The youth club he established in his home village of West Lavington meant more to actor George Baker than his entire theatrical career, his daughter said after unveiling a plaque in his name on Saturday.

West Lavington club honours George Baker
The youth club set up by the late actor George Baker is to be named in his honour.

Mr Baker’s daughter, Sarah Pearson, who lives locally, is to unveil the plaque at the youth club building in West Lavington at noon on Saturday, after which it will be known as the George Baker Youth Centre.

A tree will also be planted in Mr Baker’s memory.

THE late actor George Baker had a key role in the Theatre Royal’s rebirth.

Mr Baker, who died on October 7, gained recent fame as television’s Chief Inspector Wexford. But from 1965 he acted with and managed the Candida Plays touring company based at the Bury St Edmunds Regency theatre, which had just reopened after 40 years as Greene King’s barrel store.

Were anyone to get around to doing a screen biography of Stanley Baldwin, the quintessential Tory prime minister who handled the Abdication Crisis, then George is your man. He's Captain Mainwaring of Dad's Army without the pomposity or his capacity for losing his dignity.
