Ann Arbor Area Events & Activities for Preschoolers
I am a stay at home mom to a 3.5 yr old. I have been living in Ann Arbor for 6 years. I have been tracking events of interest for our playgroup for a few months now via a Word document. I decided it was time to go "public" with the list. Way back in college, I minored in computer science and am always online now. So a website, Twitter account, Facebook group, and blog seem the way to go.

this is sippey.typepad.com: harold liked nine kinds of pie
So tonight I’m putting the kids to bed and the youngest picked Harold and the Purple Crayon from the shelf as the book she wanted read to her. You know the one, where Harold walks along and makes up the story with his crayon as he goes, ending as he “made his bed, got in it, and drew up the covers.” (The pun doesn’t escape the four year old.)

The iPhone was in the pocket, and I vaguely remembered an animated version of Harold. So about a minute later we were watching this.

I’m old enough to think the book’s still better (the kids preferred the animated version), but if there was any remaining doubt that we’re living in the future, let that doubt be cast aside.

A CD spectrometer
A simple spectrometer can be built from a CD and a box. Cut a slit on one side of the box. Place the CD on the other side with about 60 degree angle. Look down into the openning on the box. The slit should not be too wide, otherwise the spectrum lines will be blurred. It should not be too narrow either, otherwise the spectrum is too dim. I use a 0.2mm wide slit.

myliblog: Uncle Bobby's Wedding
Thank you for working with my assistant to allow me to fit your concerns about “Uncle Bobby's Wedding,” by Sarah S. Brannen, into our “reconsideration” process. I have been assured that you have received and viewed our relevant policies: the Library Bill of Rights, the Freedom to Read, Free Access to Libraries for Minors, the Freedom to View, and our Reconsideration Policy.

The intent of providing all that isn't just to occupy your time. It's to demonstrate that our lay Board of Trustees –- which has reviewed and adopted these policies on behalf of our library -- has spent time thinking about the context in which the library operates, and thoughtfully considered the occasional discomfort (with our culture or constituents) that might result. There's a lot to consider.
