On Monday 26th April, Baroness Ruth Rendell of Babergh, C.B.E presented the Ruth Rendell Short Story Competition Award at the October Gallery in Bloomsbury, London, a competition conducted by the award winning charity InterAct Reading Service.

Lord Melvyn Bragg, Ruth Rendell, Joe Orton, Iris Murdoch and HE Bates are among the novelists in the running for a special Lost Man Booker Prize - for works published in 1970 which "fell through the net".

Iris Murdoch's "A Fairly Honourable Defeat" is up against 21 other works, including "The Fire Dwellers" by Margaret Laurence, Len Deighton's "Bomber," ''A Guilty Thing Surprised," by Ruth Rendell, and "A Clubbable Woman," by Reginald Hill.

Val McDermid, "the queen of the psychological thriller", has won the Cartier Diamond Dagger award, which honours outstanding achievement in the field of crime writing.

The Crime Writers Association (CWA), Cactus TV, ITV3 and opticians Specsavers have teamed up to celebrate the Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards 2009, which will take place on 21st October 2009.

The Crime Writers’ Association is delighted to announce the shortlists for a number of this year’s Daggers — the prestigious awards that celebrate the very best in crime and thriller writing in 2009. When nominations closed on 17 April, 988 entries had been put forward for the seven daggers in contention this year.

Kenneth Branagh has won the prize for best actor at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards (BPG) for his performance in the BBC drama Wallander.

Crime queen PD James will accept the first Honorary Fellowship of the festival at a special dinner attended by the Duke of Kent.

The dagger is awarded to a writer nominated by library users and chosen by a panel of librarians. Closing date for entries is 11th April 2009. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Crime Writers Association's website or found in libraries.

Dame Helen announces that the winner is . . . Colin Dexter. Colin, of course, can’t be there, so relays his delight by video, ensuring the whole thing ends up as dead as a Morse character played by a bit-part actor.

The winners of the inaugural ITV3 Crime Thriller Awards were revealed at a ceremony on Friday night (3rd October), with authors including P D James and Ian Rankin winning prizes.
