Comments are Bad Business for Online Media — ANIMAL
7 weeks ago
But here’s the new thing: I’ve had two separate discussions with friends who run mid-sized internet properties–we’re talking high hundreds of thousands to millions of unique users a month–and they’ve both recently completed heavy analysis on their traffic and come to the somewhat shocking conclusion that the people who actually read comments are a small fraction of one percent of their entire readership.
I’m not talking about people who comment, which is an even smaller percentage. I’m talking about people who read comments, the supposed traffic-and-revenue generating nebulous “community” that supports nascent internet media publications and make all that engineering and moderator staffing worthwhile. Less than a percent. And if you measure the number of people who actually scroll to the end of a post and read all the comments, it’s even less.

Introducing TNW's Pay-to-View
Ever since The Next Web started taking the idea of digital publishing seriously, one of the things that we knew that we’d eventually run into was a question of how to monetize the content using something that was more effective than simple display advertising.
In the past year, we’ve seen exponential growth and a rise in our position on the Techmeme leaderboard to the point where a decision has to be made. So as of tomorrow, we’re going to introduce a way for TNW’s most loyal readers to be rewarded, while making sure that the casual, passing glancers stay happy too.
Beginning at 12:01 AM GMT, when you visit TNW you’ll see an option to join TNW Pay-to-View. For the first month, the subscription will cost you a mere $0.25, but then a tiered system will go into place in May:
1 – 3 articles per day: $1 per month
4-10 articles per day: $3 per month
Unlimited articles: $5 per month
For those choosing to subscribe to Pay-To-View, we’re going to make it very easy. You’ll pay for 1 year up front, and we’ll automatically renew your subscription for you. If you don’t want to renew, just give us 90 days written notice, mailed to The Next Web offices in Amsterdam, and we’ll be happy to arrange alternate options for you personally.

An Example of Photography on the Retina Display - Duncan Davidson
10 weeks ago
Last night a group of tweeps, including Steve Streza, collaborated with me to track down a limit in WebKit on the iPad when working with large JPEG files. After reverse engineering the limits and then later being pointed to the documentation about the limits, somebody suggested using a progressive JPEG file based on the observation that the large iPad hero image Apple uses is a progressive JPEG. I’ve not used progressive JPEGs in years, but following that suggestion, I gave it a shot. Lo and behold, it’s indeed the ticket to large JPEG joy on the iPad Retina display.

3.1 Million Pixels Are Heavy
To accommodate the iPhone and iPad, the magazine created a new cut size, up to 768x1024. But now they'll have to consider adding at least another cut size, perhaps several. Some of this work can be automated, sure, but in many cases, adding new sizes means adding new crops, and that's necessarily manual editorial work. So the growing variety and size of screen resolutions means more work, more disk space, more database management.
