The Dirtbombs to release album of Detroit techno covers « Consequence of Sound
december 2010 by vielmetti
Detroit garage rockers The Dirtbombs know how to pay a little homage. They did so with 2001’s Ultraglide in Black, covering soul numbers from the ’60s and ’70s. The band’s new album Party Store goes a different direction, but the concept sounds promising enough: live renditions of ’80s and ’90s Detroit techno.

show me your hits: Columbia Records Invented the LP
december 2010 by vielmetti
I love giant businesses. I know that isn't a very "DIY" attitude, but most people who subscribe to the ole' DIY ethic are poor failures and that ain't me, babe. One of my favorite writers about business is Alfred Chandler and if you are ever looking to understand modern business corporations without being indoctrinated or terrified, Chandler is your guy. The fact is, enormous corporations exist because they get the job done. One of the great things about corporations in the context of capitalism, is that if they fail, they cease to exist. No one ever give Corporations credit for that quality. This is especially true as we move closer to the present day: Longetivity...is impressive.

electro-music is made with synthesizers, home-made circuits, computers, found objects, voices, signal processors, wooden flutes, ambient recordings, and virtually anything imaginable that makes sound - even conventional orchestras. It can be slow and spacy, or fast and rhythmic; it crosses many genres. The primary motivation for its creation is artistic and spiritual expression, not show business.

Like many arts aficionados, Hofstadter views music as a fundamental way for humans to communicate profound emotional information. Machines, no matter how sophisticated their mathematical abilities, should not be able to possess that spiritual power. As he wrote in Virtual Music, an anthology of debates about Cope’s research, Hofstadter worries Emmy proves that “things that touch me at my deepest core — pieces of music most of all, which I have always taken as direct soul-to-soul messages — might be effectively produced by mechanisms thousands if not millions of times simpler than the intricate biological machinery that gives rise to a human soul.”

United has demonstrated they know how to keep their airline in the forefront of their customer’s minds and I wanted this project to expand upon that satirically. I’ve been done “being angry” for quite some time and, if anything, I should thank United. They’ve given me a creative outlet that has brought people together from around the world. We had a pile of laughs making the recording and the video while the images are spinning on how to make “United: Song 2” even better than the first. So, thanks United! If my guitar had to be smashed due to extreme negligence I’m glad it was you that did it. Now sit back and enjoy the show.

Florentine Camerata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
december 2008 by vielmetti
The Florentine Camerata was a group of humanists, musicians, poets and intellectuals in late Renaissance Florence who gathered under the patronage of Count Giovanni de' Bardi to discuss and guide trends in the arts, especially music and drama.[1][2] They met at the house of Giovanni de' Bardi, and their gatherings had the reputation of having all the most famous men of Florence as frequent guests.[3][4][5] The apex of influence for the Camerata was between 1577 and 1582, gaining influence before this time, and dying off afterward.[6]

The response has always been fantastic. Tracks from the album have found their way onto the playlists on WFMU in New York, have been used as background music in between shows at the Music Box Theater in Chicago, Illinois, and, judging from the many emails I’ve received and from my server logs, has been enjoyed by hundreds of people all over the world.

october 2008 by vielmetti
Explain your logo “Visibility is a Trap”. / “It’s actually a quote from Foucault, from ‘Discipline and Punish’. It refers to surveillance, ie. being controlled through being visible to the authorities. So it has that meaning from the original quote but it also has what I think is important, that what I do is part of a collective and there is a certain degree of anonymity, so that it’s an invisible situation.”

Original Literature of Vintage Mechanical Musical Instruments
october 2008 by vielmetti
Many collectors of this unique slice of our musical heritage also collect original literature associated with the manufacturing and marketing of these wonderous machines. All too often, this segment of our collecting passion tends to be obscured by the highly visibile machines themselves, appealing to the 3 senses of sight, hearing and touch. Very often, these delightfully appealing machines are shared with the general public, be they home tours, local charity events, association events, and/or neighborhood gatherings.
However, serious research into the remarkable history of these music machines can only be realized through access to original literature. Regretably, much of this original literature tends to be hidden away in filing cabinets, workshops, libraries, et al, and all too often not accessible to serious researchers. In my own 40+ years in this delightful avocation, I too accumulated my fair share of original literature.

