Slashdot | Home Generators (or How DTE Energy Ruined My Holidays)
january 2009 by vielmetti
We are among the thousands without power in the northeast. Day four actually, and we've decided to look into generators so that next year's New Year's doesn't involve fears of frozen pipes bursting and hypothermic babies and cats. At the very least we just need enough juice to run the furnace blower, but if we're going to lay down the cash I'd like to know what it would take to get a little more power ... like enough to run a fridge, router, laptop and lightbulb. I know nothing about this sort of thing, but figure there are more than a few experts out there so I call out to the wisdom of the mob. What am I looking for? How difficult is the wiring? What will it cost me? On the extreme edge, what would it take to get off the grid entirely? (And on a side note, thanks to DTE Energy for telling us we had power when we didn't, for losing the ticket for our neighborhood, for telling us it would be back every single day when it wasn't,

Michigan Messenger » As Wayne County freezes, emergency officials pass the buck
december 2008 by vielmetti
As thousands struggled to cope with freezing temperatures during widespread power outages this week, emergency management personnel and equipment — including generators — remained idle in Wayne County as vacationing officials passed the buck on responding to the weather emergency.
“I’m sure there are plans [for dealing with winter power outages],” said the lone employee in the Wayne County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management on Monday, “but I haven’t been here that long, and I really do not know what they are.”

Google to Push for More Electrical Efficiency in PC’s - New York Times
december 2008 by vielmetti
“We now have 70 compliant designs from 15 to 20 manufacturers,” said the adviser, Chris Calwell, vice president and director for policy and research at Ecos Consulting. The new designs are just becoming available in commercial products, he said.
Modern PC designs shift the control of voltage to the motherboards, making the multiple voltage requirements of industry standard power supplies unnecessary, wrote Urs Hölzle and William Weihl, the authors of the Google paper, “High-Efficiency Power Supplies for Home Computers and Servers.”
Google executives said Monday that they were not familiar with the existing effort. They said the project was complementary with their plan and that they were trying to start an industry discussion of the issue.

More than 828,000 Entergy customers were without power following Gustav, placing it among the most-damaging weather events as measured by power outages in the utility’s 95-year history, second only to Katrina, which left 1.1 million Entergy customers in the dark.

Lessons from the Cincinnati Power Outage : PaulTech Network
september 2008 by vielmetti
As the day turned into night, an eerie scene emerged. The stillness of the night was incredible. It was dark, quiet, and serene. It really did remind me of alien invasion scenes. Or maybe after a tremendous catastrophe. As I walked around the neighborhood, an even more stark scene came to forefront. People were outside again. They were hanging out with neighbors. They were grilling out together. They were sharing beer, wine, food, and fires. I discovered that there were a lot more teenagers in my neighborhood than I could have imagined.

LSU column: Shedding light on a dark week in Baton Rouge | thenewsstar.com | The News Star
september 2008 by vielmetti
Perhaps not since there was no power have there been so many without power in Baton Rouge. The city has not been this dark since Curley Hallman was coaching the Tigers. You haven’t seen dark until you’ve seen power-out dark. It’s Legend of Boggy Creek dark. You know it’s dark when you miss a major intersection not because you thought it was another intersection, but because you didn’t see it. Government Street and Jefferson Highway is a pretty big intersection to be invisible. A dark neighborhood can be scary. The consistent presence of Baton Rouge Police and other authorities comforts. So does the constant roar of nearby generators for those without one.

Network Weaving: Weaving the Electric Grid
august 2008 by vielmetti
Above is a network map of a portion of the US electric grid. Life is great if you live in one of the densely connected clusters using electricity generated nearby. Things start to get real complicated if energy needs to transferred from one cluster to another cluster in grid. Distance destroys. Electricity does not flow like information or water or oil. It is not easy to direct, and much electricity is lost to heat when transferred over long distances. On the internet, 100 packets sent from Cleveland all arrive in New York wholly intact -- not so with a 100 MW of electricity generated in Cleveland and sold to NY. Even more electricity would be lost going to Miami, and forget about LA. It makes no sense to transfer electricity made in Cleveland to Los Angeles -- most of it would be lost during the trip.
