Printers’ Marks [Gutenberg]
"SHORN of all the romance and glamour which seem inevitably to surround every early phase of typographic art, a Printer’s Device may be described as nothing more or less than a trade mark. It is usually a sufficient proof that the book in which it occurs is the work of a particular craftsman. Its origin is essentially unromantic, and its employment, in the earlier stages of its history at all events, was merely an attempt to prevent the inevitable pirate from reaping where he had not sown. At one time a copy, or more correctly a forgery, of a Printer’s Mark could be detected with comparative ease, even if the body of the book had all the appearance of genuineness."

The Art of the Letter: What we can learn from illustrated letters in the collections
"What can I possibly say!!?!?"<br />
<br />
Thus begins a 1965 letter from comedian Joan Rivers to future New York Times theater critic Mel Gussow. In the letter, located in Gussow's archive at the Ransom Center, Rivers thanks Gussow profusely for publishing an article about her at such a formative point in her career. Rivers closes the letter: "To say 'thank you very, very much' sounds so trite but I really mean it—I'm floating on air." Then, when words don't suffice, Rivers lets a picture take over: a hand-drawn stick figure of herself literally floating on air, beaming atop a cloud.

Sitting is Killing You
"As we enter the second decade of the 21st century, there is one thing nearly all modern Americans have in common: we sit all the time. Though our great shift towards computer-based work has done great things for productivity, it has, unfortunately, done terrible things for our health. From increased risk of heart disease and obesity in the long term, to sharply hampered cholesterol maintenance in the short term, the negative health effects of sitting are starting to weigh heavily against the benefits. Even the medical field – the greatest advocates and reducing sitting time– is plagued by this new health issue. Though doctors and nurses get plenty of walking time, it usually falls to the secretaries, billers, and coders to do all the sitting. And, as we can see, something has to change."

BLDGBLOG: Ruin, Space, and Shadow: An Interview with Mike Mignola
"The buildings, terrains, and spaces Mignola's plots take place within are equally extraordinary: there are remote, factory-like castles north of the Arctic Circle, wired floor-to-ceiling with arcane laboratory equipment; maritime plagues and New England shipwrecks; intelligent geological formations in space, larger than planets, signaling down to Army radar stations at the end of World War II; abandoned mines and ruined churches; Mayan fragments mounted on the luxurious, candlelit walls of Alpine mansions; Nazi conspiracies and fallen astronauts; derelict Victorian houses wrapped in fog on the coastal moor. Michael Sporn Animation - Splog > Ronald Searle in Cartoonist Profiles
The following article, and the accompanying 'ideas chart', were written
for CARTOONIST PROfiles by RONALD SEARLE, the noted European cartoonist
who makes his headquarters in Paris. He created St. Trin-ian's, which
has become a part of English folklore, has illustrated more than 40
books in the past 23 years, has designed sets and costumes for films,
made his own cartoon film John Gilpin', and constantly does work for
American, French and German magazines. One of his publishers describes
him as Europe's most accomplished cartoonist - a macabre black
humourist, a lynx-eyed reporter, a gagman of genius, a draughtsman of
the stammering line and the delirious arabesque that inimitably
characterises his world.

Flip Flop Flyin' - Much fuck it's drawing
"Just a bunch of drawings done using the Brushes application on the iPhone/iPod touch. There's no plan or narrative, just drawing for the sake of it. And there's more or less no editiing; unless something is really crappy, it'll appear here, like a sketchbook. Rather than giving this section a prosaic title that overly promotes Apple products, like "iPhone drawings," I borrowed a phrase that came as the entire body text in an email from a Japanese visitor regarding my Shakse drawings. I assume it was a compliment. Sadly, I forget his/her name, but the phrase has stuck in my mind for several years."

Dreamers Rise: Japanese Katazome Calendars
"When they were given to me a number of years ago, the prints were accompanied by a photocopied page that says, in part, "the Artist for this calendar for 1971 is Mr. Takeshi Nishijima, Professor of Art at Kyoto University. A graphic and textile designer, he has exhibited in numerous one man shows and won the coveted Grand Prize at the Kyoto Art Exhibit." As far as I can tell, however, none of the above examples are from 1971, and thus far I've found very little information on Takeshi Nishijima." Ha, sounds like the middle of a Murakami story.