Michna - Ghostly International
october 2008 by vielmetti
"triple chrome dipped", "swiss glide" tracks. After moving to Miami in the mid-90’s, he co-founded the pioneering Secret Frequency Crew, who deftly mixed instrumental hip-hop and electronic into a coherent whole. Their appropriately titled 12” “Miami Eyes,” became an underground hit and caught the attention of a then-unknown Diplo who would ask him for production work. SFC’s debut LP “Forest of the Echo Downs” also put Adrian on Ghostly’s radar as it was one of label founder Sam Valenti IV’s top LPs in 2004.

Toms Essay - Measure for Measure - Opinion - New York Times Blog
september 2008 by vielmetti
So Mr. Brandenberg gets a copy of the song, and puts it through the newly created MP3. But instead of the “warm human voice” there are monstrous distortions, as though the Exorcist has somehow gotten into the system, shadowing every phrase. They spend months refining it, running “Tom’s Diner through the system over and over again with modifications, until it comes through clearly. “He wound up listening to the song thousands of times,” the article, written by Hilmar Schmundt, continued, “and the result was a code that was heard around the world. When an MP3 player compresses music by anyone from Courtney Love to Kenny G, it is replicating the way that Brandenburg heard Suzanne Vega.”

Pandora can't make money, may pull the plug
august 2008 by vielmetti
There's no doubt that SoundExchange has been strong-arming the Internet radio industry into oblivion. But most Internet radio stations like Pandora offer their services for free, or they offer accounts with more features at incredibly cheap prices. While some stations display ads on their website, Pandora hasn't done itself any favors by offering desktop clients and a wildly popular iPhone application (iTunes link) that rake in millions of users without so much as a single ad. Perhaps, for now, the "just build it and we'll figure out the business model later" approach won't be enough to save this experiment in new media.

But I am rediscovering the joys of vinyl. My dad, who passed away in 2006, had an extensive collection of LPs and 78s. He was a classically trained organist and opera buff, so his collection was top-heavy with organ and opera recordings. But he had a number of other recordings as well, mostly classical, but also Broadway and jazz. My mom, looking to clean out her basement, told my siblings and me to take what we wanted and she would get rid of the rest.

Arcade Ambience Project
august 2008 by vielmetti
The arcade ambience project is an attempt of mine to simulate the audio ambience of a crowded arcade room during the golden age of arcades in the 1980s. This is a sound I think that has been lost over the years and does not exist in today's pitiful arcades in my opinion. My main motivation for this project was to create some ambience in my basement arcade, having a somewhat authentic arcade background hum while I or my guests play on my MAME arcade cabinet. I thought that maybe others who have cabinets (or just miss real arcade nostalgia) could also benefit from my work.

Topspin » David Byrne and Brian Eno Release Everything That Happens Will Happen Today On The Topspin Platform
august 2008 by vielmetti
Topspin basics: we’re a startup, just over a year old, offices in Santa Monica and San Francisco (connected by a killer, cost-effective video conf setup from our friends at LifeSize), mostly software engineers, building software to help artists make money. In the same way ProTools brought software solutions to music production, we seek to apply technology solutions for music marketing. Regardless of your opinion of the future of the music industry, I think we all agree the old way is not the new way and one “new way” hasn’t materialized yet.

David Byrne & Brian Eno - Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
august 2008 by vielmetti
Brian Eno and I recently finished our first collaboration in about 30 years. The name of the new record is Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. For the most part, Brian did the music and I wrote some tunes, words and sang. It's familiar but completely new as well. We're pretty excited. The album is available exclusively from this Web site. You can stream all of the songs for free and purchase it in a variety of digital and physical formats, including a limited edition Deluxe Package designed by Stefan Sagmeister. All formats can be downloaded immediately and physical CDs will be shipped in the Fall. David Byrne Midtown PS: If you like what you hear, please share the streaming player on the left of the page with your friends, or embed it on your Web site, blog or profile. "It's basically an inverted D-major seventh chord, composed of a D, then a high C sharp and ending with a low F sharp," explained Wes Chappell, a Fret Mill clerk and musician who identified Old Gabriel's notes at a reporter's request. "At the very end it slides down to an A-major chord."
Asked for his artistic interpretation, Chappell offered: "It starts out a little hopeful, then it gets a little dissonant, as if it's reminding you of something — like, to get up and go to work."

