From Skepticism to Citizen Journalism via a Tea Party « Emerging Technologies Librarian
I learned to mistrust the US popular press several years ago. A friend of mine is positioned high enough in the military to have a sense of the big picture and low enough to have a sense of what is going on in the lives of the “grunts”. It is an interesting point of view, and I have found little tidbits that cropped up in conversation to sometimes be wildly different from what was reported by our media. I learned to use the online resources and search engines available to access news media reports from around the world, and have also found that the richest information often comes not from the big name feeds but from the small town local press where the events unfolded. It is a natural extension of this to take a serious look at citizen journalism, the shift toward reporting major events and news from the viewpoint of the common person.

Ann Arbor-based Web hosting firm's eviction sends clients scrambling -
The eviction this week of a local Web hosting firm temporarily crippled the Web sites of several nonprofits and businesses.

IAS.net lost its office space in Swisher Commercial's Northern Brewery building on Jones Drive due to "chronic late-payment of rent," said Doug Smith, a Swisher Commercial agent.

Smith said his attorney advised him not to comment further. But IAS's Web site lists dozens of clients, including the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority, Eastern Michigan University Foundation, Zingerman's and Michigan Radio.

Is your subway system a platform? (Scripting News)
Does it have an API? Permalink to this paragraph

Funny thought perhaps, or maybe only in the Bay Area -- but our subway system -- BART, has an API. And it's kind of fun. I spent a couple of hours today hacking together an application, it's not all that useful, but one of these days something else will get an API that plugs in nicely and something interesting will happen.

Algonquin Round Table - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Algonquin Round Table was a celebrated group of New York City writers, critics, actors and wits. Gathering initially as part of a practical joke, members of "The Vicious Circle," as they dubbed themselves, gathered for lunch each day at the Algonquin Hotel from 1919 until roughly 1929. At these luncheons they engaged in wisecracks, wordplay and witticisms that, through the newspaper columns of Round Table members, were disseminated across the country.

Mermaid Tavern - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mermaid Tavern was a tavern on Cheapside in London during the Elizabethan era, located east of St. Paul's Cathedral on the corner of Friday Street and Bread Street. It was the site of the so-called Friday Street Club (the Tavern's entrance was on Friday Street). The Club, meeting monthly, was allegedly founded by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1603, and included some of the Elizabethan era's leading literary figures, among them Ben Jonson, John Donne, John Fletcher and Francis Beaumont, Thomas Coryat, John Selden, Robert Bruce Cotton, Richard Carew, and others—including, perhaps, William Shakespeare.

Florentine Camerata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Florentine Camerata was a group of humanists, musicians, poets and intellectuals in late Renaissance Florence who gathered under the patronage of Count Giovanni de' Bardi to discuss and guide trends in the arts, especially music and drama.[1][2] They met at the house of Giovanni de' Bardi, and their gatherings had the reputation of having all the most famous men of Florence as frequent guests.[3][4][5] The apex of influence for the Camerata was between 1577 and 1582, gaining influence before this time, and dying off afterward.[6]

Building a Bluetooth-enabled, Linux-controlled LED sign
This detailed book chapter describes how to add a Linux-based, Bluetooth-connected control interface to a scrolling LED sign. The 35-page chapter is excerpted from Make Projects: Small Form Factor PCs, a 232-page O'Reilly book featuring nine interesting and instructive embedded projects, many based on Linux.

(Click for larger view of book cover)

The Make Projects book was written by Duane Wessels and Matthew Weaver. Weaver works on small-form-factor access points and solar-powered servers, for a wireless ISP in Colorado. Wessels previously authored O'Reilly books on HTTP caching and on Squid, the open-source caching HTTP proxy server he co-developed and maintains.

Changing how fans follow Michigan football | The Michigan Daily
To put it simply, Cook’s website has become the place for Michigan football coverage. In just a few years, he has overthrown the ranks of professional journalists who cover the team, representing a drastic change in the culture of news coverage (in this case, the coverage of Michigan football), a change that most major newspapers have yet to adapt to. Traditional sports coverage is vulnerable to new competition in its own way. As Cook has shown, a guy in the stands can have an edge over the big-name columnists in the press box.

Stack's: Rare Coins For Sale: Numismatic Auctions
Dan Freidus's seminal paper on Higley coppers was published in the 1994 ANS Coinage of the Americas Conference on "The Token: America's Other Money." Therein, Friedus listed eight specimens of this die variety (including this piece). Of those eight coins, two are in museums, the British Museum and the Smithsonian Institution, and Eric Newman's is bound for one. Another had not been seen since 1918, leaving a collectible population of only four coins: the Garrett coin, the Robison coin, this coin, and a piece that was sold by Bowers and Ruddy in 1976 and was last seen in a Dana Linett auction in 1985. The Ford collection, long a mystery to Friedus, did not contain any specimens of this variety. The two Broad Axe Higleys in the Ford collection were both Friedus 3.3-C, struck from a different obverse die.

Chambered Nautilus: "Real" community becoming virtual
Its physical incarnation is now a weekly lunch, meeting every Thursday at the Eastern Accents restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor. Usually between 20 and 30 people attend the lunch. Some are regulars and some show up only occasionally. We range over many professions, ages, and lifestyles, but most of us have some connection with technology or the internet. We do a lot of informal "networking" as we eat our bi bim bap or stir fry or pork buns. Each week, the convener and originator of the group, Ed Vielmetti, asks us to introduce ourselves and to answer a question. The question might be as seemingly trivial as "what do you always carry with you?", or as thought provoking as "what is an important question in your field?" In this way, we come to know each other better.

The Penultimate Word » Vinyl
But I am rediscovering the joys of vinyl. My dad, who passed away in 2006, had an extensive collection of LPs and 78s. He was a classically trained organist and opera buff, so his collection was top-heavy with organ and opera recordings. But he had a number of other recordings as well, mostly classical, but also Broadway and jazz. My mom, looking to clean out her basement, told my siblings and me to take what we wanted and she would get rid of the rest.

Web post leads to a lawsuit - MLive.com
After executives at an Ann Arbor venture capital firm discovered an anonymous, negative Internet posting about the company, they weren't just mad: They decided to sue. In a court filing, EDF Ventures accused "John Doe'' of defamation for implying in a comment posted on the Web that the people running the firm were dishonest. The comment was made on a California-based Web site called The Funded, which was created to allow entrepreneurs to rate investors anonymously. The Web site's operator was served with a subpoena last week ordering the release of any records that might identify the poster.
