The New “Freedom” | Front Porch Republic
You might even call it “utopic” in Thomas More’s wry sense: a seemingly good or perfect place which is really no place at all. Computers displace us. They displace us physically - they enable us to talk to anyone, anywhere, and so forth - but they also displace us emotionally and intellectually. They confuse and distract us.

sips (scriptable image processing system)
Interestingly, the man page for sips doesn't tell you about a lot of the syntax it recognizes. Probably most importantly it neglects to mention that "sips -h" and "sips -H" give much more information (and note that -h and -H give different help - you need both). You can flip images, rotate, change width and height, and much, much more.

P16: Practical Progress: Supercomputing for the masses: Nvidia CUDA
One thing CUDA doesn't provide is a way to manage and process massive datasets. The cards have somewhat limited memory, and you have to write an app that runs on the host and feeds the card with data. For search applications like topic clustering -- which I'd like to use this for -- CUDA alone doesn't provide an answer.

Perhaps it would make sense eventually to use Hadoop plus CUDA -- write your map/reduce tasks in CUDA, and rely on Hadoop to distribute data around a cluster of Nvidia-accelerated boxes?

AncientFS: Ancient Unix File Systems on Mac OS X
AncientFS is an open-source MacFUSE file system that will mount ancient Unix data containers in read-only mode, making their contents available as regular volumes on Mac OS X. Examples of "data containers" include file system disk images, tape images, incremental file system dumps, tape archives, and library archives. Once mounted, you can browse the volume in the Finder, of course, but the true flavor of ancient Unix data can only be had through the command line.

When you use AncientFS, even though you are mounting an ancient disk image on a modern day operating system, the mounted volume will preserve aspects of the original file system as far as possible. You will see the original inode numbers, file permissions, timestamps, block and character device numbers, and so on. Information on used/available inodes and disk blocks will also be correct when possible.

The Brain, v5 (beta) for Mac OS X
"I've tried to use The Brain on the Mac. Oh, I've tried. Because there really isn't another tool like it. And I love Harlan. But I just can't make the Mac version work for me. The UI / feature set has become really bloated, the Javaness of the app makes it really sluggish, I wish I could turn off about two-thirds of the features and just keep "the plex" as a lightweight way to that type of mapping."

Pukka: Del.icio.us Made Simple - Michael Mistretta
Then along came Pukka - the app that makes adding bookmarks to Del.icio.us so simple and seamless that you don’t even have to think about it. Pukka functions as a desktop interface to Del.icio.us. Simply opening Pukka will allow you to enter in a URL, name for the bookmark, tags, and even an optional description. A simple tap of the return key, and your bookmark will be added to Del.icio.us in the background. Still, I thought, it’s not easy enough to add bookmarks to Del.icio.us. Then, I discovered the Pukka bookmarklet.

Ask 37signals: How do you make screencast videos? - (37signals)
1. Write the script.
2. Record the voiceover in Logic Express and export as MP3. Logic Express is helpful for moving tracks around, evening out volume levels, compressing tracks, adding background music, etc. Leaving extra space at the beginning helps ensure you’re ready to shoot when the audio begins.
