Arbor Update: Interesting Things Afoot in AATA Land
From what I see, the previous executive director had a very top-down style. That has created an AATA culture where the staff, while very competent, aren’t empowered to speak up. Everything I hear about the interim ED, Dawn Gabay, tells me that she was a great operations manager, but that’s a different skill set than what is needed for an Executive Director.

timetablepublisher - Google Code
The TimeTablePublisher is a single system that allows a transit agency to examine, modify, and transform raw scheduling data into easy-to-read timetables for customer information purposes. The application simplifies and accelerates the production of printed on-street schedules and web schedules, which is often a very time-consuming and manual process for most agencies. This results in more accurate, current, and consistent schedule information for the customer.

The TimeTablePublisher is designed to use data directly in the Google Transit Feed Spec (GTFS) format, so it can be very easy for an agency to implement. In addition, it can connect to, and read from, other sources of data including a database, a comma separated text file, and XML. An easy-to-use interface, as well as a tool that compares the changes between two service dates, makes it easy to format and edit the data.

The State of Transit Routing - O'Reilly Radar
What's also interesting is the potential of these routing tools beyond actual specific individual routes. Taken in amalgamation the routing distances form a new topography of the space. Given a point in the city, how far can I travel in 20 minutes? in 40 minutes? for less than $1.75? This type of map is known as an isochrone. Tom Carden and MySociety developed London Travel Time Maps that allow users to highlight the spots in London given a range of house prices and travel times.

Jet Set, Meet the Bus Bunch - NYTimes.com
Daniel Kwon, 22, a student from Berlin, said he had heard about BoltBus from his brother: “He said it was actually cleaner than the other buses. Not only does it have Wi-Fi, it arrives on time. I am German,” he said, with a laugh, “so I believe transportation should be punctual.”

Mr. Kwon’s brother was right about most things: the BoltBus was indeed spotless, including the rest room, and it did have Wi-Fi. Nevertheless, there was one problem: the BoltBus arrived in Washington 30 minutes late.

Development of a Methodology to Measure Mobility in Urban Transportation Corridors
The objective of this study is to develop a methodology to measure mobility in urban transportation corridors to support project level decision making. Transportation agencies struggle with measuring mobility, and measures are very seldom multimodal. Both VTrans 2025 and VDOT’s FY08 Business Plan stress the importance of multimodal mobility measures, yet measures developed by VDOT to date are for automobile travel and do not include other modes (e.g., transit, pedestrians, or bicycles). The proposed research will first measure the mobility choices that are currently available in a particular corridor; i.e., it will identify the potential in the corridor for multimodal mobility. This can then serve as a baseline for further analysis and for the identification of ways to increase multimodal mobility in the corridor. The project’s scope will be limited to the mobility of people in an urban corridor rather than freight.

Welcome to IEEE Xplore 2.0: Prediction of Transit Vehicle Arrival Time for Signal Priority Control: Algorithm and Performance
We develop an algorithm for predicting the arrival times of a transit vehicle at signalized intersections, with a focus on meeting the accuracy requirement associated with signal priority control applications. The algorithm uses both historical and real-time Global Positioning System (GPS) vehicle location data. There are no data from other detectors, such as loops or cameras. The arrival time prediction is formulated as an optimal a posteriori parameter estimation problem, where the model is consisted of a historical model and an adaptive model that adaptively adjusts its filter gain based on real-time data. The estimates generated by these two models are fused in a weighted average derived from the solution of the parameter estimation problem. The prediction algorithm adaptively adjusts its weight distribution using error variances obtained from the two models.

AATA Gillig Hybrid Electric Bus - Green Public Transportation - Automobile Magazine
When a Route 6 hybrid bus heading southeast toward AATA headquarters whirred to a stop at the Blake terminal, I flashed my student ID (in lieu of paying the $1 fare) to join a dozen other riders enjoying mass transit at its finest. The blue, gray, and white seating area was spotlessly clean. The air-conditioner's cool breeze kept the bus's interior free of diesel noise and odor. Regular riders smile when one of the hybrids appears at their stop, because these buses are smoother, quieter, and cleaner than their diesel-only counterparts.

MSU Biking Goes Global and Green
For starters, Potter can credit bicycling for leading him to his wife, Hiromi, the daughter of Japanese bike racing champ Seiichi Nishiji. More recently, Potter’s dedication brought him the opportunity to manage an innovative new program spinning around Michigan State University in East Lansing. MSU Bikes is a university-sponsored program that simultaneously encourages bike use and supports the biking community, all while helping to clean up the campus. The program was originally conceived as a way to encourage university faculty and employees to do a little more biking and a little less driving. Under Potter's direction, MSU Bikes picks the best bikes out of the crop of bikes regularly abandoned and cleared from the racks around campus, cleans them up and gets them back on the road.

Kalamazoo Manufacturing Company
The Kalamazoo Railroad Velocipede and Car Company was founded in 1883 by George Miller and Horace Haines in Kalamazoo, Michigan with a capital stock of forty-five thousand dollars. The factory at Pitcher Street in downtown Kalamazoo was located next to the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad (GR&I) and was described as "located admirably for its purposes". By 1901 the company name had changed to the Kalamazoo Railway Supply Company. It manufactured hand and push cars, motor inspection cars, velocipedes, jacks, tanks and fixtures, stand pipes and other products needed for railroad work. The company moved to a larger factory on Reed Street (also next to the GR&I), that still stands today. A postcard of the Reed Street factory in its early days is shown upper left.

My life is better, not worse, without a car - Telegraph
Roughly speaking, he explains, of all the car journeys we make, around 40 per cent are easy to avoid, another 40 per cent difficult and another 20 per cent - well, you kind of do need a car. Wiping out the "easy" 40 per cent would still transform the way we travel in this country.

Would that, paradoxically, tempt more people back on the roads? Quite possibly, if fuel prices start to fall - particularly as no real effort is being made to lock in changes in travelling habits. Rethinking rail fares would help - the current system pegs price rises to inflation, and on top of that, train companies have been sneakily scrapping off-peak fares. More investment in infrastructure for rail freight - often cheaper than building and maintaining roads - is also needed.

Aug. 2, 1873: San Francisco's First Cable Car Conquers Nob Hill
1873: Andrew Hallidie tests the first cable car in San Francisco.
Hallidie is said to have conceived his idea in 1869 while watching a team of horses being whipped as they struggled to pull a car up wet cobblestones on Nob Hill. They slipped and were dragged to their deaths.
It so happened that Hallidie's father held the British patent for wire-rope cable, and when the son came to the Gold Rush fields he put it to use hauling ore-laden cars from mines. So it wasn't too much of a stretch for him to envision horseless cable cars carrying passengers up the steep slopes of San Francisco's hills.

Environmental Capital - WSJ.com : Oil Shock: Analyst Predicts $7 Gas, "Mass Exodus" of U.S. Cars
who will be parking their cars? The 57 million American households that have both cars and access to something resembling public transit. Gasoline at $7 begins to approach prices Europeans have paid for years, meaning that chunk of America “will start to act more and more like Europeans,” Mr. Rubin says. Not soccer moms in a minivan—soccer fans, searching for tokens:

Our analysis suggests that about half of the number of cars coming off the road in the next four years will be from low income households who have access to public transit. At their current driving habits, filling up the tank will have risen from about 7% of their income to 20%, an increase that will see many start taking the bus.
