yboss - a JavaScript wrapper for Yahoo's BOSS API
december 2008 by soypunk
"BOSS gives you a lot of power and comes with a lot of options, but most of the time all you want to do is to do a simple search, get some information back and display it. This is exactly what this wrapper library does and it is built purely in JavaScript with no server-side dependencies."

Random Sampling from a Search Engine's Index (application/pdf Object)
september 2008 by soypunk
"We revisit a problem introduced by Bharat and Broder almost a decade ago: how to sample random pages from a search engine’s index using only the search engine’s public interface? Such a primitive is particularly useful in creating objective benchmarks for search engines."

Ask Kids
august 2008 by soypunk
The search engine result page seems pretty well done. I did searches for all the major US presidents and each page was a decent starting point as a reference search. (Also helped you to disambiguate popular terms like "lincoln"...) I'm not sure about the overall desgin bits... but I'll assume this went through a fair bit of user (read: kid) testing.

Long Tails and Short Queries - Boxes and Arrows: The design behind the design
june 2008 by soypunk
However, looking at more recent data from Vivisimo and Dogpile, most web queries are still short—2 to 3 terms, and sessions include little query modification and are generally 2-3 queries in length.
