[0812.5087] Estimating Time-Varying Networks
january 2009 by vielmetti
(note: most sociology analysis uses static networks, and fails miserably on nets that change over time as all do. here's some plausible start)
Abstract: Stochastic networks are a plausible representation of the relational information among entities in dynamic systems such as living cells or social communities. While there is a rich literature in estimating a static or temporally invariant network from observation data, little has been done towards estimating time-varying networks from time series of entity attributes. In this paper, we present two new machine learning methods for estimating time-varying networks, which both build on a temporally smoothed $l_1$-regularized logistic regression formalism that can be cast as standard convex-optimization problem and solved efficiently using generic solvers scalable to large networks. We report promising results on recovering simulated time-varying networks.

Referential communication in AUTONOTE, a personal information retrieval system
december 2008 by vielmetti
This paper is concerned with the mechanisms of human intelligence and natural language communication, and with the design of an interactive computer program that incorporates and utilizes analogous mechanisms to improve man-machine communication. AUTONOTE2 is an improved personal information retrieval system. It includes, in addition to AUTONOTE (a presently running system), (1) mechanisms allowing the user to employ certain kinds of noun phrases to describe the items he wishes to store and retrieve; and (2) mechanisms enabling the system to maintain a map of what the user is referring to. Though extremely limited by comparison with the analogous human capabilities, these mechanisms add significantly to the descriptive power available to the user, and to the ease and efficiency of communication with the system. Furthermore, because AUTONOTE is a file oriented system, these additions add little to the present low cost of using the system

PocketMod: The Free Recyclable Personal Organizer
december 2008 by vielmetti
The PocketMod is a new way to keep yourself organized. Lets face it, PDAs are too expensive and cumbersome, and organizers are bulky and hard to carry around. Nothing beats a folded up piece of paper. That is until now. With the PocketMod, you can carry around the days notes, keep them organized in any way you wish, then easily transfer the notes to your PDA, spreadsheet, or planner.

So what exactly do I do? I am Paper Girl. I collect very simple and basic public documents from cities, special districts, schools, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (we have San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station here) and nonprofits - stuff like contracts, tax returns, audits, expense reports, financial disclosure forms, inspection reports - and I write a story about what I find five or six days a week.

The Turkish Map Fold
november 2008 by vielmetti
As the name suggests, the Turkish Map Fold is a way to fold a map. Generally speaking, we fold maps to make them easier to store and carry. This particular method is interesting because when you grasp the two edges and pull it open, the entire surface of the map comes into view in a way that resembles a blooming flower. And when you push the edges back together, it refolds itself to the way it was. The photo above shows an example of an artist's book constructed from a number of squares of paper folded in this manner, all joined together with adhesive.

A “Presentation Layer” at Bench Press
october 2008 by vielmetti
Cameron Neylon wrote a great post about the difference between recording and presenting data in an online lab notebook. The whole post provides a great analysis of the differences he sees between LaBLog, the UsefulChem wiki and the basic philosophies behind their use.
The end of Cameron’s post really got me thinking about the possibilities that a “presentation layer” could have in an online lab notebook. I envision a presentation layer that leverages recent innovations in webapp technology to automatically generate a flowchart-like view of all posts/data/experiments contained within one’s notebook. This graphic would be interactive, customizable, and could be coupled with methodology excerpts in order to provide a complete view of experiments over time.

PocketMaps - paper maps of dynamic data :: mapufacture blog
august 2008 by vielmetti
The result are PocketMaps. Just like normal PocketMods, but each item in a map or KML file show up as page with a marker and map showing the location. If the place has a photo from a sharing site like Flickr then the image will be brought in as well. You can even optionally have simple map of the place, or include overview, or zoomed out, maps of the area to help you find where it is in a large city.

[0712.2716] Community Structure in Graphs
august 2008 by vielmetti
Graph vertices are often organized into groups that seem to live fairly independently of the rest of the graph, with which they share but a few edges, whereas the relationships between group members are stronger, as shown by the large number of mutual connections. Such groups of vertices, or communities, can be considered as independent compartments of a graph. Detecting communities is of great importance in sociology, biology and computer science, disciplines where systems are often represented as graphs. The task is very hard, though, both conceptually, due to the ambiguity in the definition of community and in the discrimination of different partitions and practically, because algorithms must find ``good'' partitions among an exponentially large number of them. Other complications are represented by the possible occurrence of hierarchies, i.e. communities which are nested inside larger communities,

Bates' theory of berrypicking
september 2006 by vielmetti
search strategies that are not one-directional. (ed's theory of berrypicking: walk to the back and pick your way in)
First, a new model of searching in online and other information systems, called "berrypicking," is discussed. This model, it is argued, is much closer to the real behavior of information searchers than the traditional model of information retrieval is, and, consequently, will guide our thinking better in the design of effective interfaces. Second, the research literature of manual information seeking behavior is drawn on for suggestions of capabilities that users might like to have in online systems. Third, based on the new model and the research on information seeking, suggestions are made for how new search capabilities could be incorporated into the design of search interfaces. Particular attention is given to the nature and types of browsing that can be facilitated.
