One of the first places to start exploring computer conferencing systems was the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) at the University of Michigan. In 1971 Karl Zinn received funding from the National Science Foundation and the Exxon Education Foundation to study methods of using computers in education. He started experimenting with existing computer conferencing systems in 1972, but found them expensive and restrictive to use. In response to this, Robert Parnes developed Confer in 1975 as a dissertation project. Confer ran on the University's immense MTS mainframe system (see also here) and its use was initially limited to those few students and faculty that had computer accounts in those days.

Explained: What are the murals on the walls of the Graduate Library's Reference Room? | The Michigan Daily
But students curious about the figures and images in the murals are left guessing –– there are no descriptions in the Reference Room for the paintings. So what, then, are those two huge works of art?

As it turns out, the oil-on-canvas paintings are titled “The Arts of Peace” and “The Arts of War,” and were originally created for the Manufactures and Liberal arts building at the World’s Columbian Exposition, also called The Chicago World’s Fair, held in 1893.

Gari Melchers, a Detroit born artist, created the two works. Melcher would go on to paint murals for the Library of Congress and the Detroit Public Library.

Changing how fans follow Michigan football | The Michigan Daily
To put it simply, Cook’s website has become the place for Michigan football coverage. In just a few years, he has overthrown the ranks of professional journalists who cover the team, representing a drastic change in the culture of news coverage (in this case, the coverage of Michigan football), a change that most major newspapers have yet to adapt to. Traditional sports coverage is vulnerable to new competition in its own way. As Cook has shown, a guy in the stands can have an edge over the big-name columnists in the press box.

Utah (0-0) @ Michigan (0-0) - Block U
For Utah to leave Ann Arbor with a victory, things will need to happen and they will probably need a little luck on their side. I say this because Michigan is going to be fired up for this game. Not because they lost to Appalachian State last year, not because they have something to prove, but because it's a new era for Michigan football. As they transition from Lloyd Carr to Rich Rodriguez, the anticipation and excitement following this team is pretty massive. These players are going to be invested and pumped to start anew. They want to write a new chapter of tradition in the vast book known as Michigan football. This day, this new era, unfortunately, begins against Utah.

Alumni step up efforts to recruit underrepresented minorities | The Michigan Daily
In the spring, Nouhoum Bane, an investment banker in New York City, received an e-mail with the names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers of three New York high school students. Bane called them and offered to talk.

But the students weren’t looking for investment advice. Bane, a University alum, called because they were admitted to the University but hadn’t decided to enroll yet.

Bane, who is from Mali, is a mentor in the Each One/Reach One program, an Alumni Association initiative which pairs minority alumni with accepted underrepresented minority students, which the University defines as black, Latino or Native American.
