{have a nice} coffee time
This is Mike Jones. Formerly of The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI and currently of Comet Coffee in Ann Arbor, MI. He’s moving to NYC and I wanted to take a minute to thank him for his contribution to the coffee community here in Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor. His worst latte art is better than most baristas bests and he can dial in an espresso effortlessly. As much as it pisses me off, Mike has always given me a level of quality and expertise to aspire to, and I thank him for challenging me to always do better.

A New Debate on Blog Comments is Brewing
If you’ve been following the blogging and social media scene over the last five or more years, you know that there’s one heated debate that keeps on showing up: the debate about comments on blogs. Should blogs have comments? Should these comments be moderated? When has a comment gone too far? Judging from a couple of recent events, it’s once again time to rethink these issues.

Arbor Update: This site to be demolished, replaced with student housing
One thing that I think really helped keep the discussions going is the recent comments sidebar. It made it easy to know at a glance what people we’re talking about.

I humbly suggest that other news and discussion sites consider copying this (I can suggest this because I had no hand in developing it). I know it would make it easier for me to stay involved in discussions on the Chronicle, for example

Newspaper to bloggers: Shut up pipsqueaks! - The Future of Journalism - Open Salon
After lauding the journalistic might of the Plain Dealer's newsroom with a staff of 240, Didiun goes on to dismiss the the blogsphere, where Schultz has been taking a lot of heat from the likes of BuzzMachine's Jeff Jarvis, a journalism professor at the City University of New York.

"It's really a bunch of pipsqueaks out there talking about what the real journalists do," Didiun says. It sure sounds like the Plain Dealer's "reader rep" thinks that his paper's readers need to be protected from what the blogosphere has to say about what's being published in his newspaper.

10 Reasons Your Mother Is Unverified Voracity | mgoblog
Though I'm not entirely opposed to this style—witness this very post—most of the blog's popularity derives from columns titled things like "Teeth and Blood" and "You Were Killed By A Bear And I Am Sad" and 5000-word exegeses on half of a Michigan football game, which are neither search engine- or link-friendly. With some limited exceptions (like throwing the name of each committed recruit into the post title, and providing SEO-friendly headlines for actual news posts) my philosophy has been to make the content as good, and as difficult to replicate, as possible. (Evidently I feel a good, weird title goes a long way.) The cookie cutter is eschewed.

Blogs-on-Paper Idea Runs Out of Steam - Bits Blog - NYTimes.com
Not hilarious. It makes sense. Over 90% of Politico’s revenue comes from its print edition, even though it’s only distributed in D.C. The truth is, as the CFOs of both the NYTimes and WSJ will tell you, print advertising, on a CPM basis, generates 75x more revenue than Web ads.

echovar » Blog Archive » Real-Time Writing: A Transvaluation of All Values
As a story plays out across the Network, as new information is uncovered, the inputs are routed through the mixing board of the writer’s keyboard. A writer must now listen to how the whole jam is sounding— the writer is a player down in the groove with other players. As we learn to write through a real-time medium, we’ll need to look to the values, standards and practices of live performance. But these performances aren’t necessarily the traditional one-to-many events unfolding within a proscenium. We’ll need to dig into the performance theories of Richard Schechner and the Happenings of Allan Kaprow; revive the thoughts of Michael Kirby and The Art of Time, and the work of Fluxus. The journey from text on a page to hypertext on the Network is not a small adjustment to a business model; it’s a transvaluation of all values.

Detroit Make it Here | Blogging away the blight: Journalist starts a movement to remake Detroit neighborhood
Neighborhood blogs and social media are particularly important at a time when daily and weekly papers are cutting just about everything to stay afloat, Morgan said. Consider Gannett Co. Inc.’s recent decisions to close the Birmingham, West Bloomfield, Troy, Southfield and Rochester editions of the Observer & Eccentric Newspapers; and replace the Ann Arbor News with a smaller news organization, annarbor.com, with print editions only twice a week.

When you have kids, supper has to be on the table every night. And when you are a vegan, the drive-thru, the deli counter, and TV dinners/frozen convenience foods are not an option. So, you do the best you can. This blog is a record of what my family eats. It's not always a totally complete meal, not always photogenic, and sometimes it's leftovers. But, it is a realistic look at a vegan family in a northern Ontario city that is not always vegan-friendly.

Scott Rosenberg’s Wordyard » Blog Archive » Google Blog Search loses its bearings
The Google Blog Search results have generally been the fastest and most useful tool of this kind (Google displaced Technorati, which had long served in this role, some time ago). But a couple of months ago Google Blog Search started becoming pretty much useless. Instead of only reporting links from the “main” blog content, it reported all links on a blog page, including the so-called “sidebar” or blogroll, where many bloggers place a lengthy static list of blogs they read.

The State of Transit Routing - O'Reilly Radar
What's also interesting is the potential of these routing tools beyond actual specific individual routes. Taken in amalgamation the routing distances form a new topography of the space. Given a point in the city, how far can I travel in 20 minutes? in 40 minutes? for less than $1.75? This type of map is known as an isochrone. Tom Carden and MySociety developed London Travel Time Maps that allow users to highlight the spots in London given a range of house prices and travel times.

I Am a Slow Blog : Ruminate
Slow Blogging is in the air. And even slower blogging. I don’t know all the details of the Slow Blogging movement, nor have I had the pleasure of meeting Barbara Ganley (who has been championing the concept) to talk about it. But I’m quite aware of the slow blogging idea… not just from Barbara’s blog entries, but from serendipitously stumbling across other people who had independently developed similar ideas. I’ve had similar– though less fully explored– thoughts about blogs and blogging for some time, particularly after coming under the influence of a book I’ve since recommended to many people, Carl Honore’s In Praise of Slow .

Changing how fans follow Michigan football | The Michigan Daily
To put it simply, Cook’s website has become the place for Michigan football coverage. In just a few years, he has overthrown the ranks of professional journalists who cover the team, representing a drastic change in the culture of news coverage (in this case, the coverage of Michigan football), a change that most major newspapers have yet to adapt to. Traditional sports coverage is vulnerable to new competition in its own way. As Cook has shown, a guy in the stands can have an edge over the big-name columnists in the press box.

Perspectives - Jeff Dean on Google Infrastructure
Google does use lower quality hardware at a MUCH lower cost so, yes, they will see more hardware related failures. The two points that I find interesting are 1) hardware failures contribute the minority of outages -- software and administration are much bigger culprits, and 2) even VERY good hardware isn't good enough to avoid having to implement redundancy in software to mask failures. Once you have the reduncancy in software and can withstand hardware failures, why spend more to get good hardware?

Brownstoner: Real Estate Blogs "A Great Forum to Vent Anger"
The Wall Street Journal delves into the world of real estate blogs this morning, with a focus on their commenting culture, to see how they're faring as the housing crisis continues. "Thanks to the housing crisis, real-estate blogs are blooming not only in number, but in nastiness, as thousands of strangers swap stinging critiques of high-end homes hitting the market." The paper looks at the fallout from the jabs, citing one house seller who tuned in to Brownstoner and saw his property getting the royal treatment, from us and from the commenters, alike. "Readers quickly chimed in, citing overuse of track lighting and black granite and calling the border on the bathtub 'hideous' and the furniture 'cheesy,'" they write. "'They're probably hipsters — people who live really grungy,' counters Dr. Fernandez, noting that the bathroom tiles are handmade and the 'cheesy' furniture cost over $100,000."
