The papers of James M. Ashley (1824-18%), radical Republican congressman and railroad executive from Toledo, consist of memoirs -written in the last year of his life, a few letters written to him by his son, Charles S. and a fragmentary political proposal. Ashley died before he could complete his memoirs and, although they ignore his later business career, they do discuss his youth, ideological development and political campaigns to 1886. Their value is enhanced by the absence of other Ashley papers, due to a fire at his home.

James Ashley - Ohio History Central - A product of the Ohio Historical Society
In 1869, President Ulysses Grant appointed Ashley governor of the Montana Territory. A majority of the people residing in Montana favored the Democratic Party and opposed Ashley's Radical Republican views. He served as governor for fifteen months and returned to Toledo after President Grant removed him from office. Ashley then became involved with railroad construction and helped to establish the Toledo, Ann Arbor & North Michigan Railroad. He ran for the United States House of Representatives in 1890 and 1892, but Ohioans refused to elect him in both elections. He died on September 16, 1896, in Alma, Michigan.

Outsourcing to Ohio « The Apostate
So this American-sounding person sounds smart and less annoying and picks up on my impatience and allows herself to be hurried through the list of offers. At the end, she asks, “Is there anything else I can help you with today?” And I say, “Yes, can you tell me if you’re American? I mean, you sound American, but it’s been so long since I’ve talked to someone who isn’t an Indian when I call in to my credit cards…” and she starts laughing. Says I’m the third person to ask her the question that month, and they all say the same thing about Indians. But yep, she’s in Ohio!

The Ann Arbor Chronicle » Meeting Watch: Greenbelt Advisory Commission (5 Nov 2008)
The first major item on the agenda was a presentation by Peg Kohring, Midwest director of The Conservation Fund, which manages the city’s greenbelt program. She gave a brief talk about the Cuyahoga Valley Countryside Conservancy, describing it as a think-and-do tank focused on local land use and food systems. Kohring said that she, city staffer Ginny Trocchio and Susan Lackey of the Washtenaw Land Trust made a trip to northeast Ohio to take an up-close look at this organization, and glean ideas that might be applicable to the Ann Arbor area.

Good v. Evil
That may have lead to a peaceful solution to the conflict were it not for the action of the Michigan on April 8. Monroe County authorities began arresting Ohio supporters in the Toledo strip. The chief Ohio patriot in the strip, Major Benjamin E. Stickney and his sons, One and Two, were the primary targets. Michigians broke into Stickney's house, arresting Dr. Naaman Goodsell and George McKey. Stickney's daughter was injured in the fracas. Then, on April 25, a team of Ohio surveyors(Uri Seely, Jonathon Taylor, and John Patterson), along with 50 militiamen were ambushed by a force of 1,000 Michigan militia acting under the Pains and Penalties Act. Most were simply driven past the Fulton line into definite Ohio territory and were not pursued further, but nine Ohio patriots barricaded themselves in a shack, attempting to maintain a foothold in the strip until a force of 500 militia redeployed by Governor Lucas could arrive. The Michigians shot at and arrested them though.

Lessons from the Cincinnati Power Outage : PaulTech Network
As the day turned into night, an eerie scene emerged. The stillness of the night was incredible. It was dark, quiet, and serene. It really did remind me of alien invasion scenes. Or maybe after a tremendous catastrophe. As I walked around the neighborhood, an even more stark scene came to forefront. People were outside again. They were hanging out with neighbors. They were grilling out together. They were sharing beer, wine, food, and fires. I discovered that there were a lot more teenagers in my neighborhood than I could have imagined.
