Trados 2011 manual for freelancers written by Swedish translator Mats Linder: 45 USD
Jost Zetzsche, The 207th Tool Box Newsletter:

Comprehensive Trados 2011 manual for freelancers written by Swedish translator Mats Linder. Its 280-some pages cover virtually all aspects relevant to the freelance translator. Yes, a spellcheck would have been helpful and/or a native English proofreader wouldn't have hurt either, but it's one of those books that demonstrates the hard-earned knowledge of the author and his determination to communicate it.
Mats does not confine his manual to the main Trados application, but he points his readers to a good number of plug-ins from SDL's OpenExchange program as well as other third-party products that can be useful in combination with Trados. He's also not shy about highlighting some of the shortcomings of Trados, such as the processing of PDF files, but overall he is very positive and encouraging and manages to communicate both to a novice as well as a more advanced user.

How indie labels changed the world | Music | The Guardian
The improvisatory space in which the indies thrived has shrunk for several reasons. One is the ever-prevalent and finely tuned ability for corporate culture to absorb fringe behaviour and repackage it and market it as cutting edge. Another is the formalising of Britain's creative industries, a process that has seen the development of college degrees in music business, music journalism and, indeed, being in a band, lead to industry standardisation. The independent sector's greatest attributes – its ability to ad-lib, to trust its instincts and to hang the consequences are both impracticable and unteachable in such rigid frameworks. The sort of behaviour that allowed Wilson, McGee, Watts-Russell and their contemporaries to conceive some of their more extreme and fanciful ideas would also be something of a stretch for a human resources department to manage.

Studio 2011 Series: how to translate Word files in Studio and deliver unclean bilingual files
If you have been provided with a Word document and a 2007 Translation Memory and have been asked to provide an unclean bilingual file by your customer:

1) Create the bilingual document, pretranslated against the 2007 Translation Memory. To do this you open the memory in SDL Trados Translators Workbench and use the Translate feature under Tools. a) You must have "Segment unknown sentences" checked to ensure the file is fully segmented even where no match is found from the 2007 TM; b) You must uncheck the "TRADOStag XML workflow for Word .doc files" to avoid getting a *.TTX file instead;

2) Now you can add your doc file by clicking "Add" and then "Translate". The result will be a fully segmented doc file that you can now open in Studio 2011 for translation.

3) Translate in Studio, save bilingual as Target and, if relevant, update the TM using Workbench.

Studio 2011 Series : Translate to Fuzzy - SDL Blog
Confirm and Translate until Next Fuzzy Match
This command will do the following:
Move into all segments, no matter its status. (The exception being locked TUs - manually or through PerfectMatch). So no skipping of already confirmed segments as now.
Do a TM lookup in each segment:
If it's a 100% match, continue to the next segment.
If it's a new, non-100% match, stop.
If there is a changed target, stop.
When editing is finished, the user calls "Translate to Fuzzy" again and these steps get repeated until the end of the document is reached or Esc is pressed.

London Trails
About
My name is Ken Titmuss and my walks use old maps to help you find lost London. Each walk is round a specific, often over-looked London neighbourhood. If you are looking for a theme, it is history in unlikely places.

My walks celebrate everyday London and the many unsung local heroes who have contributed to the richness of this great metropolis. Most people who join these walks are either live here or who visit regularly and have ticked the usual tourist boxes. Be that as it may everyone is welocme.

I started London Trails after a 30 year career providing advice, support and encouragement to community groups across London. I thought it was time I shared my passion for London.

I am immensely proud to be in The Guardian’s Top 10 London Guided Walks

Why Social Search Is Rotting Our Brain :: Small Business Marketing Blog from Duct Tape Marketing
Today, with the reliance and dependability of search, we pretty much get exactly what Google thinks we are looking for – and I think that’s a problem.

The ramping of this idea of “social search” or giving us results based on where we’ve been before, where we are now, who we know and what our friends have +1’d is leading us further down the path where no real learning or discovery is even possible. (And this is not just if you click the social search icon, you can’t turn some elements of this off anymore.)

You’re no longer in charge of what you discover unless you take charge.

To me the new master skill is undiscovery of what you already know and this is quickly turning into something you’ll have to intentionally practice as we live our lives more and more fully online.

Paris Review - The Art of Fiction No. 211, William Gibson
It’s harder to imagine the past that went away than it is to imagine the future. What we were prior to our latest batch of technology is, in a way, unknowable. / In my lifetime I’ve been able to watch completely different narratives of history emerge. The history now of what World War II was about and how it actually took place is radically different from the history I was taught in elementary school. If you read the Victorians writing about themselves, they’re describing something that never existed. The Victorians didn’t think of themselves as sexually repressed, and they didn’t think of themselves as racist. They didn’t think of themselves as colonialists. They thought of themselves as the crown of creation.
Of course, we might be Victorians, too.
