About the Food Environment Atlas
The Economic Research Service would like to acknowledge the support it has received from across the Federal Government, academia, and the private sector in compiling the information for the Atlas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided the statistics on obesity and diabetes; the National Cancer Institute provided indicators on physical activity and recreation centers; USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service provided indicators on farmers’ markets; USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service provided information on State-level food and nutrition assistance program participation rates; and the National Farm-to-School Network provided statistics on farm-to-school programs. The information on State beverage and snack taxes are from the Bridging the Gap Program, University of Illinois at Chicago.

Automated snow mapping system
The automated snow mapping system is based on a synergy of GOES-Imager, NOAA-AVHRR and DMSP-SSM/I data and produces daily snow cover maps for the North American continent. The original map is prepared in a Platte Carre (lat-lon) projection with a 1/25 of a degree grid size.

NIC IMS Home Page
The National Ice Center (NIC), a tri-agency operational center, operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States Navy, and the United States Coast Guard, prepares a daily Northern Hemisphere Snow and Ice chart. This chart, prepared on a polar stereographic projection is centered on the North Pole with a 60 degree latitude of true scale, provides information on the areal coverage of the snow and ice. The visible and Near-infrared imagery of the polar orbiting satellites (POES) and geostationary orbiting environmental satellites (GOES) are the primary tools for the analysis of this snow and ice cover. Low resolution visible data are augmented whenever possible by the visible high resolution imagery and visible GOES, GMS, MTSAT, and METEOSAT data. In addition, ground weather observations, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), microwave scatterometer returns, weather prediction, sea ice models, buoys, flights, and DMSP visible and microwave products

In the Google Labs, Google Transit provides some information about public transportation, with the most extensive coverage of tranportation information available in Japan, covering all regional and national rail networks, domestic airlines and ferries. But the system described in this patent document goes far beyond making published schedules, routes, and stopping points available to people traveling.

oakland crime maps XI: how close, and how bad? (tecznotes)
Did you know that Oakland Crimespotting is still kicking hard, with hundreds of alert subscribers and a smooth, regular flow of timely data from the Oakland Police Department? The project has essentially been on auto-pilot since we re-launched it back in March, but holiday side projects have been a favorite activity of mine for years, so this time I'm thinking about the relatively short time horizon Crimespotting offers.

The Vigorous North: The Black Belt: How Soil Types Determined the 2008 Election in the Deep South
This is not a political blog. However, this is a story I couldn't pass up: the story of how voting patterns in the 2008 election were essentially determined 85 million years ago, in the Cretaceous Period. It's also a story about how soil science relates to political science, by way of historical chance.

ScapeToad - cartogram software by the Choros laboratory
Most 2D-maps are used to represent topographic metrics: distances and areas measured on the map (multiplied by the map scale) give traveling distances and land surfaces. In some cases, this information is irrelevant or even misleading [see an example]. As a cartographer, you may wish to use map metrics to represent other data, such as human populations or amounts of produced resources. This is what ScapeToad is for.

Calculate distance and bearing between two Latitude/Longitude points using Haversine formula in JavaScript
The Haversine formula ‘remains particularly well-conditioned for numerical computation even at small distances’ – unlike calculations based on the spherical law of cosines. (It was published by R W Sinnott in Sky and Telescope, 1984, though has been known about for much longer; the ‘half-versed-sine’ is (1-cosθ)/2, or sin²(θ/2) – don’t ask, I’m not a mathematician).

In fact, when Sinnott devised the Haversine formula, computational precision was limited. Nowadays, JavaScript (and most modern computers) use IEEE 754 64-bit floating-point numbers, which provide 15 significant figures of precision. With this precision, the simple spherical law of cosines formula gives well-conditioned results down to distances as small as around 1 metre. In view of this it is probably worth, in most situations, using either the simpler law of cosines or the more accurate ellipsoidal Vincenty formula in preference to Haversine! (See notes below on the limitations in accuracy of the spherical model).

Haversine formula - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The haversine formula is an equation important in navigation, giving great-circle distances between two points on a sphere from their longitudes and latitudes. It is a special case of a more general formula in spherical trigonometry, the law of haversines, relating the sides and angles of spherical "triangles".

The Offices of St. Clair County - Parks & Recreation
The St. Clair County Parks and Recreation Commission (PARC) is working in conjunction with 13 local units of government to develop a 54-mile paved trail from Lakeport State Park to New Baltimore. St. Clair County helps plan and promote the trail while each local unit of government is responsible for constructing their section of the trail. Most trail construction projects are funded by grants. PARC usually helps to fund the local match required for trail construction grants.

St. Clair County’s eastern border is unique. It showcases over 50 miles of shoreline along some of the best fresh water in the world — Lake Huron, the St. Clair River, and Lake St. Clair. Along that shoreline, we have urban areas, open vistas, beaches, parks, attractions, an international bridge and ferries to Canada, giant lake freighters and now a linear trail — the Bridge to Bay Trail, which will be a paved pedestrian/bike path 54 miles in length.

Of Exactitude in Science - Borges
...In that Empire, the craft of Cartography attained such Perfection that the Map of a Single province covered the space of an entire City, and the Map of the Empire itself an entire Province. In the course of Time, these Extensive maps were found somehow wanting, and so the College of Cartographers evolved a Map of the Empire that was of the same Scale as the Empire and that coincided with it point for point. Less attentive to the Study of Cartography, succeeding Generations came to judge a map of such Magnitude cumbersome, and, not without Irreverence, they abandoned it to the Rigours of sun and Rain. In the western Deserts, tattered Fragments of the Map are still to be found, Sheltering an occasional Beast or beggar; in the whole Nation, no other relic is left of the Discipline of Geography.
