ELEMENTAL: Quinta Monroy
I've been looking for this for awhile - I think I saw it mentioned at the AA in London last time I was there. Anyway, delighted (and not particularly surprised) to see it turn up at Open Structures.

Curating the Open City
Via Rahul. "[T]he open city is not a specific place, it’s not a fixed entity. Rather, it’s a condition, usually found only in fragments, in parts of cities, where a fragile balance between integrating and disintegrating forces is maintained."

Here's my talk from dConstruct in Brighton a few weeks back. My goodness, I do go on. This is an absolutely sprawling talk! Check the tags for some idea of content.

Who Controls Data About Public Transportation?
Via Berkman, an interesting comparison of municipal attitudes toward transit data. (Broadly: East Coast cities see such data as IP to be, urgh, monetized; West Coast cities perhaps unsurprisingly treat it more like a public good.) Will want to start authoring legislation mandating that such data be held in the public trust and made freely and universally available for the common good of all.

c,mm,n: Open source mobility
I'm very much encouraged by the advent of community initiatives like this ("The Car Is Here For You To Use"?), but a little distressed that we're still talking about *cars*. Crawford, it seems, has had an impact on me.

MetaFilter: Help the police
"Republican politicians on Thursday called for a sweeping new federal law that would require all Internet providers and operators of millions of Wi-Fi access points, even hotels, local coffee shops, and home users, to keep records about users for two years to aid police investigations." Not even sure this could be implemented, let alone enforced; either way, awful precedent.

CloudMade Maps
Very nice. I love that the default tile for my Helsinki neighborhood pinpoints the location of bars.

Pasta&Vinegar: If as a citizen you can no longer fix your own car...
Nicolas is right in that this *is* a very important point, but it's certainly been made by a great many people. Vernor Vinge did a really good job underlining this, actually, in the otherwise not-great "Rainbow's End."

Verizon Opens Up Network to Outside Devices
Excellent. Do you think they can AT&T to do the same? Put another way: who needs "full service" when that really means "no service"?

NYT: Cellphone Straitjacket Is Inspiring a Rebellion
The NYT thinks it sees signs of a turn toward openness in the entrails. That may be significant in itself.
