Power outage maps for all 50 states plus as many other countries as I can find - Vacuum
By state, alphabetically, as of June 16, 2011; 42/50 states have something here. The list is known to be incomplete, but the other incomplete list from Wikipedia (outage management system) is also stale. To be overly comprehensive, if there are screen captures that I can gather, I will; they will not be current when you look at them. Wherever possible, I'm also capturing service area or service territory maps.

N.Y. Deputy Mayor Goldsmith Learns City Operations the Hard Way - NYTimes.com
On Monday, most New Yorkers will get their first look at the still obscure deputy mayor, when he is called before the City Council to explain what went wrong during the blizzard. But some current and former city officials are already suggesting that Mr. Goldsmith, who was the mayor of Indianapolis in the 1990s and until last year had never lived or worked in New York, is the wrong man for his high-pressure position. His immediate predecessor, Edward Skyler, was so maniacal about making the city work he was called “Batman” and once tackled a would-be mugger in Midtown Manhattan.

Bloomberg v. Blizzard: How Strong Is the Mayor's Defense? - NYTimes.com
“Snow is to a mayor as foreign policy is to a president,” Mitchell L. Moss, the director of the Taub Urban Research Center at New York University, told The Times in 1996, suggesting that the storm had been a boon for Mr. Giuliani. “You have a monopoly on it, so you have to go out and handle it. So you leave City Hall and go to all five boroughs, and you can look terrific fighting the snow.”

Bloomberg Takes Blame for City’s Response to Storm - NYTimes.com
The mayor also spread some of the blame for the city’s problems on to its citizens, who he said had failed to heed requests that they not call for help unless they faced true emergencies. Those calls, the mayor said, “overwhelmed” the emergency communications system, a failure that he said he had assigned an official to investigate. City residents also compounded the problem by trying to drive in the storm, only to have their cars stuck in the path of plows.

Seattle Snowpocalypse
It is at this point that I must admit that I didn't dream up this amazing technique. It pains me to admit this not because my ego suffers, but because the zip-tie-DIY-bicycle-snow-chains idea appears to have originated with my favorite bicycle industry whipping boy: fixed gear hipster culture. Several years ago, I'm sure, some bright child with extremely tight pants and an asymmetrical haircut had a genius-caliber idea, and I hate that it wasn't me.

Automated snow mapping system
The automated snow mapping system is based on a synergy of GOES-Imager, NOAA-AVHRR and DMSP-SSM/I data and produces daily snow cover maps for the North American continent. The original map is prepared in a Platte Carre (lat-lon) projection with a 1/25 of a degree grid size.

NIC IMS Home Page
The National Ice Center (NIC), a tri-agency operational center, operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States Navy, and the United States Coast Guard, prepares a daily Northern Hemisphere Snow and Ice chart. This chart, prepared on a polar stereographic projection is centered on the North Pole with a 60 degree latitude of true scale, provides information on the areal coverage of the snow and ice. The visible and Near-infrared imagery of the polar orbiting satellites (POES) and geostationary orbiting environmental satellites (GOES) are the primary tools for the analysis of this snow and ice cover. Low resolution visible data are augmented whenever possible by the visible high resolution imagery and visible GOES, GMS, MTSAT, and METEOSAT data. In addition, ground weather observations, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), microwave scatterometer returns, weather prediction, sea ice models, buoys, flights, and DMSP visible and microwave products

Heikinpäivä Mid-Winter Festival: Hancock Michigan
Finnish speaking residents of the CopperIn 1999, the Finnish Theme Committee of the City of Hancock created a new Finnish-American celebration - Heikinpäivä. The celebration’s themes are taken from Finnish folk saying associated with the name day for Heikki (Henrik’s day, 19 January).
Country still recall the proverbs their parents and grandparents brought with them from Finland. In particular, the weather proverbs connected with St. Henrik's Day have been retained in the Hancock area, where huge amounts of winter snow are the norm. “Karhu kylkeänsä kääntää” (The bear rolls onto his other side), “Heikki heinät jakaa” (Heikki divides the hay) and ultimately, “Talven selkä poikki” (winter’s back is broken). The bear - an ancient Finnish and Saame symbol -- figures well in the celebration, as do Saame and winter sports themes.

To make the snow come down
And I’ll do my snow dance

I’ll holler and yell,

My World #8: Back at home, but there’s still snow
You can’t really tell from this photo, but when I took this picture of the sun, it was snowing. I was ready to head out the door to work, and just stopped long enough to take this on the run. I had never seen sunshine and snow at the same time. It’s very pretty, but pretty eerie at the same time.

Heikki Lunta - One of Heikinpäivä's namesakes
The unusually mild and snowless December the Copper Country of Michigan is experiencing this year, is reminiscent of a similar winter in 1970. That year it took the extraordinary efforts of the mythical character, Heikki Lunta to remedy the situation.
