How twitter and gopher were born, (or) why you should make it work on the worst system first - Vacuum
january 2011 by vielmetti
"We took the Usenet (the Internet's newsgroup system) cookbook and put that into it," says McCahill. "That was the first thing - so first the Gopher was serving recipes up. We figured everybody ate, and it was a good way of illustrating what full-text searching could do."
If you were looking for recipes with eggplant, you simply typed in the word and the application would locate every eggplant reference - a dazzling capability in 1991.

This last is what really worries me. Who doesn’t want to be taken out of the boredom or sameness or pain of the present at any given moment? That’s what drugs are for, and that’s why people become addicted to them. Carr himself was once a crack addict (he wrote about it in “The Night of the Gun”). Twitter is crack for media addicts. It scares me, not because I’m morally superior to it, but because I don’t think I could handle it. I’m afraid I’d end up letting my son go hungry.

Comments Dead, Twitter Holds Smoking Gun
july 2009 by vielmetti
At the recent Real-Time CrunchUp 2009, Khris Loux, CEO of one of the web's largest commenting services, announced the
"death of the comment". This declaration was extremely significant as Loux's JS-Kit is currently installed on over 600,000 sites. He blames the death on social media sites like Twitter and Flickr and the rise of "parallel channels away from [the] product". In essence, dialogue has moved from a singular destination to a series of parallel but separate social networking channels.

How to stop blogging : Article : Nature
july 2009 by vielmetti
But some of the most valuable scientific meetings are more focused and deliberative, and are by invitation only. These intellectually intimate gatherings are valuable precisely because the researchers who attend feel free to speculate and to stimulate their colleagues, and to try to establish new research agendas. Whether an attendee is a blogger or a reporter or a practising researcher is immaterial. The meeting is 'off the record', and all have to sign up to that.
Closed or open? Meeting organizers need to be clear in their minds which of these two approaches is appropriate, and be explicit about it from start to finish. The consequence that, in competitive fields, presentations at open meetings will become even more protective and boring is an inevitable consequence of the Internet.

I Am Stunningly Uninterested In Diller And Malone’s Opinion Of Twitter
july 2009 by vielmetti
A lot of people wondered how Google would ever make any money with a search engine. That problem was obviously solved. In any community with vast numbers of highly energetic and passionate users, there will be a variety of ways to make money. The only thing that can stop these services are high costs (YouTube and Facebook suffer from this) or someone building a better mousetrap (Facebook did this to MySpace who did this to Friendster).
By the way, News Corp’s Rupert Murdoch isn’t impressed, either, saying that the site is “a tough investment to justify because it has not yet come up with a sustainable way to make money.” He also gave the exact wrong answer to two questions: “Asked if he was considering buying Twitter, Murdoch said, “No.” Asked about selling MySpace, he said, “Hell no.”"

But the point, I hope, is clear.
The old means of control don’t work.
The old categories don’t work.
The old ways of thinking won’t work.
We all need to come to terms with that.
Fundamentally, the old media won’t control news dissemination in the future. And organisations can’t control access using old forms of accreditation any more.

For Bastide, the object isn't to read the massive influx of daily tweets, but rather to use Twitter as a networking tool, almost a more collaborative version of email. "So here's what I do," he said. "Obviously, if someone sends me a direct message, I'll answer that. And if someone sends an @reply [a method of publicly responding to someone's tweet], depending on if it needs an answer or not I will answer that as well. Sometimes I'll post a question for something and I'll get 40 or 50 responses, and I can't respond to all of them personally."

James Governor’s Monkchips » Asymmetrical Follow: A Core Web 2.0 Pattern
december 2008 by vielmetti
But Twitter wasn’t designed for whales. It was designed for small shoals of fish. Which brings us to one of the big issues with Asymmetrical Follow - it introduces unexpected scaling problems. Twitter’s architecture didn’t cope all that well at first, but has performed a lot better since the message broker was re-architected using Scala LIFT, a new web application programming framework). The technical approach that is most appropriate to support Asymmetrical Follow is well known in the world of high scale enterprise messaging- its called Publish And Subscribe.

Twitter, Peripheral Perception, and Empathy - Eccentric Eclectica
november 2008 by vielmetti
Twitter becomes a empathic experience when I realize that all of these people are living their own individual lives and updating me on a small stream of that activity. They face the same frustrations with software installs, server configurations, and traffic. Sometimes they are out partying, sometimes they get drunk. They get angry. Somewhere, no doubt, someone is falling in love. And soon enough someone will propose marriage to someone else on Twitter, if they haven’t done it already. Twitter puts all this emotional expression into bite sized chunks that speed by on my phosphorescent computer screen. This is “Life on the Screen” a la Turkle.

Ernie The Attorney: Using Twitter during hurricanes (or other crises)
november 2008 by vielmetti
The reason I mention YatPundit and Nolanotes is that those were two people that I found to be very insightful and witty, qualities I look for in people I follow on Twitter. YatPundit was very helpful because he would watch all of the TV stations and keep up with press conferences and then distill the information into nice little twitter messages. It was much less stressful for me to check in with Yatpundit's twitter stream than to sit by the TV or radio. And, of course, once we lost power sitting by the TV was out of the question. The radio worked (on batteries) but it was too time consuming to fiddle with the dials. YatPundit became my official broadcast station, along with the few other people I followed on Twitter. To follow someone just go to their Twitter page and click on the 'Follow' button. When you are following several people their tweets all show up in one place so you can monitor everyone you are following very easily.

Interview @MarsPhoenix - Universe
november 2008 by vielmetti
So I started writing out some of the posts, and every time I tried to fit in something that said, you know, "the spacecraft is traveling at such and such miles per hour," I'd have to cut it down because it was too many characters. So then I'd have, you know, "Phoenix is..." and sometimes I couldn't even fit "Phoenix," so eventually I just switched it so it said "I am traveling at such and such miles per hour." Really, it was mostly to save on the characters posted to Twitter [Twitter has a 140 character limit on posts]. I waited to see how people would react, and a part of me thought that somebody was going to write back and say, "don't do that, that's silly." Instead, it just took off, and people really liked it. They liked the first-person aspect of it, even though they knew that somebody at JPL was doing it

The story I kicked off a few days ago, Tech layoffs: The scorecard, is a real bummer. On it, we're tracking the current layoffs in the tech economy. I hate the story, since each line on the sheet stands for real people who have lost jobs.
So earlier today I sent a query out to my Twitter followers: Send me good news. That led to this anti-layoff spreadsheet, the one tracking companies that are hiring. I present it here. Most recent entries are at the top. Happy hunting, everyone.

Subtraction 7.1 Beta: If It’s Too Social, You’re Too Old
october 2008 by vielmetti
After a decade-plus of working in this business then, this is what it means to be an interaction designer: what was once effortless now takes effort. It would be disingenuous of me to suggest that I’m old, but neither am I young anymore. Suddenly the sky is starting to darken with increasingly ominous clouds of obsolesence. In my twenties, new ways of thinking and doing seemed very natural, and adjusting to the landscape was elementary business. Now, fending off stagnation has to be added to my job description. Techdirt: The Impact Of Having Friends Never Fade Away
october 2008 by vielmetti
For many years, we've wondered about how new technologies may start to change the nature of friendship. In the past, friends would come and go over time, as friendships grew and receded during different stages of life for different reasons -- and that was fine. But in an age where everyone is connected electronically all of the time, and whether or not someone is a "friend" is a binary decision set at the click of a mouse, some are pointing out that it seems weird that social networks are setting up people to remain "friends" forever, even if they're not still friendly in real life.
