Am I a science journalist? | Not Exactly Rocket Science | Discover Magazine
june 2011 by vielmetti
I know I fall somewhere on that spectrum. Am I a journalist? Honestly, I care less about the answer than I once did. I am not being blase – I care very deeply about journalism, but there are few things more boring than journalists arguing over what counts as journalism. We live in a world full of stories, about amazing people doing amazing things and terrible people doing terrible things. I will use every medium I can to tell those stories. I will try to tell them accurately so people aren’t misled. I will try to tell them well so people will listen. If people want to argue about what to call that, that’s fine for them.

Why is Seeking Alpha paying its contributors? | Analysis & Opinion |
january 2011 by vielmetti
In other words, Seeking Alpha here isn’t really paying per pageview at all. (If it were, it would pay contributors of all articles, not just exclusive articles.) What’s really happening is that Seeking Alpha is buying premium content, at zero up-front cost, which it can then resell in any way it likes and for as much money as it likes, with none of those revenues being shared with the author.

Facts dog Cleveland newspaper defender - The Future of Journalism - Open Salon
july 2009 by vielmetti
This blog is going to ask for your indulgence. It is frankly obsessed with the 15-minute video at Cleveland.com that both Katharine and I wrote about yesterday. We're thinking of changing the name of this blog to the How Crazy Was That Cleveland Plain Dealer Video? Blog.
It's just such a stunning example of newspaper-industry hubris and cluelessness. True confession: I'm writing about it for the second time, and I still haven't made it past the 10-minute mark, where Cleveland Plain Dealer "reader representative" Ted Diadiun refers to bloggers as "a bunch of pipsqueaks."

Digress. (Especially (auto)biographically. Note that Gorky was born Aleksey Maksimovich Peshkov, and "Maxim" derives from his Father's name, the "-ovich" being a patronymic ending. Thus does one Maxim beget another. Hopefully, more on Russian and other naming conventions in a later log. And perhaps someone more literary or political than I will have something to say about "the father of Soviet literature and the founder of the doctrine of socialist realism," and the reason Nizhny Novgorod was for many years hard to find on a map. The Nizhny Novgorodites are still proud of Gorky as far as I can tell, but not enough to have their city bear his name. (Beaver, Utah is not named for me (or vice versa (note the embedded parenthetical - these are good)), but it is apparently the birthplace of Butch Cassidy, ne Robert LeRoy Parker. So why "Butch"? Well, he once worked as a butcher. His most famous partner in crime (aka Harry Longabaugh) was nom de guerred in a reverse Gorky manoever:

Changing how fans follow Michigan football | The Michigan Daily
november 2008 by vielmetti
To put it simply, Cook’s website has become the place for Michigan football coverage. In just a few years, he has overthrown the ranks of professional journalists who cover the team, representing a drastic change in the culture of news coverage (in this case, the coverage of Michigan football), a change that most major newspapers have yet to adapt to. Traditional sports coverage is vulnerable to new competition in its own way. As Cook has shown, a guy in the stands can have an edge over the big-name columnists in the press box.

Blogging? Well Maybe I Will
november 2008 by vielmetti
Blogging may not have been my first choice, but as I investigated options, it seemed the right way to go. I wanted to build a community in which people could find solace from their stressful day as a care giver. I envisioned my blog becoming an outlet for others and a way to record stories of loved ones with AD. I want my blog to turn into a community for those in need of finding assistance with their loved one with AD. This is the focus of my efforts - a place to share my ideas and hopefully get others involved in the conversation.

AOL Tells Angry Blogger Staff: Everything is Fantastic - ReadWriteWeb

AOL Senior VP of Programming Marty Moe held a conference call for all the bloggers in the Weblogs Inc. network this afternoon, a week after cutbacks and work slowdowns across the network put staff into a panic and shed a negative light on the business of blogging in general. Moe told staff that in fact, Weblogs Inc. is growing fast, seeing record traffic and consistent revenue growth.
