The Social Customer Manifesto: Is "Community" a Lie?
"Create the ability for community members to communicate as they want to. Brand managers and most companies want to control the conversation. If your users are truly part of the community, they will do nothing to hurt and/or destroy the community in which they live.

Crisis Communications Online: Social Media Usage during a Crisis with Leysia Palen - PR Podcast / On the Record...Online PR Podcast
Crisis communications used to be the handled exclusively through official channels like press releases, spokespeople and media relations. But today, through the power of socially distributed problem-solving, a first draft of history more nuanced and accurate than ever before is emerging from social media, and increasingly, people are turning to unofficial sources first, particularly in times of crisis.

In this episode, social media crisis communications researcher at the ConnectivIT Lab at the University of Colorado at Boulder Leysia Palen shares what she has learned about social media usage during a crisis, assessing the credibility of citizen journalism and user generated media during a crisis, and how organizations might align with unofficial back channels in the future.

Social media success doesn’t start with ROI
“What’s the ROI of your receptionist? What’s the ROI of your parking? What’s the ROI of the paint on the walls? What’s the ROI of the landscapers,” said Scott as he continued on his ‘I hate the ROI-obsessed business culture’ rant. “The idea that everything has to come back to a measurable ROI is ludicrous. ”

AltSearchEngines " Blog Archive " How to Search for Influencers with Datanetis
From Datanetis’s experience, social network marketing using influencers is comprised of two cycles. The first is the closed friends cycle, from the results it seems as if they almost decide simultaneously to follow the leader. This first wave peaks around 4-5 weeks from the beginning of the campaign. The second wave peaks around 9-10 weeks traversing through the rest of the social sphere. This may indicate that the customers are going through different decision making processes at different locations on the social network graph (influencers affinity). This knowledge offers Datanetis customers ways to fine tune their campaigns over time.

Introducing the Media Socialists… at theory.isthereason
Possibly the most overdue plug I ever had to make, I’d like to introduce you to a consortium of bloggers which I’ve had pleasure of being part of. Birds of a feather to flock together, and in this case, it’s the meetups, conferences and online conversations we’ve shared through our blogs that has brought us here. Together, we aim to help our various Singaporean agencies participate in social media, both in the cultural and technical sense. This is all in hopes of building active citizenry, highly responsive organizations and ultimately, a socially responsible and transparent way of life in Singapore.

Give List
Times are tight. We know, we know. We've all seen the scary headlines. Too many of the scary headlines. And we're all feeling the pressure in other ways too.
But, still, we want to contribute what we can to making the world the better place.
The GiveList gives you ideas and inspiration for just that: ways that you contribute without spending or buying. Or maybe giving while buying and spending a little less than usual.

Tracking social networks with Google Analytics using filters | Advanced Web Metrics
The result is a report that aggregates all visits from your social network in a similar way to how organic visitors or Google AdWords visitors are automatically aggregated by default. It provides an at-a-glance view to ascertain the importance/activity of social networks to you. In this case, visits from social networks are clearly important - the third most important medium accounting for 17.65% of visits to this site. Without the filter, that would be difficult to ascertain, requiring the manual identification and counting of each social network referral. As always, you gain further detail by clicking the report link.

Motorola, could you please tell your viral marketer to get out of our comments? - Boing Boing Gadgets
"Follow the money," they say, but in this case we don't have to, because all we have to do is follow the link. Motorola, if you could be so kind as to tell your viral marketer to fuck right off we'd sure appreciate it. Perhaps you could spend the money instead on making your phones something that people actually want to buy.

How Will Your Nonprofit Raise Money in 2012? - Social Actions
Donors of all ages will be looking for meaningful points of engagement with your organization. They'll want to set the programmatic agenda, select the beneficiaries and target areas, communicate the organization's message, and, in real-time, evaluate feedback as it comes in.

Notice something strange about those tasks? None of them involve passive check-writing on behalf of your organization. In 2012, individuals will come to your organization with the expectation of being full partners in your work, not just dollar wells to be tapped when cash is needed. Donations will be a consequence of meaningful engagement, not a measurement of it.

The Bamboo Project Blog: Will Social Media Help Your Boss Micromanage You?
That said, what I think MAY start to be a problem is micromanagement via social media. In fact, if it hasn't happened already, it's only a matter of time before some web savvy boss figures out that by following you on Twitter he can see if you're actually working or if you're tweeting about what you want to eat for lunch and the awesome mojitos you had at that bar last night. He'll be watching your status on Facebook and monitoring your FriendFeed to see what you're posting and when. I can hear the conversations now: "Was that an article you tagged in Delicious at 10:45 when you were supposedly in an important meeting? I think I've spoken to you before about this 'multi-tasking' you do and how I don't like it."

On whuffie, social capital, and social climbing — CECILY.info
I don’t know if this is a factor of my rapidly advancing age and my increasing inability to suffer what I consider to be foolish behavior gladly, but this isn’t the social community I want to be a part of. I want to be part of a community where people are willing to share their expertise so that we all get better. I want to be part of a community that mimics that hoary old cliche about rising tides that lift all boats. I think this is why, now that I’m working in a library, I feel I’m finally surrounded by people who understand the benefit of the collective we, and how our societies — physical and virtual — are made stronger by nurturing a commonwealth of ideas where those who have access feel a sense of responsibility to those who don’t.

Technology Review: How Obama Really Did It
Of course, many of the 2008 candidates had websites, click-to-donate tools, and social-networking features--even John McCain, who does not personally use e-mail. But the Obama team put such technologies at the center of its campaign--among other things, recruiting 24-year-old Chris Hughes, cofounder of Facebook, to help develop them. And it managed those tools well. Supporters had considerable discretion to use MyBO to organize on their own; the campaign did not micromanage but struck a balance between top-down control and anarchy. In short, Obama, the former Chicago community organizer, created the ultimate online political machine.

The Marketing Consortium
3) Blogs should deliver a return on investment Again, unless you are writing a blog for pure enjoyment, you need to consider the blog a marketing investment and it needs to have a measurable purpose. Now, I don’t mean to imply that unless you can tie your blog to immediate ROI in a short period of time, it’s a bust. But because blogs are not free, you need to have a goal, you need to measure against that goal, and you need to figure out what you will do if you aren’t meeting that goal over some reasonable time period. Some companies measure blogs by traffic, some by conversions, some by increased awareness and some by the blog’s effect on natural search engine results.

The Marketing Consortium : Another Rant On Social Media Metrics
If there's one phrase I could forever eliminate from the marketing handbook, it would be "What's the ROI on Social Media?" The question is completely inane, and belies a lack of meaningful understanding about metrics and performance measurement. It's a clear sign of a marketer who has embraced the language of accountability, with little understanding of the mechanics. You get the sense that because there's no prettily packaged Social Media Dashboard ready to bubble up impressive graphs for the CEO, marketers are adrift without a paddle.
