In October 2005, a second library-related mass digitization project was announced: The Open Content Alliance (OCA).3 The OCA distinguished itself from Google in a number of ways. First, it would only digitize works in the public domain. Second, it would be "open." That is, it would make information about its technology available to others. Third, it was library-driven (although it receives funding from significant technology companies like Adobe and Microsoft). These latter two were in direct response to some criticisms of the commercial and secretive nature of Google's project. Scanning would be done by the Internet Archive using a system that they developed called "Scribe."
