FOIA Details Stewart's Modified Agreement With WVU
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart's revised employment agreement addressed the Mountaineers' current NCAA infractions case.

Stewart signed the agreement in November, setting the stage for Athletic Director Oliver Luck to hire Dana Holgorsen, who was introduced last month.

Holgorsen will be the Mountaineers' offensive coordinator for the 2011 season and replace Stewart as head coach after the season ends.

Michigan and Rich Rodriguez: Inside the Tragicomedy - WSJ.com
Looking at Michigan's past three seasons, it's not hard to divine dozens of management lessons. But none of them would resolve college football's central conflict: It's a billion-dollar business with revenue that can fund entire athletic departments and passions that can fuel endowment drives, but it's all built on the backs of stressed-out coaches and amateur athletes.

MSU police report shines some light on altercation, but most blacked out | freep.com | Detroit Free Press
The Free Press obtained the police report through a Freedom of Information Act request, first filed Nov. 30 and refiled Jan. 21. However, MSU redacted so much of the report with a marker — the majority of pages are little more than black blobs — that it sheds almost no light on the video’s contents, nor the 911 calls, time line of events, interviews with witnesses and suspects, search warrant and polygraph test contained within.

News Innovators on the Frontline: MGoBlog.com | News Innovation
The kind of people who are affected by The Ann Arbor News becoming annarbor.com are generally less hardcore about their sports coverage.

But with the transition to the web, they are promising to link out a lot, so having more of a two-way relationship with the local news sites would help, probably just in terms of Google ranking and maybe some traffic. Right now I link to them and The Free Press fairly often, and I don’t think I’ve ever received a link from any of those sources. That seems a little unbalanced.

Here’s one of his latest posts at The Wayne Fontes Experience, about Dave Birkett leaving the Oakland Press’s Detroit Lions beat for a gig covering the Michigan Wolverines at the new AnnArbor.com. It's a big loss for Lions coverage, and it's troubling to see good reporters (Danny Knobler, Jon Paul Morosi) move on. Detroit sports fans are losing out.

Changing how fans follow Michigan football | The Michigan Daily
To put it simply, Cook’s website has become the place for Michigan football coverage. In just a few years, he has overthrown the ranks of professional journalists who cover the team, representing a drastic change in the culture of news coverage (in this case, the coverage of Michigan football), a change that most major newspapers have yet to adapt to. Traditional sports coverage is vulnerable to new competition in its own way. As Cook has shown, a guy in the stands can have an edge over the big-name columnists in the press box.

The Little Brown Jug - The Daily Gopher
Saturday should be fun and the thought of watching the Gophers (in their gold pants) sprinting accross the field and hoisting the Jug in celebration is really exciting. Let's not feel sorry for Michigan, there have been dozens of beat downs at the hands of the Wolverines, this is no time to take it easy on them. Let's beat them, beat them soundly and get the Jug back.

1927 UM Ohio State game story Alumnus Mag.
No account of the day can be complete without a word of praise for the fashion in which the extraordinary traffic -some, 20,000 visiting cars-was handled by the State police. Long before noon Ann Arbor held so many of the trim figures in dark gray uniforms that it looked like a military occupation. At every busy corner there was one of these men; at super-busy corners there were two. And they did the job. They kept traffic moving, both while the city was filling and later as it emptied, 'so that there were no accidents and no really serious congestion. They performed their duty as efficiently as though they too had been trained by the Michigan coaching staff.

Utah (0-0) @ Michigan (0-0) - Block U
For Utah to leave Ann Arbor with a victory, things will need to happen and they will probably need a little luck on their side. I say this because Michigan is going to be fired up for this game. Not because they lost to Appalachian State last year, not because they have something to prove, but because it's a new era for Michigan football. As they transition from Lloyd Carr to Rich Rodriguez, the anticipation and excitement following this team is pretty massive. These players are going to be invested and pumped to start anew. They want to write a new chapter of tradition in the vast book known as Michigan football. This day, this new era, unfortunately, begins against Utah.

eBay Watch- The Drunk and Old 98 | MVictors.com: Michigan Football Blog
Here’s a great moment of Michigan Football lore. Were you aware of the showdown between Wolverine legend and Heisman trophy winner Tom Harmon and a drunken fan during Michigan’s game at Cal back in 1940? I recently purchased this page out of Life magazine on eBay for $6.50. It depicts the scene. Additional research yielded some great quotes from the fan, enjoy:

The Chicago-born lineman played for Fielding Yost from 1904-06 during the point-a-minute reign of terror. Looks like the portly Graham conducted a few personal reigns of terror at the local bakery. Joy Miller & The Disgrace of 1909 | MVictors.com: Michigan Football Blog
The past few weeks have yielded a few cool auctions (and an idiot selling his allegiance to Michigan) highlighted by this beauty: a football ‘program’ from the Michigan vs. Marquette game held on October 23, 1909. Other than a missing cover page, this thing is pretty cool. Apparantly I wasn’t the only one that found this pretty cool as it fetched $258. As for the game itself the Bentley Museum site revealed that Michigan won a 6-5 squeaker on the road. You’ve got to love some of the old ads especially the Hippodrome Roller Rink and the Ziegler Chocolates and Bon Bons. The scorecard is pretty wild: you can track Touchdowns, “Goals”, Field Goals and Safeties.

eBay Watch: Blue Get Bombed in the Bronx | MVictors.com: Michigan Football Blog
1950 was a special season in Michigan football history. Many M historians know this is the year that the Wolverines defeated Ohio State 9-3 in the epic Snow Bowl. That classic win earned the Blue a trip to Pasadena where they defeated Cal 14-6 on two late touchdowns.
All’s well that ends well, but things didn’t start well and included a trip to New York. The next edition of eBay Watch features this ticket stub from the Army-Michigan game held October 14, 1950 at Yankee Stadium:

eBay Watch: 1904 and the Mountaineer Romp | MVictors.com: Michigan Football Blog
The 1904 squad faced off with the team that every college football fan would love to see visit Ann Arbor in the next few years…the West Virginia Mountaineers. On October 22 coach Fielding Yost took on the team from his home state and beat them like they just sued him for $4 million. Make that $5 million. The Wolverines won 130-0 in front a sparse home crowd.

eBay Watch: 1896 Lehigh Program | MVictors.com: Michigan Football Blog
Michigan had an exceptional season in 1896 as Michigan’s win against Lehigh continued an undefeated run. The week later the Wolverines edged Minnesota (pre-Little Brown Jug) 6-4. Home wins over Oberlin and Wittenberg set up a showdown with the University of Chicago. I may have more on that game later, but unfortunately the Wolverines fell 7-6 in what was the first major college football played indoors, inside “The Coliseum”.

[physics/0505169] A network-based ranking system for American college football
American college football faces a conflict created by the desire to stage national championship games between the best teams of a season when there is no conventional playoff system to decide which those teams are. Instead, ranking of teams is based on their record of wins and losses during the season, but each team plays only a small fraction of eligible opponents, making the system underdetermined or contradictory or both. It is an interesting challenge to create a ranking system that at once is mathematically well-founded, gives results in general accord with received wisdom concerning the relative strengths of the teams, and is based upon intuitive principles, allowing it to be accepted readily by fans and experts alike. Here we introduce a one-parameter ranking method that satisfies all of these requirements and is based on a network representation of college football schedules.
