~ Akoha - Come Play it Forward
july 2009 by vielmetti
We’re very pleased to announce that we’ve completely sold-out of our initial print run of VIP Starter Decks. Many thanks to all our players for making the first edition of the VIP Starter Kit such a success.
Based on feedback from the community we’ve taken this opportunity to improve the original VIP Starter Deck.
Along with being much shinier and easier to read we’ve added more of your favourite missions (”Thanks Someone”, “Make Someone Smile” and “Give Someone a Surprise Gift” and removed a couple of missions that weren’t getting as much love (”Send Drinks to a Couple in Love” and “Give a Compact Florescent Bulb”).

Science for SEO: "A few Chirps about twitter"
january 2009 by vielmetti
"A few Chirps about twitter" gives valuable insight into how we use the application and why we use it.
It is a paper written by Balachander krishnamurthy (AT&T Labs), Phillipa Gill (Uni Calgary) and Martin Arlitt (HP Labs - Uni Calgary)
"Our goal is to characterize a novel communication network in depth, its user base and geographical spread, and compare results of different crawling techniques in the presence of constraints from a generic measurement point of view".

» The Art of Memetics: Pirate Edition
november 2008 by vielmetti
We are all part of social networks that are communicating, interacting. And this allows us to start applying cybernetic principles to psychological and social issues. Memes are not about “communication” or transfer of data. Memes are programming instructions. They are tied to actions. Memes are just the packet on this network. And the packets are usually programs which get installed on the system that accepts them. That system is you and I. Because we are components in a very large system and made up of smaller systems and components the percentage of control we are generally capable of at least at first is really small because we are constrained both by our constituting components and the system of interactions within which we are embedded.

Upcoming’s disastrous switch from personal-social to general-social « Rashmi’s blog
october 2008 by vielmetti
For me the best part of Upcoming was being able to see what events my friends are going to. With their redesign, Upcoming decided to hide that behind two clicks. Now when you go to the site, I see whats popular in San Francisco, but I have to click to see what my friends are upto. Even on an events page, I can no longer easily see if any of my friends are going there. Instead I am shown the groups and tags. But I have to click to see who is attending.

iamelgringo: Mechanical Turk: Now with 25 percent more Awesome.
september 2008 by vielmetti
had a list of over 6000 business names, addresses and url's of dubious quality that I needed to make sure was accurate. For a brief moment, I thought about checking them myself. But after doing several dozen by hand, I realized that I was violating the principle of Don't Be Silly(TM). So I was stuck. Either I could use half baked data as is or shelve the project entirely. Enter Mechanical Turk, and the hoards of awesomeness to save the day. I'd heard about Mechanical Turk several years ago, and I had been dying to use it. But, I never quite found 12,000 itches that I really needed to be scratched.

Technology Review: How Obama Really Did It
august 2008 by vielmetti
Of course, many of the 2008 candidates had websites, click-to-donate tools, and social-networking features--even John McCain, who does not personally use e-mail. But the Obama team put such technologies at the center of its campaign--among other things, recruiting 24-year-old Chris Hughes, cofounder of Facebook, to help develop them. And it managed those tools well. Supporters had considerable discretion to use MyBO to organize on their own; the campaign did not micromanage but struck a balance between top-down control and anarchy. In short, Obama, the former Chicago community organizer, created the ultimate online political machine.

Introduction to Social Network Methods: Table of Contents
august 2008 by vielmetti
This on-line textbook introduces many of the basics of formal approaches to the analysis of social networks. The text relies heavily on the work of Freeman, Borgatti, and Everett (the authors of the UCINET software package). The materials here, and their organization, were also very strongly influenced by the text of Wasserman and Faust, and by a graduate seminar conducted by Professor Phillip Bonacich at UCLA. Many other users have also made very helpful comments and suggestions based on the first version. Errors and omissions, of course, are the responsibility of the authors.

Video of Jay Rosen talking about "thousands of reporters on one story"
august 2008 by vielmetti
It's a lot easier to have the concept that your readers know more than you do than it is to actually put that into practice. There is no formula for doing it yet, can't point to someone who uses social network reporting to do their beat every day. In most news rooms, reporters are under a great deal of pressure to produce more than ever.
