Preserving Your Collection of Film-Based Photographic Negatives
The problem presented in the title of this paper can be addressed simply by two words: cold storage. Recent research indicates that all cellulose-based film, whether it's a cellulose nitrate negative from the 1890's or a cellulose triacetate color transparency from the 1990's, share very similar deterioration mechanisms that are temperature and humidity dependent. On balance, relative humidity has been shown to be a less serious concern at low temperatures. What this means for a collections manager is that long term preservation of a collection of film-based negatives is as affordable as a frost-free freezer.

Bentley Historical Library Finding Aids
The Ivory Photo collection consists of an impressive array of negatives and prints taken by Ann Arbor photographer Mel Ivory from the 1920s to the early 1970s. Most of the photographs were taken by Ivory for customers, whether the University of Michigan, local businesses, or private citizens. The collection is probably most valuable for its extensive documentation of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan, the two areas in which it bulks largest. However, because it spans a relatively long time period, the collection is also useful for illustrating changes in photography as an art and as a business, and for documenting social trends in twentieth-century America. Finally, the collection documents the career of a commercial photographer.

BLDGBLOG: In the winter of light
How amazing it would be to find that architectural styles begin to change – moving away from the Clement Greenberg-like flatness of international modernism toward a new era of ornamentally active deep surfaces – if something as simple as when photographs are taken were to change.
All the works of Frank Gehry, photographed in the anemic, angular light of midwinter. I sense a book idea here, if any enterprising photographers might be reading this...

Detroit through two lenses: Snapshots 50 years apart | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Photographer Robert Frank immortalized them in "The Americans," a picture book of poetry and masterpiece of modern photography that changed the way we look at ourselves. Its main character: Detroit.

In creating "The Americans," Frank snapped 28,000 shots from 1955 to 1956 over the course of three road trips across the United States. The genius lay in editing the photographs down into 83 daggers, which he plunged into the heart of the Ozzie and Harriet myth of the 1950s.

Relish :: Gallery Project: Step Right Up! // Ann Arbor, Exhibition, Gallery Project, Mary Morgan, Portraits, The Ruiners
I took a break from working on orders yesterday to join Mary Morgan in visiting the Gallery Project space on S. Fourth Ave., where artists are in the process of installing their pieces for a new show that starts tomorrow, December 10. I don’t normally cover (non-performing) art, but this exhibit is just so cool I couldn’t resist.

RED / Cameras
Typical high-end HD camcorders have 2.1M pixel sensors and record with 3:1:1 color sub-sampled video at up to 30fps. RED offers the Mysterium ™ Super 35mm cine sized (24.4×13.7mm) sensor, which provides 4K (up to 30 fps), 3K (up to 60 fps) and 2K (up to 120 fps) capture, and all this with wide dynamic range and color space in 12 bit native RAW. At 4K, that’s more than 5 times the amount of information available every second and a vastly superior recording quality. In addition, you get the same breathtaking Depth of Field and selective focus as found in film cameras using equivalent 35mm P/L mount lenses. Mysterium ™ boasts greater than 66db Dynamic Range thanks to its large 29 sq. micron pixels. And 12,065,000 pixels deliver resolution that can only be called Ultra High Definition.

The Cumberland News
Cumbria features prominently among the photos in the collection. After Francis’s death his sons and grandsons continued the work of chronicling British towns and villages, so the images range in time from the late 19th century, when Francis started, to the second half of the 20th century, when his grandson finished the task. And this range of several decades therefore shows how many familiar places changed over time. They allow us, for example, to see Penrith’s market place as it looked in 1893 and contrast it with a picture of the town centre taken in 1955. The photographs are often quite important historical records, as spokeswoman for the collection Julia Skinner pointed out. “Workington bus station on Murray Road was the first purpose-built covered bus station in the country,” she said. “It has been extended over time, but the core building is still there.

Macrophotography on the cheap
Something that I have just gotten to work is a processing technique called “Extended Depth of Field”. The idea is that you take a series of pictures focusing on different levels of your specimen, and then use “wavelet processing” to sort out the bits of each picture that are in focus and use them to assemble a finished picture where everything is in focus simultaneously.

Grandfather Beech and the celebration of trees « Michigan in Pictures
the above photos are by Betsy Lewis , whose work is featured at the Tahquamenon Area Library in Newberry. The Mining Journal has an article on the exhibit. They had planned around an arts grant from the state (which was cut), but they are still holding an amateur photo contest. It’s the 4th annual and the theme is Trees. You can get more information about the contest right here, but even if you don’t enter, consider what Betsy has to say about trees:

Our economy, our recreation, our lives are dependent on trees. They build our homes, provide fuel, jobs, clean the air, provide respite for us and are home to many creatures besides us. They provide roots, they are flexible, they bend, they break, they change. They surround us and uplift us and inspire us to reach for the sky.
