An Ajax-Include Pattern for Modular Content | Filament Group, Inc., Boston, MA
In order to lazy load nonessential content on BostonGlobe.com without introducing access barriers, we developed a simple, markup-driven “Ajax-include” pattern that enhanced certain links on a page by including a fragment of content from a URL related to their linked resource. For example, the header of BostonGlobe.com contained a link to the Weather section of the website, and that same link is also used as a marker for including a fragment of content from that section that is used to create a weather widget.

When is a website not a website? For Talking Points Memo, the turning point was in 2012 » Nieman Journalism Lab
“If someone were to ask me a year ago, I would have said, ‘Well, yeah, we’re not just a website — it’s this, and we have that, and the other.’ But I think it was when I saw mobile growing as fast as it was that it just sort of hit me at a different level,” Marshall told me. “Inevitably, as long as mobile was something like five percent of traffic, it was just something you made available on the side. But you start to see, this is going to be half of our audience. We can’t be approaching it in a way that the website is the thing, and we’re making imitations of it — because this thing is losing its primacy. In a lot of ways, it wasn’t until late last year that it hit me at a different level. It hit me as more than a concept. It was really true.”

Android fragmentation: one developer encounters 3,997 devices | Ars Technica
One developer can do business with nearly 4,000 distinct Android ROMs, according to data posted by the creators of OpenSignalMaps on Tuesday. While the Android platform provides a lot of flexibility to consumers, OpenSignalMaps' data drives home the point that the small army of device variations can be staggering. Market developers can miss out on a lot by not supporting less popular or older devices.

ongoing by Tim Bray · Three Mobile-Software Rules
These days, I spend quite a bit of time talking about how to write software for Android. I think three of the general rules are worth expanding on here because I’m increasingly convinced they apply to software in general, not just for mobile devices.

Opera Developer News - How media queries allow you to optimize SVG icons for several sizes
One thing that seems to come up from time to time when talking about SVG is the apparent lack of a mechanism to make certain size specific adjustments. Typical use case is icon design, where you want to make sure the outline of the icon you're creating is always 1px, regardless of the icon being 16, 32 or 64 pixels in size. While at the SVG Open conference last week, I investigated how this problem could be solved, and found out that you can do this by using media queries inside the SVG file. Different widths set on the img tag pointing to the SVG file then will trigger different max-width/min-width media queries to be triggered. I've presented my findings during the lightning talks session at SVG Open, and have turned the talk into a YouTube video, which you can watch below.

Designers respond to Nielsen on mobile | News | .net magazine
McGrane also noted the problems faced by users arriving from search engines: "If you're only delivering a subset of content and features on your mobile site, redirecting users to the mobile URL can cause huge problems. This scenario happens all the time: the user searches for something on Google from her phone, and finds the content she's looking for. Tapping the link in search results takes her to the mobile site, but because that content doesn't exist on mobile, she gets dumped on the mobile homepage. Sure, she can link to the full desktop site, but she winds up on the homepage there too. She knows the content exists, she just can't get to it anymore. Redirecting to the mobile URL breaks Google search. How is that ever a good user experience?"

Why Mobile Web Matters | NPR Digital Services
For many public media stations, mobile means one thing: apps. We all know mobile is important, and many stations have launched successful mobile apps that engage your audience with audio, news, and more.

But here’s the truth: If your app is the only component of your mobile strategy, you’re missing the boat. Mobile-optimized web pages are rapidly becoming the most important way to grow your online audience.

How to work around the Mobile Safari image resource limit
Because of the memory available on an iPad or iPhone, Mobile Safari has much stricter resource limits than most desktop browsers.

One of these limits is the total amount of image data that can be loaded on a single HTML page. When Mobile Safari has loaded between 8 to 10 MB of image data it will simply stop displaying any more images. It might even crash.

Hear! Hear! the WURFL Cloud is finally here!
WURFL has represented the de-facto Device Description Repository for 10 years. It predated virtually all initiatives in the DDR space, be they commercial or driven by some standard body. Many have asked about the availability of a WURFL Cloud over the years. The advent of ScientiaMobile has made this possible.

Mobile First Design: Why It’s Great and Why It Sucks | Design Shack
The reality of the situation is a little more complex though. When you start with the desktop platform, you tend want to take advantage of everything that platform has to offer. You build an amazing product that leverages lots of great technology, only to realize that none of it scales well down to mobile. This can and does lead to severely watered down mobile products that feel more like an afterthought than a polished, finished product. Does this happen with every project? Perhaps not, but the story is likely far more common than you’d like to believe.
