The Conspirators – Orange Tree Theatre - The Good Review
september 2011
The play is driven by an engine of older actors, all of whom have wonderful moments to shine. Christopher Ravenscroft’s, reasonable and ideologically superior Prosecutor is perhaps the highlight, he embodies a weariness and dissatisfaction which was wonderfully engaging.

Ultimately, Havel’s warning/message seems to be, as with the pre-Hitler Weimar Republic, democracy’s extreme vulnerability - be it due to personal agendas, misanthropic malevolence or even cool legal calculation as embodied in Christopher Ravenscroft’s superb State Prosecutor, himself not adverse to a spot of spanking. Would you trust democracy in these hands? Hardly.

Vault, By Ruth Rendell - Reviews, Books - The Independent
august 2011
Ruth Rendell is bidding fair to join Defoe and Dickens in creating one of the great criminal cities of literature. Her view of London is a similar murderous topography, less squalid, but with the same tentacles reaching out between rich and poor. The mapping of this novel began over a decade ago with the publication of her A Sight for Sore Eyes, which featured "Orcadia Cottage", a charming old house in St. John's Wood painted by a well-known artist as a backdrop for his portraits of a devoted young couple.

A hatful of facts about... P.D. James
august 2011
James has been publishing for fifty years. Her first novel, Cover Her Face, appeared in 1962. Her most recent work, the non-fiction book Talking About Detective Fiction, was published in 2009. Speaking recently to the BBC, James hinted that she was working on something new: 'I am still writing, but something very different; something shorter and something which I'm keeping very secret at the moment.' She later admitted that it did not feature her long-time detective, Adam Dalgliesh.

The Vault by Ruth Rendell - review
august 2011
Wexford, a devoted grandfather who sends his very first email here, is the antithesis of the artistic and autistic Teddy Brex, the creepy student protagonist of A Sight for Sore Eyes. The Vault, as a sort-of-sequel, is a bold attempt to combine Rendell's two chosen specialities: the police procedural and the psychological thriller.

Further on crime novels
july 2011
I was going to go off on one about how Ruth Rendell is FLAWLESS but then I remembered that she has got a flaw, which just comes of her age: she can’t incorporate the Internet convincingly into her recent stories. She is just not used to a world in which characters could find out information about each other, or about any topic they can think of, through Google, so they go ages not knowing things that real people nowadays would have found out within minutes.

july 2011
Ruth Rendell has probably pulled more surprises on her readers than any other crime writer. But the one she produces with her latest novel is a little unusual even by her standards. Set in the present, The Vault (Hutchinson, £18.99) deals with the discovery of four corpses in the disused coal hole of a Georgian cottage in St John’s Wood. The main investigator is Rendell’s long-running series hero, Chief Inspector Wexford, now retired and living part-time in Hampstead.

But who, pray, is Detective Chief Inspector Reginald Wexford, and where on earth is Kings Markham? These answers will be found on Arts & Entertainment tomorrow night at 10, when the first hour of a three-part dramatization of Ruth Rendell's ''Shake Hands Forever'' is presented on the cable network's new ''Masters of Mystery'' series. (The subsequent episodes will be shown Feb. 12 and 19, in the same Monday-night slot.) ''Surely you Americans have heard of Wexford,'' Miss Rendell said, sounding slightly aghast in a recent telephone conversation from her home in the Suffolk district of England.

Harrogate Crime Writing Festival - Telegraph
july 2011
What better way to start my trip to this year's Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival than a chat with the grande dame of the genre, PD James? Particularly as the festival's bucolic Harrogate setting seems to have put her in a murderous mood. "This would be a wonderful setting for a murder," she enthuses as we admire the hotel gardens. "The contrast between the beauty, the peace, the tranquillity and the appalling crime, that would be very effective."
