Power outage maps for all 50 states plus as many other countries as I can find - Vacuum
By state, alphabetically, as of June 16, 2011; 42/50 states have something here. The list is known to be incomplete, but the other incomplete list from Wikipedia (outage management system) is also stale. To be overly comprehensive, if there are screen captures that I can gather, I will; they will not be current when you look at them. Wherever possible, I'm also capturing service area or service territory maps.

Denouement: Only Disconnect
Shteyngart discovers that his frontiers are determined by his cell phone reception. If individuals are reliant on the map to organize their interactions with space, and that map is delivered via satellite, one's perspective is immediately determined by the connection to that data source. This then determines the partitioning (defining) of the space that the individual is able to inhabit. One cannot practice something that is not known; though we can repeat motions without understanding. This is merely repetition. Machines can repeat. People should know and be known. Thus to follow maps, of any sort, without allowing for our own wandering and practicing of place is to repeat actions without the understanding of how the structure of chosen steps affects our own reading/discourse with the space of the world around us in determining the practice of everyday life. Failure to practice results in an eventual loss of space because the reason for the space's existence (reading a book, walking without a screen, etc.) is forgotten or at least subsumed to the insistence of daily routine which is not the practice of everyday life. Rather we should end everyday "as we commune in some ancient way, laughing and groaning...in the fading...light." Indeed, Mr. Shteyngart, indeed.

David Rumsey Historical Map Collection | Two Dimensional GIS Browser
This is a special GIS (Geographic Information System) Browser that allows integration and interaction of historical maps with current geospatial data and other historical maps. Examination of the maps in GIS reveals changes in the history of the areas shown on the maps.
Eleven historical maps of the San Francisco Bay area from 1851 to 1926, eighteen historical maps of the Boston area from 1776 thru 1897, over thirty historical maps covering the area of the 1804 - 1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition, 35 maps of Washington D.C., and 32 maps of New York City are now available for viewing in the GIS Browser. Additional historic maps of U.S. cities and regions will be added in the near future including Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, Yosemite Valley, and Lake Tahoe. The current geospatial data that can be overlaid and compared to the historical maps includes roads, lakes, vparks, state boundaries, digital orthophotos (aerial photography), topographic mapsheets, digital elevation models and satellite imagery. Many of these maps may also be viewed in our Google Earth viewer.

World database of large urban areas, 1950-2050 - Nordpil
We are happy to share data that we prepared for a project earlier in 2009. Using the data request service provided by the UN Population Division, we have assembled and georeferenced the data from the World Urbanization Prospects, 2007 revision. This database represents the historic, current and future estimates and projections with number of inhabitants for the world's largest urban areas from 1950-2050. The data covers cities and other urban areas with more than 750,000 people.

Amazon.com: Maps of the Imagination: The Writer as Cartographer: Peter Turchi: Books
It's not uncommon to compare the writing of a story to the mapping of a world, but no one has so fully, or so seductively and rewardingly, performed as extended a meditation on this illuminating metaphor as Turchi. A fiction writer, anthologist, and the director of the MFA writing program at Warren Wilson College, Turchi parses with equal insight, knowledge, and elan the making of maps and the writing of fiction. Both involve purposeful omission; both require compression; both are subjective in their perspective, orientation, and emphasis; and both create illusions. Turchi's lively, idiosyncratic, and marvelously well-illustrated history of mapmaking (many cartographic quests are as quixotic as any in literature) is matched by reverie-inducing selections from Melville, Stevenson, Nabokov, Calvino, and Carver, as well as priceless musings on the Marx Brothers and the Road Runner. Ultimately, Turchi contrasts realistic and postrealistic approaches to storytelling

oakland crime maps XI: how close, and how bad? (tecznotes)
Did you know that Oakland Crimespotting is still kicking hard, with hundreds of alert subscribers and a smooth, regular flow of timely data from the Oakland Police Department? The project has essentially been on auto-pilot since we re-launched it back in March, but holiday side projects have been a favorite activity of mine for years, so this time I'm thinking about the relatively short time horizon Crimespotting offers.

