appscale - Google Code
march 2009 by soypunk
"AppScale is an open-source implementation of the Google AppEngine (GAE) cloud computing interface. AppScale enables execution of GAE applications on virtualized cluster systems. In particular, AppScale enables users to execute GAE applications using their own clusters with greater scalability and reliability than the GAE SDK provides. Moreover, AppScale executes automatically and transparently over cloud infrastructures such as the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Eucalyptus, the open-source implementation of the AWS interfaces."

YouTube - Practical Applications of Natural Language Processing in Assistive Technology
november 2008 by soypunk
"Ken Ingham, Ph.D. will describe the architecture and motivation behind the development of Amazability, Inc.'s Adept1 product. The Adept1 performs natural language analysis and interprets spoken words and phrases or typed input. The Adept1 is equipped with voice recognition and text-to-speech output that dynamically adapts multilingual spoken output to context. The Adept1 offers such applications as word processing, email, address book, web browsing, and access to an online library of thousands of books. The product represents a foundation for implementing practical natural language transaction processing where simple English phrases and sentences are interpreted to command a sequence of complex operations. The Adept1 will be demonstrated and a roadmap for future applications will be given."

september 2008 by soypunk
Speaker: Ian Hickson - As the HTML5 effort reaches its first big milestone -- feature completeness -- browsers are starting to implement it. It will be years before you can rely on HTML5 support when writing Web pages and applications, but you can start to experiment today to get a feel of what the new standard offers. This talk will explore some of the most recent implementations of HTML5 features.

Straight out of Compton
september 2008 by soypunk
John Siracusa on Google Chrome. One key take away might be that most of the UI cruft found in web browsers was never wanted by users in the first place. It is also fair that most web browsers today are heavily colored by the UI history of Mosaic/Navigator, as such it is harder for them to "wipe the slate clean" as Google has.
