Rhizome | Screen. Image. Text.
"We hoped that this page metaphor would underline our relationship the kind of serious content more associated with printed media—to (as we’ve often stated) ‘slow down the internet.’" –– have you considered that maybe the problem is your "relationship with serious content" ?

worth reading, full of face-palming and occasional rage-making. also, the short version appears to be "papernet"...

"A hybrid model of print-to-screen-and-back-again might teach us much about our relationship with images, which will define and shape the history of art and the way it is taught and written about in coming years. This might just be the equivalent of the possibility to run up or down the escalator in the opposite direction than it is heading. It’s possible, even if exhausting. But sometimes, you just want to stand there on the escalator and see the ground distance itself from you while you take in the view."

Infovore » A Year of Links
"Yes, there’s also a QR code. Stop having a knee-jerk reaction right now and think carefully. Some of those URLs are quite long, and one day, Pinboard might not exist to click on them from. Do you want to type them in by hand? No, you don’t, so you may as well use a visual encoding that you can scan with a phone in the kind of environment you’d read this book: at home, in good lighting. It is not the same as trying to scan marketing nonsense on the tube."

wkpdf — a command line HTML to PDF converter for Mac OS X
"wkpdf is a command line tool for rendering HTML to PDF using WebKit and RubyCocoa on Mac OS X.

Although there are plenty of browsers available for Mac OS X, I could not find a command-line tool that allows for downloading a website and storing the rendered website as PDF. This was my motivation for creating wkpdf. The application uses Apple WebKit for rendering the HTML pages, thus the result should look similar to what you get when printing the webpage with Safari.

Since wkpdf is based on the state-of-the-art WebKit HTML rendering framework, it provides high-quality web standard compliant HTML rendering with support for advanced CSS2/CSS3 styling."

Sign Of The Times: Safety Maps Help You Plan For Catastrophe | Co.Design: business + innovation + design
""The word you’re definitely looking for is 'Papernet’, coined by Aaron Cope in 2007," says Migurski. "The Papernet is a closing of the loop between the digital and the physical, and owns up to the fact that our most durable everyday storage medium is also our easiest technology to read and write." Resilience and fragility. Even as paper is displaced as the medium of choice, it adapts and endures."

"I decided to take all the blog posts, Twitter messages, and Flickr images I made this year, combine them, typeset them, and then get it printed in a hard-bound book. I wrote a bit about the reasoning here.

There was a lot of poking a pawing at the scripts I used to create the final product so I thought I'd share them in case someone else could get some use out of them.

Big warning: these are mostly worthless until you change them to fit your project. While all the code here works, and it ended up giving me a decent-looking book, you'll need to modify it, which is mostly the point. This is your retrospective and thus shouldn't be a cookie-cutter running of the code I wrote (if that would even work)."

UrbanTick: Book - Studies in Temporal Urbanism
I would like nothing more than to purchase this book but it is a lesson in doing everything you can imagine to prevent me from doing so. From the outrageous price of the printed version to the insanely bad "web" version (it's like a WMS map for books if you can imagine the horror) to the even more offensively priced PDF versions of individual chapters. Springer Publishing, I'm sure you're lovely to have a drink with but you deserve to FAIL.

Concrete Words
"I don't have any visions of grandeur that what's in my book is going to interest anyone but myself, and it will likely never be in a museum, but it's an assemblage of atoms that's going to be on my bookshelf, and will probably outlast me. That's a completely different feeling than pushing some bits from my phone or laptop to some hard drive in a distant data center that I then have to use a computer to look at again.

And unlike a computer, a book is a self-contained thing. Where my browser will load everything from pictures my friends upload, to emails sent to my landlord, to the daily news, a book is made of its pages, and that's it. When I pick up a novel, I know I'm getting an unbroken experience of reading just one story. So I'm taking what would normally live beside everything the Internet has to offer, and putting it in its own chunk of dedicated space."

