encryption is (mostly) not magic | Benlog
For the most part, encryption isn’t magic. Encryption lets you manage secrets more securely, but if users are involved in the key management, that almost certainly comes at the expense of usability and features. Web services should strongly consider encryption where possible to more strictly manage their internal access controls. But think carefully before embarking on a design that forces users to manage their keys. In many cases, users simply don’t understand that losing the key means losing the data. As my colleague Umesh Shankar says, if you design a car lock so secure that locking yourself out means crushing the car and buying a new one, you’re probably doing it wrong.

ongoing by Tim Bray · Three Mobile-Software Rules
These days, I spend quite a bit of time talking about how to write software for Android. I think three of the general rules are worth expanding on here because I’m increasingly convinced they apply to software in general, not just for mobile devices.

The design of a signage typeface | I love typography, the typography and fonts blog
I was unable to fully answer those questions, but felt that I must find the answers, no matter what the cost. Back in Europe I began studying the typefaces on road signs just about everywhere the Latin script is used. But looking at photos or signage specifications doesn’t reveal much about the actual performance of those typefaces. So I set off, driving thousands of miles across Europe to explore the legibility of these signs and typefaces, first hand. Once I even ended up in a holding cell at the border crossing to Norway, because the customs officers just wouldn’t accept that someone would drive all over Europe simply to take photographs of traffic signs.

zomigi.com » Why browser zoom shouldn’t kill flexible layouts
"Now that all the major browsers include the ability to zoom the entire page layout, rather than just increase text size, are liquid and elastic layouts obsolete? Can’t we just use fixed-width layouts and let the user zoom them if needed? The answer to that question depends on whether browser zoom solves all of the same problems than liquid and elastic layouts solve, and I don’t think it does."
