Ann Arbor Illustrator Wins 2011 Caldecott Award | Ann Arbor District Library
Ann Arbor resident Erin Stead has won the 2011 Caldecott Award for best illustration of a children's book for her book A Sick Day for Amos McGee. This award is given annually by the American Library Association. The charming picture book, written by Ms. Stead's husband Philip, tells the story of what happens when the zookeeper calls in sick. The animals know what good care he takes of them so they try to reciprocate the favor. Picture a group of zoo animals taking a city bus across town to the zookeeper's home.

City Comforts: How to Build an Urban Village | David Sucher
The challenge with the North American city is to create a walkable city without giving up the car. My belief is that we are so wedded to cars that if you wait for better urbanism to give up cars then you will wait a very long time indeed.
That's what my book is about: reconciling the walkable city and the car. It has taken me decades to accept such a bizarre notion. But it's what I see.

Amazon.com: The Road to Hell: The Ravaging Effects of Foreign Aid and International Charity (9780684828008): Michael Maren: Books
Before you mail another check to Save the Children or join the Peace Corps, read this book. Michael Maren shows that the international aid industry is a big business more concerned with winning its next big government contract than helping needy people. The problem isn't a lack of charity missions in the Third World, but that the best intentions of these idealists are often inadvertently destructive, thanks to a deadly combination of their naiveté and the willingness of native elites to exploit them. Maren spent many years in Africa living this life. This is a splendid, literate, muckraking memoir of his experiences.

Search Patterns: Design for Discovery
Search is among the most disruptive innovations of our time. It influences what we buy and where we go. It shapes how we learn and what we believe. This provocative and inspiring book explores design patterns that apply across the categories of web, e-commerce, enterprise, desktop, mobile, social, and real time search and discovery. Using colorful illustrations and examples, the authors bring modern information retrieval to life, covering such diverse topics as relevance ranking, faceted navigation, multi-touch, and mixed reality. Search Patterns challenges us to invent the future of discovery while serving as a practical guide to help us make search applications better today.

QUT | ePrints Archive - Handbook of Research on Urban Informatics: The Practice and Promise of the Real-Time City
I hope that this book will stimulate your mental metabolism with a rich and multi-faceted degustation menu. Sampling the 'dishes' prepared for this urban smorgasbord will take you on a tour de force covering a great range of timely and significant topics and issues such as sustainability, digital identity, surveillance, privacy, access, environmental impact, activism, participatory planning, and community engagement. The book exposes research accounts which seek to convey an appreciation for local differences, for the empowerment of people and for the human-centred design of urban technology. Both contributors and coverage are international. They are not limited to cases based in Europe and America only. Rather, I purposefully sourced chapters covering Asia, Africa and Australia by a most engaging and prolific group of authors not afraid of presenting challenging and controversial ideas.

A Simple Book Repair Manual / Dartmouth
(we end up fixing some set of books that get damaged by our kids so that they go back into circulation at the library right away)

Finally, in-house book repair should not be seen as a solution to book damage. We know that a certain percentage of our collection will wear out each year. An element of an effective book repair operation should be an examination of the causes that generate repairs. While some causes, such as the absence of environmental controls, may be impossible to change, increasing staff and users' awareness of how books should be handled will aid in decreasing the number of books needing repairs. A responsible conservation operation should be run in tandem with a program to increase public and staff awareness of the need for responsible general collections book handling.

Black Oak Books
The new owners plan to expand the available space in our flagship Shattuck store by these renovations. They will use this extra space to substantially expand the stores stock of both new and used books at the store. In addition, we have leased space on San Pablo Ave so that we can greatly increase the number of high quality scholarly used books for sale through a modern "brick and click" store model. We are thus extremely interested in paying top dollar for high quality libraries!

Nina Katchadourian - sorted books
books sorted so that their titles tell a story; awesome. The Sorted Books project began in 1993 years ago and is ongoing. The project has taken place in many different places over the years, ranging form private homes to specialized public book collections. The process is the same in every case: culling through a collection of books, pulling particular titles, and eventually grouping the books into clusters so that the titles can be read in sequence, from top to bottom. The final results are shown either as photographs of the book clusters or as the actual stacks themselves, shown on the shelves of the library they were drawn from. Taken as a whole, the clusters from each sorting aim to examine that particular library's focus, idiosyncrasies, and inconsistencies — a cross-section of that library's holdings. At present, the Sorted Books project comprises more than 130 book clusters.