How can I digitize my old slides? | 1000memories
"Our slides have plenty of wonderful memories that are unfortunately locked in an obsolete medium. Of course you can send them away to get them digitized but we've discovered a quick and low-cost way of doing it yourself with a scanner. The New Value of Text | booktwo.org
"Text lasts. It’s not platform-dependant, you don’t just get it from one source, read it in one place, understand it in one way. It is not dependent on technology: it is what we make technology out of. Code is text, it is the fundamental nature of technology. We’ve been trying for decades, since the advent of hypertext fiction, of media-rich CD-ROMs, to enhance the experience of literature with multimedia. And it has failed, every time."

Missing Maps and the Fragility of Digital Information - O'Reilly Radar

Passwords and Paper Printouts: Preserving the Electronic Records of the Devra Kleiman Papers | The Bigger Picture
"Kleiman was a prodigious note-taker—nearly every one of her discs has a label or note with some information about what’s on it. My favorite example:  a 3.5” floppy disk that was corrupted and on which most files could not be read. But after looking at the label and exploring the paper records that were in the same folder, I chanced upon a “Disk Directory” that listed what files were on the disk in question, as well as print outs of the WordStar and Lotus 123 files it contained. Though we can only assume that this inventory is accurate, at least we know what is likely to be on this disk, which may aid in efforts to read the disk in the future."

unpaper
"unpaper is a post-processing tool for scanned sheets of paper, especially for book pages that have been scanned from previously created photocopies. The main purpose is to make scanned book pages better readable on screen after conversion to PDF. Additionally, unpaper might be useful to enhance the quality of scanned pages before performing optical character recognition (OCR). unpaper tries to clean scanned images by removing dark edges that appeared through scanning or copying on areas outside the actual page content (e.g. dark areas between the left-hand-side and the right-hand-side of a double- sided book-page scan). The program also tries to detect disaligned centering and rotation of pages and will automatically straighten each page by rotating it to the correct angle. This process is called "deskewing". Note that the automatic processing will sometimes fail. It is always a good idea to manually control the results of unpaper and adjust the parameter settings according to the requirements of the input. Each processing step can also be disabled individually for each sheet. Input and output files can be in either .pbm , .pgm or .ppm format, thus generally in .pnm format, as also used by the Linux scanning tools scanimage and scanadf. Conversion to PDF can e.g. be achieved with the Linux tools pgm2tiff, tiffcp and tiff2pdf."

cityofsound: Linked Hybrid by Steven Holl Architects, and designing for the occupation of space in contemporary Beijing
"Given that the "mechanism of the host country" here isn't particularly geared in this way, the next morning, I decided to use a prop to overcome the gulf in language between Beijing’s taxi drivers and me. Pouncing on Linked Hybrid’s distinctive form, I quickly sketched out its shape on a bit of paper and showed it to the driver. The driver was relatively old—though you never know here; he had the kind of skin that looked as if it was aged by the conditions of Beijing rather than the natural passage of time—but good-natured with it, and though he looked utterly bewildered by the scribble, he shrugged and decided to give it a go."

colophon
"This notebook was created by Blaine Cook and Maureen Evans for the occasion of South By Southwest, 2011. We've stood tall on the shoulders of giants. The idea is stolen wholesale from the fine James Bridle, who constructed a notebook for the event held in 2010.

The maps were made possible by a group of esteemed friends from San Francisco. ModestMaps.py was used extensively to render the maps from dynamic sources, and is awesome. Thanks, Mike. Thmike. The maps themselves are OpenStreetMaps cum Cloudmade, which are great services if you have maps to design.

Really, though, the shining star, our Space Claw, is Aaron Straup-Cope, whose tireless work on creating little guidebooks of joy was the cornerstone of our mapwork. Straup, we hardly touched your opus; the best is yet to come. Oh, and Prettymaps, used for the cover, are fucking rad and beautiful, don't you agree? Aaron++

One more thing: the whole damn thing is HTML and images over HTTP. We don't need no stinkin' photoshop. Thanks, wkhtmltopdf. Thwkhtmltopdf. One day you'll be all grown up and make us proud. Damn proud."
