Mother Jones web traffic up 400+ percent, partly thanks to explainers » Nieman Journalism Lab » Pushing to the Future of Journalism
march 2011 by vielmetti
But Mother Jones also attributes the traffic explosion to a new kind of news content: its series of explainers detailing and unpacking the complexities of the situations in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, and Wisconsin. We wrote about MoJo’s Egypt explainer in January, pointing out the feature’s particular ability to accommodate disparate levels of reader background knowledge; that format, Adam Weinstein, a MoJo copy editor and blogger, told me, has become the standard one for the mag’s explainers. “It was a great resource for the reader, but it also helped us to focus our coverage,” Weinstein notes. “When something momentous happens, it can be hard for a small staff to focus their energies, I think. And this was an ideal way to do that.”

AnalyzeThe.US — Home
february 2011 by vielmetti
AnalyzeThe.US allows anyone to use Palantir to explore vast amounts of data only recently released into the public domain, including key datasets from www.data.gov. Information about key individuals, organizations, and activities exists in many places, and conducting meaningful analysis first requires the ability to integrate data seamlessly and completely. AnalyzeThe.US brings critical knowledge together on a single stage, while providing rich analytical applications that enable anyone to develop an intuitive picture of the complex flow of resources, money, and influence that affect how our government functions. Ultimately, by allowing citizens to analyze our democracy, AnalyzeThe.US democratizes analysis.

Optimization Online - Finding good nearly balanced cuts in power law graphs
december 2008 by vielmetti
Abstract: In power law graphs, cut quality varies inversely with cut balance. Using some million node social graphs as a test bed, we empirically investigate this property and its implications for graph partitioning. We use six algorithms, including Metis and MQI (state of the art methods for finding bisections and quotient cuts) and four relaxation/rounding methods. We find that an SDP relaxation avoids the Spectral method's tendency to break off tiny pieces of the graph. We also find that a flow-based rounding method works better than hyperplane rounding.

Google Gears Down for Tougher Times - WSJ.com
december 2008 by vielmetti
Google hired a new vice president of financial planning and analysis, Francois Delepine, who sought to standardize and more tightly manage the budget process. Finance teams started allocating more new hires to groups that generated the most revenue per head, say people familiar with the matter. To better predict revenue, the company implemented quotas for ad-sales representatives and tied the pay of more employees to performance, these people said. Different departments were required to budget the same amount for the same item, whether it was a server computer or a business-class ticket to Europe.

Joe Cothrel's Tumblr - Sounds like you have a community up and running...
november 2008 by vielmetti
Sounds like you have a community up and running and want to get others in the company more engaged. Three things I’d recommend:
* Harvest some customer opinions from the community and pass them around the organization — most people really want to hear what customers are saying.
* Communities are often one of the largest drivers of traffic to the company website — do some analysis on your site’s web traffic to show people how much traffic your community drives.
* Publish a weekly report that…

Official Google Research Blog: All Our N-gram are Belong to You
august 2008 by vielmetti
Here at Google Research we have been using word n-gram models for a variety of R&D projects, such as statistical machine translation, speech recognition, spelling correction, entity detection, information extraction, and others. While such models have usually been estimated from training corpora containing at most a few billion words, we have been harnessing the vast power of Google's datacenters and distributed processing infrastructure to process larger and larger training corpora. We found that there's no data like more data, and scaled up the size of our data by one order of magnitude, and then another, and then one more - resulting in a training corpus of one trillion words from public Web pages.
