Python 3000 = Python 3.0 = Py3K
november 2010 by siznax
Google TechTalks July 21, 2006 Guido van Rossum is a computer programmer who is best known as the author and Benevolent Dictator for Life of the Python programming language. ABSTRACT The next major version of Python, nicknamed Python 3000 (or more prosaically Python 3.0), has been anticipated for a long time. For years I have been collecting and exploring ideas that were too radical for Python 2.x, and it's time to stop dreaming and start coding. In this talk I will present the community process that will be used to complete the specification for Python 3000, as well as some of the major changes to the language and the remaining challenges.

Look Up! The Billion-Bug Highway You Can't See
september 2010 by siznax
Look up at the sky and what do you see? Well, blue, yes. And maybe a plane or a bird, but otherwise ... nothing. Or so you think. It turns out that right above you, totally invisible, is an enormous herd of animal life -- tiny bugs riding the wind currents.

The Currents Of Our Time - Carl Malamud Sep7 2010
september 2010 by siznax
In matters of style, swim with the current; In matters of principle, stand like a rock.
I'd like to talk with you today about the operation of our federal government, about how if our government is to do the jobs with which we have entrusted it—if government is to ensure that the air we breathe and the water we drink are safe, or that every child is to be given a chance to flourish—if we are to accomplish these goals, the machinery of our government must be made to work properly. ¶ At the Constitutional Convention, Ben Franklin stated his belief that public servants should not be paid a salary, for in paying the civil service, our government would not be made of “the wise and the moderate … the men fittest for the trust” but instead by “the bold and the violent, the men of strong passions … in their selfish pursuits.”

HG2TG (2005) Zaphod on TV
august 2010 by siznax
Sometimes Star Trek forgets about how much it loves real books and has nothing to do with them. When that happens, the future of publishing is the “holo-novel.” Other than Data playing as Sherlock Holmes, or Picard as the fictional-fictional hard boiled Dixon Hill, these can hardly be called novels; they’re basically interactive TV shows. It’s as if the word “novel” has lost its meaning for these people, in the same way we say “dial” or ‘hang-up” though we do literally neither anymore. ¶ Speaking to the American Booksellers Association in 1989, Isaac Asimov asked his audience to imagine a device that "Can go anywhere, and is totally portable. Something that can be started and stopped at will along its data stream, allowing the user to access the information in an effective, easy manner.” And if you’re thinking about record tapes, or holo-novels, or wires directly to the brain, then think again. Asimov reminded the audience that this ideal data storage device already exists.

Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse book trailer
august 2010 by siznax
Famine, Death, War, and Pestilence: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the harbingers of Armageddon — these are our guides through the Wastelands... ¶ From the Book of Revelation to The Road Warrior; from A Canticle for Leibowitz to The Road, storytellers have long imagined the end of the world, weaving eschatological tales of catastrophe, chaos, and calamity. In doing so, these visionary authors have addressed one of the most challenging and enduring themes of imaginative fiction: the nature of life in the aftermath of total societal collapse. ¶ Gathering together the best post-apocalyptic literature of the last two decades from many of today's most renowned authors of speculative fiction — including George R.R. Martin, Gene Wolfe, Orson Scott Card, Carol Emshwiller, Jonathan Lethem, Octavia E. Butler, and Stephen King — Wastelands explores the scientific, psychological, and philosophical questions of what it means to remain human in the wake of Armageddon.

EPIC 2014
august 2010 by siznax
Many years ago, futurists Robin Sloan and Matt Thompson made a video called EPIC 2014 about how media culture would be destroyed after Google and Amazon joined forces and became Googlezon. Today we face a similar threat, from a slightly different pairing – but the mashup name of the two companies remains the same.

"We" (2006 film) featuring Arundhati Roy
august 2010 by siznax
{a film based on the novel "The God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy} We is a fast-paced 64 minute documentary that covers the world politics of power, war, corporations, deception and exploitation. ¶ It visualizes the words of Arundhati Roy, specifically her famous Come September speech, where she spoke on such things as the war on terror, corporate globalization, justice and the growing civil unrest. ¶ It's witty, moving, alarming and quite a lesson in modern history. ¶ We is almost in the style of a continuous music video. The music used sets the pace and serves as wonderful background for the words of Ms. Roy and images of humanity in the world we live all in today. ¶ We is a completely free documentary, created and released anonymously on the internet.