Viewing Large Images - OpenLayers, GSIV, ModestMaps, DeepZoom, and Python « Itinerant Source
One problem unlike all the other tools mentioned here, which have python based tile cutting implementations, Deep Zoom was utilizing a Windows only based program to process images and cut tiles. I had a couple of hundred gigabytes of images to cut, and not a windows system in sight. But based on this excellent blog write up by Daniel Gasiencia, I constructed a python program using PIL that can be used as a command line tool or library for constructing Deep Zoom Compatible image pyramids. It can be found here, hopefully its useful to others. As a bonus, it runs in a fraction of the memory (1/6 by my measurements) needed by the GSIV image tile cutter and faster as well ( 100 images in 5m vs 1.25hr). Unfortunately the Seadragon Ajax Library is not opensource, but non commercial usage seems to be okay with the license, and i’ll give it over to some lawyers to figure it out.

The State of Transit Routing - O'Reilly Radar
What's also interesting is the potential of these routing tools beyond actual specific individual routes. Taken in amalgamation the routing distances form a new topography of the space. Given a point in the city, how far can I travel in 20 minutes? in 40 minutes? for less than $1.75? This type of map is known as an isochrone. Tom Carden and MySociety developed London Travel Time Maps that allow users to highlight the spots in London given a range of house prices and travel times.

The Vigorous North: The Black Belt: How Soil Types Determined the 2008 Election in the Deep South
This is not a political blog. However, this is a story I couldn't pass up: the story of how voting patterns in the 2008 election were essentially determined 85 million years ago, in the Cretaceous Period. It's also a story about how soil science relates to political science, by way of historical chance.

Manifest Density - coloring your opinion
The colors themselves are also a problem. As I'm sure you all remember keenly from this post I wrote in 2006, perceptual image codecs spend more bits on brightness than on color because the color-sensing cones in your eyes have a much lousier dynamic range than the light-sensing rods. We're worse at distinguishing between levels of color than between levels of brightness. And since the percentage of the vote in any given spot on the map should always sum to 100, with negligible green (third party) contributions, the brightness will be relatively uniform (although admittedly not quite due to the perceptual differences between colors — monitor calibration and colorspace begins to enter the picture here, and is just as hideously complex as you might imagine).

ScapeToad - cartogram software by the Choros laboratory
Most 2D-maps are used to represent topographic metrics: distances and areas measured on the map (multiplied by the map scale) give traveling distances and land surfaces. In some cases, this information is irrelevant or even misleading [see an example]. As a cartographer, you may wish to use map metrics to represent other data, such as human populations or amounts of produced resources. This is what ScapeToad is for.

Calculate distance and bearing between two Latitude/Longitude points using Haversine formula in JavaScript
The Haversine formula ‘remains particularly well-conditioned for numerical computation even at small distances’ – unlike calculations based on the spherical law of cosines. (It was published by R W Sinnott in Sky and Telescope, 1984, though has been known about for much longer; the ‘half-versed-sine’ is (1-cosθ)/2, or sin²(θ/2) – don’t ask, I’m not a mathematician).

In fact, when Sinnott devised the Haversine formula, computational precision was limited. Nowadays, JavaScript (and most modern computers) use IEEE 754 64-bit floating-point numbers, which provide 15 significant figures of precision. With this precision, the simple spherical law of cosines formula gives well-conditioned results down to distances as small as around 1 metre. In view of this it is probably worth, in most situations, using either the simpler law of cosines or the more accurate ellipsoidal Vincenty formula in preference to Haversine! (See notes below on the limitations in accuracy of the spherical model).

Haversine formula - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The haversine formula is an equation important in navigation, giving great-circle distances between two points on a sphere from their longitudes and latitudes. It is a special case of a more general formula in spherical trigonometry, the law of haversines, relating the sides and angles of spherical "triangles".

Frequently asked questions
The cartograms were made using the diffusion method of Gastner and Newman. ..population to diffuse in the two-dimensional space of the map, carrying the boundaries of the states or counties with it, until it reaches a uniform equilibrium. The diffusion equation is integrated in Fourier space, where it takes a particularly simple form: the initial density function is evaluated on a 4608x3072 lattice, transformed using a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform, convolved with a Gaussian kernel and then back-transformed to give the diffusion field at a later time. I used closed (Neumann) boundary conditions at the edges of the map, so the Fourier transform is a discrete cosine transform.

The diffusion field is then used to calculate the diffusion velocity as a function of position and the velocity integrated over time to give the displacement of the map features. The integration is performed using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta integrator with an adaptive step size and local extrapolation

The Turkish Map Fold
As the name suggests, the Turkish Map Fold is a way to fold a map. Generally speaking, we fold maps to make them easier to store and carry. This particular method is interesting because when you grasp the two edges and pull it open, the entire surface of the map comes into view in a way that resembles a blooming flower. And when you push the edges back together, it refolds itself to the way it was. The photo above shows an example of an artist's book constructed from a number of squares of paper folded in this manner, all joined together with adhesive.

