United Breaks Guitars | Dave Carroll Music.com
United has demonstrated they know how to keep their airline in the forefront of their customer’s minds and I wanted this project to expand upon that satirically. I’ve been done “being angry” for quite some time and, if anything, I should thank United. They’ve given me a creative outlet that has brought people together from around the world. We had a pile of laughs making the recording and the video while the images are spinning on how to make “United: Song 2” even better than the first. So, thanks United! If my guitar had to be smashed due to extreme negligence I’m glad it was you that did it. Now sit back and enjoy the show.

United States Patent: 6374176: nextbus
A system for notifying passengers waiting for public transit vehicles of the status of the vehicles, including the arrival times of vehicles at stops. The system includes global position determining devices located in the vehicles for determining the location of the vehicles along their routes. A central processor or computer is coupled to the global position determining devices for receiving the locations of vehicles therefrom. The processor is programmed to compute and update from the present location of the transit system vehicles and electronically stored information a transit data table which includes status information for all the vehicles in the system, including the location of scheduled stops, connections to other transit vehicles at the stops, and the arrival times of vehicles at their stops. The vehicle status and other information, including news and advertisements are then made available for public access

About NextBus Predictions
NextBus uses Global Position Satellite (GPS) technology and advanced computer modeling to track buses and streetcars on their routes. Taking into account the actual position of the transit vehicles, their intended stops, and the typical traffic patterns, NextBus estimates the bus arrivals with a high degree of accuracy. This estimate is updated constantly as the vehicles are tracked. The NextBus system is covered by U.S. Patents 6,006,159 and 6,374,176. The system is also produced under license from ArrivalStar, Inc. U.S. Patents 5,623,260; 6,411,891; 6,317,060; 6,415,207; 6,313,760 and 6,278,936.

Trillium Solutions blog » Blog Archive » Open source and open data make for transit innovation
And the second part of that is that — because Portland has a “creative class” type of person — people approached our executive management, and our General Manager challenged us to make resources available to this creative class in order to promote innovation. So these forces combined, and we took that and tried to take the resources that we have, the tools that we have been using internally, and leverage that and re-use it and face it to the public.

Readers vent on Metro bus service during snowstorms
After several days of intermittent Metro bus service because of the winter storms, some people are getting frustrated. We asked seattlepi.com readers to send us their comments. The frustration is likely to continue; because of icy streets Metro will be operating about half its regular weekday service on Wednesday.

TriMet says it's doing 'extraordinary job' - Breaking News From Oregon & Portland - OregonLive.com
"We're driving in the same conditions everyone else is, but we're doing it in 40-foot rectangular buses," said Steve Banta, executive director of operations. "We're doing an extraordinary job, from my perspective. This is a very good effort for foul weather."

Regardless, TriMet canceled two-thirds of its bus routes, forcing thousands of would-be riders to hike to stops that were open or find another way to work or shop. Some stood waiting for buses that never came. About 130 stalled and stuck buses littered the region at one point.

Future Tense: Where's your bus? The satellites know
In the Twin Cities, Metro Transit spent more than $12 million to outfit its buses with automatic vehicle location equipment. The NexTrip system uses global positioning satellites to monitor the location of a bus as it travels the street. The location is compared to the bus schedule to predict departure time for different stops.

Welcome to IEEE Xplore 2.0: Prediction of Transit Vehicle Arrival Time for Signal Priority Control: Algorithm and Performance
We develop an algorithm for predicting the arrival times of a transit vehicle at signalized intersections, with a focus on meeting the accuracy requirement associated with signal priority control applications. The algorithm uses both historical and real-time Global Positioning System (GPS) vehicle location data. There are no data from other detectors, such as loops or cameras. The arrival time prediction is formulated as an optimal a posteriori parameter estimation problem, where the model is consisted of a historical model and an adaptive model that adaptively adjusts its filter gain based on real-time data. The estimates generated by these two models are fused in a weighted average derived from the solution of the parameter estimation problem. The prediction algorithm adaptively adjusts its weight distribution using error variances obtained from the two models.

Book - John Urry, Kingsley DENNIS - After the Car
It is difficult to imagine a world without the car, and yet that is exactly what Dennis and Urry set out to do in this provocative new book. They argue that the days of the car are numbered: powerful forces around the world are undermining the car system and will usher in a new transport system sometime in the next few decades. Specifically, the book examines how several major processes are shaping the future of how we travel, including:

Funny thought perhaps, or maybe only in the Bay Area -- but our subway system -- BART, has an API. And it's kind of fun. I spent a couple of hours today hacking together an application, it's not all that useful, but one of these days something else will get an API that plugs in nicely and something interesting will happen.

Why mobile phones are the new travel guides -Times Online
Wikitude is the culmination of five years’ work for its Austrian designer, Philipp Breuss, who calls the system “augmented reality”. It’s built to run on Google’s new Android operating system for mobiles - and the first phone to have that is the just-released T-Mobile G1, which uses GPS and triangulation to know exactly where it is and which way it’s facing.

pocketMMaps is software for creating PocketMod-style books for a map image too large to fit on a single page. Maps are generated dynamically and then sliced in to (PocketMod) page-sized pieces and re-arranged on multiple sheets of paper so that when printed and folded you get a little book with the map laid out in handy 2-page spreads. Just like the maps you see in the back of travel guides. It may seem as though I have an obsession with destroying the travel book industry but I don't, really. It's just that their maps suck and their books are too big to fit in my back pocket.

Our view - Hits and misses - Holland, MI - The Holland Sentinel
Hit: Proposal for second daily Amtrak run

We agree with the Midwestern High Speed Rail Association, which is pushing for a second daily round trip between Chicago and West Michigan on Amtrak’s Pere Marquette line, with a schedule designed to make it easier for Chicago residents to visit this area. We’re big supporters of rail travel as an alternative to the car, but we’re far from optimistic that a second daily Amtrak run is in our future any time soon. Despite steadily rising ridership, the state of Michigan still has to pay Amtrak a $1.8 million annual subsidy to support the Pere Marquette. It’s not likely our cash-strapped state government is going to be eager to increase that figure anytime soon, or that Amtrak will expand service without greater state support.
