When Zion Ruled the Airwaves [longform.org]
A dot on the map midway between Waukegan and Kenosha, the lakeside Illinois town of Zion doesn't make the news much these days, but throughout the first third of the 20th century it was nationally famous--"notorious" may be a better word. Zion's celebrity peaked between 1923 and 1928, when the town was home to WCBD, one of the most popular radio stations in the pioneering age of American broadcasting.

As soon as I got home I ordered one. I found mine for $15.99 and free shipping on eBay.

Since then I've written custom firmware to turn my IM-Me into a pocket spectrum analyzer, shown here displaying activity of a frequency hopping system at a grocery store.

Open Source » Blog Archive » Cass Sunstein: for the Homer Simpson in all of us
Cass Sunstein is himself a demonstration of the spread of the new thinking from psychology and economics to law and politics. From the University of Chicago Law School, where he taught alongside Barack Obama for a dozen years, he has just moved permanently to Harvard, where he and Obama seem still to be channeling each other. Sunstein’s new book Nudge, with the economist Richard Thaler, is an introduction to a variety of not-quite-coercive strategies for helping people get what they really want: 401k savings plans, for example, that would be automatic for all workers who didn’t choose to set some of their wages aside. The general trick, Sunstein says, is recognizing that there’s less Immanuel Kant, more Homer Simpson, in each and all us than we’ve been taught.

Pandora can't make money, may pull the plug
There's no doubt that SoundExchange has been strong-arming the Internet radio industry into oblivion. But most Internet radio stations like Pandora offer their services for free, or they offer accounts with more features at incredibly cheap prices. While some stations display ads on their website, Pandora hasn't done itself any favors by offering desktop clients and a wildly popular iPhone application (iTunes link) that rake in millions of users without so much as a single ad. Perhaps, for now, the "just build it and we'll figure out the business model later" approach won't be enough to save this experiment in new media.

Antique Radio Classified--Restoration Topics
My grandfather was a remarkable man who was fascinated by technology and built all kinds of electronic and mechanical gadgetry during his lifetime. He started working on electronic home projects in an era when components were only just becoming available to hobbyists. Among other things, he built electronic musical instruments, radios, and even a TV, around which all the neighbors gathered to watch some of the first BBC broadcasts from the Crystal Palace in London where he lived. In the late 1940s, he built an electronic wire recorder. Tape recording had not yet been introduced commercially and steel wire, thinner than a human hair, was the only medium available for making audio recordings. Although by this time wire recorders were being introduced to the domestic market in America, in Britain they were still a rarity, confined mainly to the military and to offices where they were used as dictaphones.
