Ina May Gaskin and the Battle for at-Home Births - NYTimes.com
One Monday morning last spring, Ina May Gaskin got into her golf cart and drove it down the dirt road away from her home on the Farm, a community of 175 residents on a former commune in rural Tennessee that her husband started in the 1970s. She pulled up to the community center, where she would be teaching a class on delivering breech babies. The class was part of a weeklong seminar Gaskin and her fellow midwives were offering to an eclectic group: nurse-midwifery students attending for college credit; a Boston-area family-practice doctor; midwives from around the country; and one, from Australia, who went by the one-word moniker Macca. They had traveled to this corner of southern Tennessee to learn from the founding mother of the natural-birth movement.

Feminisnt » The most beautiful photos you'll see today: 70s queer resistance in prison
These photos are from the book "Concrete Mama: Prison Profiles From Walla Walla" that came out in the early 80's. It's really great, but rare and hard to find. There are some on Amazon but they're kinda spendy. There's a whole chapter and set of photos (these included) about political prisoners and Ed Mead. Also a ton about transvestites behind the walls. Buy it if you can afford it. I believe John Mccoy took these photos.

Tristan Taormino to Debut 'The Feminist Porn Show' - XBIZ.com
Sex educator and pornographer Tristan Taormino will be the host at the U.S. debut of "The Feminist Porn Show” sponsored by the She Bop female-friendly sex boutique in Portland on June 5.

Show organizers said the event, to be held at the Mississippi Studios, will showcase feminist porn's growing movement.

Taormino will introduce the audience to the concept of feminist porn and discuss its history, along with a screening of selected short clips from filmmakers around the world.

Taormino told XBIZ, “I think it's [feminist porn] gaining serious momentum. The Feminist Porn Awards in Toronto were bigger and more sophisticated this year than ever before. There are new filmmakers on the scene and there is a sense of community among the directors, producers, performers, retailers and fans who support feminist porn.”

The clip show features the work of both pioneers and newcomers, including Fatale Video, Candida Royalle, Annie Sprinkle, Nina Hartley, Jackie Strano and Shar Rednour, Petra Joy, Erika Lust, Shine Louise Houston, Anna Brownfield, Carlos Batts, N. Maxwell Lander, Emilie Jouvet, Louise Lush, Jaiya, Maria Beatty, Buck Angel, Madison Young, Courtney Trouble, Morty Diamond, Tobi Hill-Meyer, Kelly Shibari, Loree Erickson and more.

The screenings will be followed by a discussion exploring current issues surrounding feminist porn.

“Tristan Taormino is a leader in the growing feminist porn movement, and the show she has put together is fantastic. We are so thrilled to bring her to Portland for its U.S. debut. We know people will find it inspiring, thought-provoking, and very sexy,” Evy Cowan, co-owner of She Bop said.

A pre-show featuring a sexy performance by Felice Shays will also be presented.

DVDs from the featured filmmakers and Taormino will be on sale. The host will also be available for signings.

A show after party is also scheduled at the adjoining Bar Bar.

Tickets are $25 and available at She Bop, 909 N. Beech Street, at Mississippi Studios, 3939 N. Mississippi, ($1 box office fee), or online via Ticket Biscuit ($4.40 service charge).

One perfect day in Irvine, CA - Page 2 - Sunset.com
While you're in Irvine: 3 under-the-radar spots worth a stop

Not your average mall: Things you must do at pan-Asian strip mall Diamond Jamboree:

Get a milk pudding, a soft custard-filled pastry, at 85º C, SoCal’s best Taiwanese bakery.
Eat a “shaved snow” dessert at the Balcony Grill & Bar (we like #6, with strawberries and mango).
Stroll the seaweed aisle at supermarket emporium H Mart, then check out the 37 kinds of rice stacked in 20- to 25-pound bags. 2700–2750 Alton Pkwy.; diamond-jamboree.com
Something old, something new: Yes, there’s something old in Irvine: the original Irvine Ranch, dating to the late 1800s. It’s now Irvine Ranch Historic Park, with a public library that’s a gleaming white replica of the main house. The palm allée, orange trees, and wooden buildings all exude a relaxed old-SoCal charm.

For the kids but cool for you: Pretend City Children’s Museum touts its mission to educate kids—but educational, schmeducational. Pretending to live in this mock-up town (building houses, playing doctor, singing on the stage, or picking fruit at the farm and selling it to the grocery store) is good old-fashioned fun. $11; pretendcity.org

Europe's Early Man Drew Female Sex Organs, Animals : Discovery News
And so began the age-old debate: is it art, or pornography?

White and his international team analyzed the engravings, which were made with ochre on a 3,307-pound block of limestone found in a rock shelter occupied by a group of Aurignacian reindeer hunters. The researchers believe the limestone was once the shelter’s low ceiling, which later collapsed.

The engravings include depictions of “the back end of a horse,” according to the researchers, as well as multiple images of the female vulva. Other “zoomorphic” and “geometric” engravings are included, along with additional images of female sexual organs.

Unlike the Chauvet paintings and engravings, which are deep underground and away from living areas, “the engravings and paintings at Castanet are directly associated with everyday life, given their proximity to tools, fireplaces, bone and antler tool production, and ornament workshops,” White said.

The discovery in many respects leads to more questions than answers, given the subject matter of the artwork.

“While there are animal figures, the dominant motif is that considered to represent abstract female vulvas,” White said, mentioning that other interpretations could be possible.

Additional Aurignacian artwork, however, clearly represents female sexual organs. The Venus of Hohle Fels, for example, is an ivory figurine dating to at least 35,000 to 40,000 years ago, according to Nicholas Conard, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Tübingen who reported the find.

The figurine, found in a southwestern Germany cave, depicts a woman with what Conard told Discovery News were “large projecting breasts” and a pronounced vulva and labia majora visible between the woman’s open legs.

Pam seeks millionaire and says: I’m ready to lose my virginity at 70 | The Sun |News
Cabaret singer Pam Shaw said she has always been too busy working to find a man.

And even though she sings under the saucy name The Sexational Pam — and has rubbed shoulders over the years with sex symbols of the time like Tom Jones and Roger Moore — she has never hopped between the sheets.

Pam explained she does not believe in sex before marriage. And as she has stayed single there was no question of losing her virginity.

Autostraddle — Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls: Role Models, Riot Grrrls and Revolutions
I really want to live in a reality where every girl has the opportunity to go to a Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls, or at least has an experience where she feels completely accepted, has positive role models and gets to meet Carrie Brownstein. Sometimes I try to imagine an alternate reality where I never went to camp, and I see a life full of crash diets, being afraid to leave my apartment and hating my queer self. Maybe that's an exaggeration, and I could have figured things out on my own eventually, but I know Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls had a huge impact on who I am today. As an adult I've volunteered and given money, and I tell every girl I meet she should go. I figure it's an investment in the future, because of course I want a future where all women are strong and confident and know how to rock out, or at least scream really loud.

THIS POST IS PART OF OUR EXTENDED COVERAGE OF ROCK N' ROLL CAMP FOR GIRLS!
Special Note: Autostraddle's "First Person" column exists for individual queer ladies to tell their own personal stories and share compelling experiences. These personal essays do not reflect the ideals of Autostraddle or its editors, nor do any First Person writers intend to speak on behalf of anyone other than themselves. First Person writers are simply speaking honestly from their own hearts.