After graduating and teaching school for four years, Sis felt a need for theoretical training in radical politics and enrolled in Commonwealth College, an unaccredited radical institution. Of this most influential period of her life, Sis was later to state, "Commonwealth taught me the most important thing in my life. It was there that I learned that my father was right, by God, and that the Socialist System remains the only means by which this great country will survive." While at Commonwealth Sis began writing songs, among which were: "How Can You Keep On Movin’ Unless You Migrate Too" (Ry Cooder heard this song on a New Lost City Ramblers album and recorded it. Unfortunately, he labeled the song "traditional," which meant that Sis was deprived of payment for her song.); most of the well-known verses to "There is Mean Things Happening in This Land" (written with her father’s help) by John Handoox;

From the 30th Annual Vancouver Folk Music Festival: Utah Phillips and Joe Keithley tell stories and sing songs about "The Life And Times Of Ginger Goodwin"
Utah Phillips played the very first Vancouver Folk Festival and many many more after that. Phillips was a labor organizer, folk singer storyteller, poet and self-described "Golden Voice of the Great Southwest". He wass also a true eclectic, archivist, historian, activist, philosopher, hobo, tramp, member of the IWW, and just about everything in between. He described the struggles of labour unions and the power of direct action. Now, let's watch out for the yard bulls, hop aboard that northbound freight, and move along down the track.
You may know Joe Keithley as Joey Shithead from DOA. Joe has run twice for the Green Party of British Columbia. This Canadian punk rock icon still has a passion for music and politics.

The Geometry of Musical Chords -- Tymoczko 313 (5783): 72 -- Science
august 2008 by vielmetti
A musical chord can be represented as a point in a geometrical space called an orbifold. Line segments represent mappings from the notes of one chord to those of another. Composers in a wide range of styles have exploited the non-Euclidean geometry of these spaces, typically by using short line segments between structurally similar chords. Such line segments exist only when chords are nearly symmetrical under translation, reflection, or permutation. Paradigmatically consonant and dissonant chords possess different near-symmetries and suggest different musical uses.

The Geometry of Consonance: Music and Mathematics
Elementary concepts of music theory can be translated into the language of contemporary geometry. Musical chords live in interesting geometrical spaces called "orbifolds"—spaces that contain unusual twists and strange "singularities," analogous to the black holes of General Relativity. Tymoczko provides an accessible, multimedia introduction to this new way of thinking about music, in which the audience can both listen to and watch pieces of music as they move along cones, Mobius strips, and other interesting spaces. He will conclude by explaining how Chopin's famously mysterious E minor prelude traces an interesting path along a necklace of four-dimensional cubes.

Words and chords. The semantic shifts of the Beatles' chords
august 2008 by vielmetti
Other favorite kinds of Beatles' chords can be added to this grid. The parallel minors (iv, i, v) form another cluster of chords the Beatles, seemingly arbitrarily, interjected into their chord progressions. A further conspicuous feature of their songs is the lavish use of relative (II, VI, III) and parallel (flat-VI, flat-III, flat-VII) Majors, which according to O'Grady (1983: 63-64) can be regarded as the most obvious harmonic innovation of the Beatles' compositions. Next to these, we sometimes even hear the relative minors (vii, #iv, #i) of the parallel Majors themselves. To this, of course, we can add the seventh chords, so popular in blues, country and rhythm and blues. Except for the last one, all these chord clusters can be fitted into a diagram by adding them to the diagonal structure. As a result a grid emerges in which chords sharing two tones with each other can be substituted for each other (figure 2).