Maya Lin: Systematic Landscapes is a major exhibition of new sculptures, drawings, and installations by renowned artist Maya Lin. In 1981, Lin's Vietnam Veterans Memorial dramatically changed the language and form of commemorative sculpture by infusing minimalist design with the emotional charge of memory. Her subsequent work, whether monument, sculpture, design object, or building is equally characterized by its harmony of message and material. In recent years, Lin has focused on a reconsideration of landscape in a time of ecological tension and change. This new body of work engages the issue of our fragile connection to the environment in timely and poetic ways.

The Offices of St. Clair County - Parks & Recreation
The St. Clair County Parks and Recreation Commission (PARC) is working in conjunction with 13 local units of government to develop a 54-mile paved trail from Lakeport State Park to New Baltimore. St. Clair County helps plan and promote the trail while each local unit of government is responsible for constructing their section of the trail. Most trail construction projects are funded by grants. PARC usually helps to fund the local match required for trail construction grants.

St. Clair County’s eastern border is unique. It showcases over 50 miles of shoreline along some of the best fresh water in the world — Lake Huron, the St. Clair River, and Lake St. Clair. Along that shoreline, we have urban areas, open vistas, beaches, parks, attractions, an international bridge and ferries to Canada, giant lake freighters and now a linear trail — the Bridge to Bay Trail, which will be a paved pedestrian/bike path 54 miles in length.

BBC NEWS | UK | Online maps 'wiping out history'
She said: "Corporate cartographers are demolishing thousands of years of history - not to mention Britain's remarkable geography - at a stroke by not including them on maps which millions of us now use every day. "We're in real danger of losing what makes maps so unique, giving us a feel for a place even if we've never been there." Projects such as Open Street Map, through which thousands of Britons have contributed their local knowledge to map pubs, landmarks and even post boxes online, are the first step in the fight back against "corporate blankwash", she added.

A List Apart: Articles: Mapping Memory: Web Designer as Information Cartographer
The redesign of my law school’s website is not unlike the creation of a rhetorician’s memory dwelling. Built from the collective memory of our past and current students and faculty, the website is an abstraction—a map—of that memory, created to persuade prospective students to apply, current students to collaborate, and alumni to remain engaged with the school. The crucial difference is that the law school’s memory dwelling, unlike Quintilian’s, has more than one inhabitant. Our users, by continually adding to and altering the school’s collective memory, contribute to the production of the website—the abstraction of that memory. Instead of imposing an architecture upon users from above, we should use the flow of their interactions with the site and with each other to determine the form of this memory map.

pocketMMaps is software for creating PocketMod-style books for a map image too large to fit on a single page. Maps are generated dynamically and then sliced in to (PocketMod) page-sized pieces and re-arranged on multiple sheets of paper so that when printed and folded you get a little book with the map laid out in handy 2-page spreads. Just like the maps you see in the back of travel guides. It may seem as though I have an obsession with destroying the travel book industry but I don't, really. It's just that their maps suck and their books are too big to fit in my back pocket.

Antique pocket maps, folding maps
Antique pocket maps, frequently called folding maps, occupy a special niche in the map-collecting world. During the 19th century in the United States, these little booklets were frequently carried by emigrants travelling across an unknown continent. Due to their physical format and frequent folding, pocket maps had a low survival rate. Today, they stand at the intersection of antique maps and ephemera. Some of the most important and rare maps on the market today are pocket maps.

Of Exactitude in Science - Borges
...In that Empire, the craft of Cartography attained such Perfection that the Map of a Single province covered the space of an entire City, and the Map of the Empire itself an entire Province. In the course of Time, these Extensive maps were found somehow wanting, and so the College of Cartographers evolved a Map of the Empire that was of the same Scale as the Empire and that coincided with it point for point. Less attentive to the Study of Cartography, succeeding Generations came to judge a map of such Magnitude cumbersome, and, not without Irreverence, they abandoned it to the Rigours of sun and Rain. In the western Deserts, tattered Fragments of the Map are still to be found, Sheltering an occasional Beast or beggar; in the whole Nation, no other relic is left of the Discipline of Geography.
