The Commons is not just one of the finest achievements on Flickr, it’s a shining example of just how great the web can be. If the project dies because of the idiotic actions of some short-sighted bean counters at Yahoo, it will be a great loss for you, me and our culture.

Eugene de Salignac, October 7, 1914 - A Photography Blog.

On September 22, 1914, he photographed a group of painters at work on its lower trusses. He must have had a spark of inspiration that day; two weeks later he returned and posed the men on the web of wires like notes on a musical scale, the result of which can be seen in this photograph. The image was obviously planned, as evidenced by the relaxed nature of these fearless men who appear without their equipment and are joined, uncustomarily, by their supervisor. No vintage print of this iconic photo-the most famous of de Salignac's images-is known to exist."

Voelker's Pond: A Robert Traver Legacy - By James McCullough, Photography by Ed Wargin

The summer of 2003 marked John Voelker's 100th birthday. Some knew him as Michigan judge John Voelker, some knew him as best-selling writer (pen name Robert Traver). Still others, like Charles Kuralt, called him "the closest thing to a great man [he] ever met." Writer James McCullough's narration begins with a poignant flashback from his boyhood some twenty-six years ago, when he met Voelker for the first time. The photos that follow are unprecedented. While millions are familiar with Voelker's woodland retreat through his words, never before has anyone captured not only the cabin, the pond, and the environment, but also his rods, his flies and the small nuances that define the man.
