Analysis: Storms damage budgets in Central America, Mexico | Reuters
"Climate change models show the situation will only get worse as temperatures rise, taking a real toll on budgets across Latin America. Development banks and ratings agencies alike have urged the region to brace itself for severe weather and the resulting heavy repair costs."

"So the bias is definitively not that incompetent people think they’re better than competent people. Rather, it’s that incompetent people think they’re much better than they actually are."

Losing the bus that allowed me to go carless « Living in the O
"Any of the cuts will have a huge effect on the system and I know that I’ll personally be affected by these cuts. All of the services being considered for cuts are hugely important. But what is personally troubling me so much is that I might lose the bus service that allowed me to get rid of my car."

“SuperFreakonomics” and climate change : The New Yorker
'To be skeptical of climate models and credulous about things like carbon-eating trees and cloudmaking machinery and hoses that shoot sulfur into the sky is to replace a faith in science with a belief in science fiction. This is the turn that “SuperFreakonomics” takes, even as its authors repeatedly extoll their hard-headedness. All of which goes to show that, while some forms of horseshit are no longer a problem, others will always be with us.'

Streetsblog San Francisco » The Land of the Free (Parking)
"Every small business owner who addressed the MTA Board about its parking meter study asserted that extending parking meter hours beyond 6 pm would drive their customers to distraction, compelling them to seek the lush asphalt pastures of suburban malls, where they never have to worry about a parking ticket again. Never mind that three quarters of your customers, on average, come to your stores by foot, by Muni, or by bike. Never mind that parking meters were first installed in San Francisco in 1947 to promote turnover to help your business, nor that meter hours basically haven't been changed since then."
