The Acceleration of Addictiveness
january 2011 by vielmetti
[4] People commonly use the word "procrastination" to describe what they do on the Internet. It seems to me too mild to describe what's happening as merely not-doing-work. We don't call it procrastination when someone gets drunk instead of working.

Jenni Russell: Shorn of the rituals of old, death maroons us in grief | Comment is free | The Guardian
january 2009 by vielmetti
When it happened I realised that I, like many of us, had neither the public ritual nor the private knowledge to tell me how to get through this. I needed to talk to those who had already lived through it, and who could tell me what had helped them. I wanted to talk about my father with those who had cared about him. Lastly, and almost most importantly, I wanted the close friends of mine who had never met my parents to know what had happened. And I wasn't sure how far it was reasonable to ask for any of this from anyone.

Perhaps it’s because my hearing loss is genetic and not age-related, but I am not at all embarrassed about my new bionic ears. Now, whether it’s a close friend, a casual acquaintance or a co-worker, I greet them the same way.
“Look, I have hearing aids!” I exclaim while pulling my hair back to show them.
At first people seem embarrassed by my candor. But once I get them talking, they share their own stories of parents, friends and spouses who remain in denial about their hearing loss.

Blue Cross: Financial disaster possible without legislative fix - Crain's Detroit Business
december 2008 by vielmetti
Mark Bartlett, CFO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, said Monday that Blue Cross is headed for financial disaster and possible loss of its membership in the national BlueCross BlueShield Association unless the state Legislature modifies the individual health insurance market this year.
In a 45-minute telephone press conference, Bartlett and Andrew Hetzel, vice president of corporate communications, said Blue Cross has submitted more than 300 pages of financial documents to Michigan Attorney General Michael Cox that supports its case for quick legislative action.

Try massaging the various muscles that may be involved. Probe all of the muscles of the face, shoulders, and back of the neck. (Avoid the area around the throat.) Press on the muscles to identify extremely painful points. Massage the painful spot with hard, slow, short strokes. Do this several times a day until the muscle is no longer painful when pressed.
To massage the masseter muscles on each side of your jaw, place your thumb inside your mouth and squeeze the thick muscle in your cheek (toward the back of your mouth) with your fingers. To get at the harder-to-reach jaw muscles inside your mouth, use your index finger to probe for tender areas behind the teeth, and use the finger to massage these spots.
Other home-care therapies, such as moist heat or cold packs on the face, vitamin supplements, or biofeedback are useful for some people. Exercising several times each week may help you relax, strengthen your body, increase flexibility, and increase your ability to handle pain.

Pink eye (conjunctivitis) - MayoClinic.com
november 2008 by vielmetti
Pink eye (conjunctivitis) is an inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane (conjunctiva) that lines your eyelid and part of your eyeball. Inflammation causes small blood vessels in the conjunctiva to become more prominent, which is what causes the pink or red cast to the whites of your eyes.

Phys Ed - Stretching - The Truth - NYTimes.com
november 2008 by vielmetti
Dynamic stretching is at its most effective when it’s relatively sports specific. “You need range-of-motion exercises that activate all of the joints and connective tissue that will be needed for the task ahead,” says Terrence Mahon, a coach with Team Running USA, home to the Olympic marathoners Ryan Hall and Deena Kastor. For runners, an ideal warm-up might include squats, lunges and “form drills” like kicking your buttocks with your heels. Athletes who need to move rapidly in different directions, like soccer, tennis or basketball players, should do dynamic stretches that involve many parts of the body. “Spider-Man” is a particularly good drill: drop onto all fours and crawl the width of the court, as if you were climbing a wall. (For other dynamic stretches, see the sidebar below.)

Mark Smolinski: Detect Epidemics Before They Start
september 2008 by vielmetti
Back in May 1993, as a medical resident at the University of Arizona, Mark Smolinski volunteered for a shift with the state's Department of Health. Right after he started, Arizona and neighboring states were struck by a deadly outbreak of an unidentified respiratory illness. The young doctor found himself face-to-face with an emerging epidemic, part of a team that spent sleepless months struggling to contain the outbreak. "I was going from hospital to hospital trying to determine the patients' exposures," he recalls of his harrowing first assignment. "Almost all the cases were under the age of 30, and it had a very high mortality rate."

Role of curcumin in health and disease. [Arch Physiol Biochem. 2008] - PubMed Result
september 2008 by vielmetti
Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is an orange-yellow component of turmeric (Curcuma longa), a spice often found in curry powder. In recent years, considerable interest has been focused on curcumin due to its use to treat a wide variety of disorders without any side effects. It is one of the major curcuminoids of turmeric, which impart its characteristic yellow colour. It was used in ancient times on the Indian subcontinent to treat various illnesses such as rheumatism, body ache, skin diseases, intestinal worms, diarrhoea, intermittent fevers, hepatic disorders, biliousness, urinary discharges, dyspepsia, inflammations, constipation, leukoderma, amenorrhea, and colic. Curcumin has the potential to treat a wide variety of inflammatory diseases including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, psoriasis, etc, through modulation of numerous molecular targets.

Scientists Find Blueberries Reverse Age Related Memory Deficits
august 2008 by vielmetti
“Impaired or failing memory as we get older is one of life’s major inconveniences. Scientists have known of the potential health benefits of diets rich in fresh fruits for a long time. Our previous work had suggested that flavonoid compounds had some kind of effect on memory, but until now we had not known the potential mechanisms to account for this,” stated Dr. Jeremy Spencer, a lecturer in Molecular Nutrition at the University of Reading, who headed the study.
